Who knows, I could be reading things into it that aren't there but either the rumours about Draper to Brisbane or staying are far off and we are getting Draper (which from a logic point of view seems more likely) because if we aren't getting him, you'd think we would have locked up Rob by now. If the difference in the offer is he wants another year, surely we'd just go the trigger clause (stop tapping to the opposition mids, stay out of the F50, that sort of thing) to get the extra year and signature.

2 years plus triggers is surely the max for a 30 year old.

Port had better start stocking up on 1st round picks because they look to have some absolute top draftees inthe next couple of years via F/S's and NGA's Louis Salopek, Tevita Rodan (F/S) and Zemes Pilot and Dougie Cochrane now seems a done deal as well. All look to be 1st rounders at this stage.
But they won’t have to pay first rounders for them. Bundle second rounders for points etc.

I doubt that very much, they're are going to need a shitload of points and if Wanganeen-Milera nominates them they'll be delving into future picks big time.

This is the current 2025 draft picks situation

How many of those picks are going to fly with St. Kilda, in reality unless they trade out a good player or hit their future picks they ain't got too many feathers to fly with in a NWM situation unless the delve heavily into future picks.

Port have been very good at getting deals done with bare minimum, but this one looks a stretch too far. Without trading out a top player they have literally nothing to satisfy StKilda with.
They will get it done somehow.

Trade their 2026 first for a 2025 1st with one of the clubs with multiple 2025 1sts. First round this year is meant to be heavily compromised so I'm sure they could find someone to pull the trigger.

Add their current 2nd round pick this year plus a player like Sinn and that just about gets them there.

Final trade - 2025 first rounder, 2025 2nd rounder and Sinn (throw in some later pick swaps to make it confusing for everyone who came out in front)

Yup, something like that will probably happen. And, boy, is that a horrible scenario for the Saints. There has to be better mechanisms in place to protect clubs like Saints in this kind of scenario. Meanwhile Essendon will get a high first rounder for Draper as compensation. Such a broken system.

Are you suggesting they trade their '26 first out and get a '25 first back and that '25 first goes to Saints?

That won't work. That still leaves them with no first in '25 or '26. They need to use one at the draft in either year.

If they get and use (at the draft) a first this year then they can trade their '26. If they dont use a first this year they can't trade their '26 first.

They can trade us JHF for our next two firsts

Think About It GIF by Identity
Now there's a trade I'd do.

Not sure how I'd go trying to like the guy though

Gold Coast have 8, 14 and 18.

Port trade their future 2nd to GWS for pick 30

Port trade their future 1st, 30 and current second (26) for 8, 18 and Gold Coast's future 2nd.

They keep 18 to satisfy the rules. Trade 8 to St Kilda and a 2027 pick.

That's an example of how they could manoeuver.

So something with ballpark picks like:

GC lose 8, 18 and Future 25 for Future 8, Future 30 and 26

Why would GC do anything like that? We're going to downgrade our picks, and they're next year now!

That's an example that would work as far as satisfying the 2 in 4 year rule.

Let me guess this was actually agreed when the Power gave a future 1st for Lukosius?

Gold Coast have multiple academy players so will want to do the usual trade down.

They'd lose 8, 18 and probably more like a future 34, for future 8ish, 30 and 26 this year.

30+26 is +200 points on pick 18. And they'd be gambling Port's future pick is better than 8 and having that absorbed by a bid

I'm just suggesting a framework for it too, there could be lots of other moves to even it out. For example they could trade someone less important for a 2nd round pick and add that to the deal.

Another option is maybe Essendon take Port's 26 and future 2nd for 22 and 23 with some even ups. Port pass both of those to Gold Coast for 18 which is +500 points

NWM doesn't seem like the type to shaft his club if Port Power can't offer an appropriate trade. He will be happy to stay if a trade can't be reached, similar to what happened with Rankine.
