Yes, Bolton "only" coached Hawthorn to 5 wins from 5 games
I'm not so convinced. He took over the defending/future premiership team and had these results:

R11 def. GWS by 7 points
R12 def. West Coast by 44 points
R13 def. Carlton by 28 points
R14 def. Collingwood by 29 points

None of those teams made the finals...

I'm really biased against taking assistants from great teams. You just never know how much of a role they played in that. Could be nothing, could be a lot. It's all behind the scenes. All you see is the wins.

Is it fair to say something will be announced today given Ashcroft will be on trade radio tomorrow? There wouldn't be much point in getting him on if a decision hadn't been made. There is Malceski and Gorringe but I can't imagine that would be much more than three questions.
No Matchu, Ashcroft's on trade radio today

I only count 4...?

Well we could do a search of the losing clubs. Hell, we came last and port picked our winner up...

And? The team sitting second on the ladder beats the team in 8th spot. Not a huge surprise.
someone said earlier he never beat a top 8 side in the 5 he won...

Not what I said. I said none of the teams he beat played finals this year which is a true statement.
yeah you said made the finals. memory is a funny thing..

Sure is. I just think people are blowing the five wins out of proportion a bit. Give him a list not as talented as Hawthorn and we'll find out just how good he is. Maybe he is as good as you say but there is a decent chance he's not.

Just a reminder..

He is obviously well respected by the strongest coaching staff of any club in the comp. He was chosen and did a perfect job for the Hawks when he was asked to step up in favour of other coaches the Hawks had available to them when Clarko went down. (was Ratten one of them?) That speaks volumes of their belief in him. They brought him from 'obscurity' in lower grades because they saw something in him. So much so he was given the gig over more experienced, winning AFL coaches instead. He came through with an 100% record. No other coach has ever achieved that. 5 wins in their 1st 5 outings. The Hawks made the correct choice as their second coach instead of Clarko...Brendon Bolton.

Mental conditioning is Boltons talent. That's the reason the Hawks put Bolton in the hot seat while the Hawks waited, not knowing how long Clarko would be out. They knew if anyone could keep the team mentally focussed it would be Bolton. They were right, he did, They won every game, he won his slice of history, he stood beside Clark and held the trophy on GF day. What more endorsement do some people need? The Hawks don't. They know his talents.

Let me preface this by saying I'm absolutely in and willing to support Bomber Thompson as coach (if it happens). But am I the only one who sees a considerable risk in a certain amount of shit sticking if/when the Essendon saga blows up once and for all? Surely Bomber gets implicated if it turns poorly for the players?

Wasnt hurd the fall guy? I really don't know what the Dons are going to do if Bomber leaves and Hurd does the professional thing and resigns. Troulble brewing as you suggest, but I cant see how any shit will stick to the suns.

The problem is the unknown factor. 5 games in the middle of a season doesn't make you a great coach. I just feel there isn't enough evidence to suggest he would be a good coach for another team and that's why I'm unsure as to whether it's worth the risk for the Suns.

I doubt the AFL would let him coach you guys if that was the case.

The AFL have made Hird the fall guy. Bomber will be okay. I don't consider this a problem at all.
