This thread is running a bit behind this season.

Most years we are well out of the finals race by now so potential draft picks, trades and off-field additions are all we have. The Henley Beach Cafe thread is usually pumping by now.

Most of our attention will be devoted to our push for finals action, but there will be an upswing in whispers as more teams are mathematically eliminated from the finals equation.

Bit much to call Jack Martin a star

Think it might be a troll account.

Makes sense after how he labelled Bowes and Martin ;)

Would like to see much more accurate labelling in the media. For example:

"Adelaide stars Jordan Dawson and Izak Rankine, along with role player Lachlan Murphy, were seen enjoying a panini at the Henley Beach Cafe"

I think that’s the nicest thing you have said about Smurph in more than 5 years.

‘Fringe role player’ would be better.

Who are we currently being linked to? Draper and maybe NWM — anyone else on the radar?

It feels a lot like 2017 again: just one or two elite players away from being a genuine premiership contender.

This could be one of the most pivotal off-seasons in the club's history.
C4 mentioned a while back that Bailey was possibly gettable from the lions. I'd be into us going big to get him. He could free up Rachele to play more in the midfield along with Rankine.

We have to plan around building a midfield that doesn't include Rachele and Rankine. I love these two as small forwards but I don't think either have shown enough to guarantee that they can be regulars in our midfield rotations. In this years trade and draft, midfield is still the priority.

That seems to be the plan at the moment, where Rankine stays as a 4th-5th midfield rotation and Rachele as a small forward.

Hard to see why we'd really push for this addition to the midfield at the moment, over either Curtin or Draper, especially as having more rotations offers little. Versatility is only there as a substitute for a lack of elite talent, not the blueprint for using elite talent.

Agree. With Curtin locking down a wing and with an eye to going through the middle as time passes, we have the following that are our primary mids we need to be rotating through:
Dawson
Soligo
Peatling
Draper
Rankine
Berry.

Personally if we were to obtain a quality forward like Bailey that allowed Rachele to also have stints in the middle, it makes us even more flexible as we have a real mix of size, power, pace and skill across the group.

But even more important than obtaining a quality small forward to enable more Rachele and Rankine in the middle is a better midfield line coach that can fix our structures so we are not losing clearance at the centre week in week out. Get that right and we are the ones winning ball with our group giving first look to our forwards, look out everyone

We have a positive average centre clearance differential (0.5 per game, ranked 7th in the comp).

How many of those are where we get first hand on it and are under all sorts of pressure and dump kick / are immediately tackled, the ball never clears the centre and the oppo are away - we are rarely clean there especially against the better sides. Beating up on the poor sides can mask stats.

Not sure. But we're also 7th in the comp for average difference in scores from centre bounces. (For comparison, we're 1st in the comp from defence and 5th from forward)

Again, it would be interesting to dig into the stats to see what sort of dominance in this area we exerted over the sides we thrashed (typically the weaker sides) as opposed to the sides in and around us. I know the dogs won the clearances last weekend as Beveridge was making that point in the presser. Pretty sure Collingwood did us in as well in the clearances from memory.

There are four sides that excel at that (GC, Haw, WB, Geel). We're in the next category down.

Do we actually want more Rankine in the middle? I think the last few weeks in particular have shown he is far more damaging when playing more up forward. It's far easier to replace 25-30 touches from him as a mid than it is for 15-20 touches and 2-3 goals as a forward. Agree on better mid coaching/structures though.

It might sort itself out naturally next year if young Draper has a great preseason and can slot in from R1 and become that burst mid we have craved (although Peatling has been very good in there in that regard too). So maybe a mix of Dawson, Draper and Peatling with Berry, Rankine and Soligo swapping in with these players and maybe then Rankine and Rachele can be primarily forward. But I am one that sees Rankine really coming into his own when he is primarily a mid as he has skills almost no one else in the comp does and 25-30 touches of that there may █████ 15 in the forward line of his.

There was a stat which ranked 1st touches vs score.. lemme find it...

These are the most basic stoppage stats from that game.

No idea about all the other ones which tell more of the story, scores for/against from stoppages etc.
