Just in response to passengers in the Australian side over the past couple of years, here's the averages over the past couple of years.

Since (and including) the 1st Test v India 2000/01
Hayden: 19 tests, 33 inns, 1975 runs at 68.10 - 8 100's, 7 50's.
Since (and including) the 5th Test v England 2001
Langer: 12 tests, 20 inns, 1073 runs at 63.11 - 5 100's, 4 50's.
Since (and including) the 4th Test v England 2001
Ponting: 13 tests, 21 inns, 1145 runs at 67.35 - 4 100's, 4 50's.
Since (and including) the 1st Test v New Zealand 2001/02
M Waugh: 11 tests, 16 inns, 495 runs at 30.93 - 0 100's, 4 50's.
Since (and including) the 1st Test v New Zealand 2001/02
S Waugh: 11 tests, 16 inns, 345 runs at 21.56 - 0 100's, 2 50's.
Since (and including) the 1st Test v England 2001
Martyn: 16 tests, 23 inns, 1042 runs at 54.84 - 5 100's, 5 50's.
Since (and including) the 1st Test v England 2001
Gilchrist: 16 tests, 22 inns, 1254 runs at 73.76 - 4 100's, 5 50's.

But, also interesting to note, in the last five tests (since the start of the South African tour) Martyn has averaged just 33.37 and Langer just 35.75 so those two will want to pick their form back up or the media will get themselves on their backs very quickly.

Now to the bowlers.

Since (and including) the 1st Test v India 2000/2001
McGrath: 19 tests, 87 wkts at 20.68 - 5 5wkt inns, 0 10wkt mtchs.
Since (and including) the 1st Test v England 2001
Warne: 16 tests, 93 wkts at 22.97 - 6 5wkt inns, 2 10wkt mtchs.
Since (and including) the 4th Test v England 2001
Gillespie: 10 tests, 26 wkts at 42.46 - 0 5wkt inns, 0 10wkt mtches.
Since (and including) the 4th Test v England 2001
Lee: 13 tests. 41 wkts at 35.75 - 1 5wkt inns, 1 10wkt mtch.

Gillespie?? WTF!!?? Never even had the slightest feeling that his form was that shocking.

But if you think about it, his average was down nearly into the teens around the Indian tour, and now it's back upto 26 and no one has even noticed it at all.

Thoughts??

Another thing on Gillespie, in the last 16 tests has got 56 wickets at 32.96.

And his series averages for the past 6 series (since India)

Australia in India - 3 tests, 13 wkts @ 30.30
Australia in England - 5 tests, 19 wkts @ 34.31
New Zealand in Australia - 3 tests, 11 wkts @ 28.72
South Africa in Australia - 1 test, 2 wkts @ 40.00
Australia in South Africa - 3 tests, 8 wkts @ 35.87
Australia in Pakistan - 1 test, 3 wkts @ 39.00

Coincidentally, I have made the same observation on the 'Dizzy to wipe England' thread earlier tonight.

Without completely repeating myself, I think what has held Dizzy back is that he has rarely, especially recently, turned great spells of Test bowling into great Test match performances - something which McGrath and Warne have done innumerable times.

He's become overrated because people like Steve Waugh build up his reputation endlessly like saying "he bowled one of the great spells" or that oft-told one "he's one of the unluckiest bowlers around".

Both Lee and Gillespie have gone backwards at Test level since the start of 2001, this is one of the reasons why Australia's level of performances in that time hasn't reached the level of their 16-match winning streak (but it's still an exceptional standard).

They have been covered by McGrath and the resurgance of Warne, as well as the inclusion of Martyn in the side, and the strength of the Langer/Hayden opening partnership. It's easy to forget that the opening partnership in the 1998-2001 period was considered one of Australia's very few weaknesses.
