The speed of our team will be difficult for about any club in the AFL. Ryan Houilhan has to be credited. He was a a great player for us but he unselfish gave up playing another year when he could have played again. He most likely knew for us to win a flag especially as a midfielder/ forward you need leg speed. He like others knew it was time to give it up, some refuse to. We have speed now with the best 22, so we should exploit other club weakness and keep playing players with speed and not going back in our shell and playing guys that can not run and get the ball quick to our talls and smalls. We do not have the elite midfield like Sam Mitchell that are not quick but have amazing skills

Houlihans elite kicking skills would see him able to play in our current side, if he was just starting out now. He had some injury issues late in his career which seemed to take their toll on his speed, but he would more than make up for that with his ball movement and use.

The crash and bash style of attacking the ball at all costs would be more likely to keep him out of the team. Not every player in our 22 is speedy, but they all go in hard at every opportunity, that is the difference that would prevent him getting a game this season, he just did not have the body/will to play that way.

Houlihan was not the only one who knew his time was up I feel, good for him he still has a job in football. Our game is all about our pressure and our ability to set up offensively and defensively quickly and pace and endurance are a massive requirement to play for Carlton. This is why Mclean will be lucky to get a game, regardless on how well he can clear the ball his contributions in chasing, pressuring, spreading and getting into position for both defence and attack are not up to scratch. Guys like yarran, Simpson, Garlett, Betts, Touhy, Judd, Murphy, Hampson, Kreuzer, Lucas, Armfield, Touhy, Curnow, Walker, Carrazzo and Scotland who can run hard all day are the types we are after. Russell is a player who is struggling to run to the level we require at the moment. I get the feeling Joseph won't be far away but nor will Duigan and Jamison who can really motor.

One thing we saw against the Lions is that their time in possession would have been very low, players were allowed very little time to hang onto the ball and that is our key and the benefit of having fit quick players all over the field.

Speed and endurance.

Its all about pacing the game, running teams ragged in the first half and keeping the scores level and maintaining the appearanace of a close game as we keep our stocks in reserve - and then KAFARCKING BOOM......can't wait to play the pies, can not wait.

Houlihan was always going. He was given the opportunity to retire with dignity.
I think he could have continue if he had a good pre season in 2011. He was a great player for a long time. I was glad we gave him that 200 game he deserved. I wish we gave Brad Fisher that 1 more game to 100 on the bench. The injuries took over Ryan body and when he come back the game was played at full speed. He would have possibly pulled another injury at his age and how the game was played.

I wanted him in the side always no matter, so he could continue his dream of a Grand Final but It may have been the detrimental to the club going forward. I thank Ratts and the selection committee they gave him some games as a sub as he was still contributing. It was also better then throwing some young guy who really would not show much in 20 minutes. The team was a little behind the best team and was not a flag chance yet, so we could afford giving players a go with the injury list. This year is different, I believe we are a flag chance. I reckon to get a game now you need speed and ok skills, tall option if needed or super tagger if not in the 22.

Yesterday game prove we got the tools to win the flag with speed as a weapon. We need to only keep it up and stay above West Coast Eagles. The task would be a lot harder playing them in a Prelimanry down in Subiaco. I think if we can keep it up we could book a Grand Final with more likely Hawthorn with Geelong and West Coast the outsiders followed by Colllingwood and Sydney.

It's round three...

We all know that but like previous years you see signs just like back in 2002 when I seen signs and said we are going to possibly win our first spoon. People kept saying we will come good every week but it took ages for them to be convinced we inherited spuds. The term spuds become footy folklore 10 years ago. We had a list of draftee and trades from 1997-1999 that were average and below average type players. The disappointing bunch of early 2000 draft. They were most injured or had no direction plus a wasted 2001 draft with trading positions on draft order.
