Mundy can roll into the McPhee position that we lacked 2013, I was a critic of him but he did give us size when across half when rotated there.
Don't forget Mundy started st half back and was more than serviceable. He is an elite kick (most of the time), tall and big bodied - and creates space with his movement and smarts- good overhead as well. He could break the lines across half back by kicking long to an open forward line as he that penetrating with his disposal. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
Blakey to get a decent run in the guts and get a chop out from Weller and or Langdon to inject some pace.
Yeew......
A lot of people seem to like Mundy going to half back. But doesn't it just perpetuate the problem by having another old guy taking away experience from our up-and-comers? Mundy didn't have a great game against Port but neither did Fyfe or Neale relative to their high standards (they were still in the best player list) - I still think he is important as part of our midfield rotation for the moment. Which is why I quite liked seeing him at half forward on the weekend. We are short of forwards so it isn't like he is keeping out a youngster and he can rotate through there along with Fyfe, Balic, Bennell and others. I'd rather keep Spurr as the leader in defence for this season, and try out a bunch of configurations around him. Eventually I think Ryan is the most likely to play Spurr's role but you could play both in the same team fine.

I like Spurr and have only Spurr, Mundy, and Sandy as my over 27s to play in our first 22 wishlist. I see the calls on other threads to replace him with grey by some but from what I've seen Grey is: (i) a rookie listed player, (ii) also can be a suspect kick, and for the moment, I would take Spurr anyday over Grey in the back line as a lock down defender on small forwards. Grey was a late pick in the draft from Tassie that was re-rookied after not showing enough. Spurr was the most valuable player in the SANFL and nearly won the SANFL GF off his own boot before he was picked up by Freo as a mature age and has hardly missed a game since coming off most games with blood or a black eye and no complaints. I think Ryan is the more exciting prospect for similar reasons to Spurr when he fully gets over his injury.
But the thing is Lee Spurr is what, 28 or 29? He was never an amazing player. Realistically he'll be out of the game in two seasons. You have to be proactive. He might get the job done now but who will in a year? Of course a kid with three games is going to be inferior to a guy who has played over 100. The team is going to get its arse kicked regardless and even if the game was in the balance, the guy in the back pocket won't be the difference (really). This thought of the young guy being inferior... so what? Pav was producing more than Taberner and McCarthy but you cannot keep playing him.

Is not wrong , but spurr is contract until 2018 , so is D.pearce , I don't think freo had enough money to paid them out .
This is just another classic example of the pelicans managing the list.

Up there with signing Nick Suban to a five year contract or something absolutely insane a few seasons back. That was weird even at the time. Was there some super offer he got from Victoria and we needed to lock him in or something? Ludicrous...

No.

What I'm proposing is: Johnson out, Ibbotson out, Dawson out. Quite possibly Spurr out as well.

So that's three, possibly four guys essentially retired.

Coming in would all be young blokes. That's Sam Collins now, Luke Ryan and Alex Pearce when they're up and going, and whoever else is suitable in there and who we need to check out.

Mundy goes in as experience and a good medium sized body. He's essentially the beacon of experience down there. Four old blokes go out, three young guys come in, and Mundy comes in. It's one veteran and not four down there.

Pay them out, it must be so, it should be written!
..... em off
I still not sure why freo signed them for two years , Bartel got the option of choosing retirement or spending more time in VFL . He choose retirement. Bartel as a player still got the skill but he lost the speed , same as d.pearce and spurr.

That is a bit extreme. I rather slowly phase them out. Johnson is cooked. Get rid of one of Ibbo/Spurr not both. Take spurr out. Replace Johnson with Collins or cox this week. Replace Spurr with a young kid, any young kid with pace.

What I've been saying is we should have phased these guys out ages ago. Now we're in the situation where we either start the phase out now and delay giving young kids games for even longer, or else we axe the 30+ brigade all at once. It was so dumb and it was obvious at the time it was a shaky shaky way of playing it.

I have said this many times before last year. When McPharlin retired in 2015. I wanted Alex Pearce and Sam Collins to get 10 games each as the 3rd tall while Dawson ands Johnson was still in the team. I eventually got my wish in the end. Alex Pearce played around 10 games in the 1st half of the season. Collins played 12 games in his debut game as year. You know as well as I do that by the end of this season or by the latest, by round 1 of 2018, Our 3 talls at the back will be Alex Pearce, Sam Colins and Joel Hamling.

As for Spurr, He has to be dropped. that kick in the 1st quarter vs Port which was intercepted by wingard, which he got a goal shortly after was inexcusable. Again, I am not Keen on throwing kids for the sake of it. They need to be protected while they are developed.

Example: Happy to play 2 ruckmen provided that Sandilands or Griffin is the experienced ruck and either Darcy or Strnadica is the other young ruck.

Another example: Happy for Johnson to be dropped and for Dawson and Hamling to keep their spot for the time being. Provided that Logue or cox or Collins get games as the 3rd tall defender. Once Alex Pearce is fit, get dawson out of there.

Again Happy for spurr to be dropped, as long as we replace him with a kid that can kick. Balic, Grey, Ryan or any kid on the rookie list.

Lyon and his crew made the call very early in 2015 that Sheridan was the way to go instead of Duffield(who was our most accomplished kick out of D50). So RTB you now need to use the same logic onSuban, Ibbo, Johnno, Pearce, Griff, Spurr, Dawson & its a shame because Sutcliffe is only 22/23yrs old but his card is stamped as a serial turnover artist

Sutty just needs time to reset. He has regressed badly over the last 2 years. I honestly think a solid stint at Peel would do him the world of good.

Take the pressure of him. Tell him to focus on fast attacking rebound football at Peel. Start playing instinctively again.

He's still young and once showed quite a bit of promise. I wouldn't be looking to delist him but something has to change.

What about Tucker? Has backline experience and is better kick than at least 2 of those blokes?
Again, I don't mind Playing him there, but things nees to be done in Moderation. Silent Alarm wants to have 6 young guys in our back 6. I said If spurr gets dropped, I don't mind another young guy coming in. If you read my post above. I want an experienced guy with a youth player.

Example If we are playing 2 rucks, One has to be Eiher sandi/Griffin the other is a young guy like Darcy/Strnadica.

If Spurr gets dropped,

This is the back 6 I want vs the dogs...
FB Hamling, Dawson, Ibbo
HB: Tucker, Collins/Cox/Logue, Sutcliffe.

I don't mind playing 2-3 guys in the back 6. I could throw Luke Ryan in there rotating off the bench too. Dawson wont be dropped unless injured or Suspended. Again, if Alex Pearce is Available, Dawson goes out.

His natural enthusiasm and freedom has been coached out of him. He used to run out of the backline and take the game on. Now I don't know what he does. Weller may be going the same way.

He was one of very few that were quite good in Rd 1. Shocking last week though, but not alone.

Yeah the whole Weller at half back experiment is going absolutely nowhere. Don't get it, never have.

Should be playing Ballantyne's role in the side. Bring in Crozier to half back.

Exactly - Spurr offers little as his kicking is not long as he thinks he can kick.
Constantly falls short of our target and puts the pressure on everyone trying to mop up - get Mundy back to be half back general where he can kick through the lines and get into centre forward quickly and accurately - maybe old, older than Spurr but has a way better leg and breaks the lines with run and carry.
Weller is just a little undersized for this role and I feel it shows.

Mundy doesn't have the marking ability of Spurr. If we take out Spurr, Ibbo and Johnson we've essentially taken out all intercept marking ability left in the backline (granted MJ hasn't been a good intercept marker this year). Spurr is also in the leadership group and has been one of the few players in the last two games that hasn't been disappointing or under performing IMO. He won't be dropped.

Weller has been pretty damn good, his disposal in round 1 was poor but he improved significantly in round 2. I thought he was one of the backman actually trying to break open Port's defense. Given he's only had about 5 games in the back line. I think he's been a revelation. We just need another 2 just like him. Hamling had something ridiculous like 12 spoils. These 2 are only defenders I am confident can be part of a successful backline in years to come.

Spurr is a great mark but agree his replacement needs to be thought about. He's best 22 for 2017 and 2018, maybe Ryan?

I'm done with Dawson and Johnson.

Ibbotson I'm losing faith, he just seems he'll always be the 5-6th best defender, with his experience he should be in the top 3.

Alex Pearce, Collins and Logue ??

Hamling Collins Ryan
Weller A.Pearce Logue

It's just a bit too tall and not skillful enough. We are missing probably 1-2 additional quality defenders.

Could maybe move one of the KPDs the bench and keep someone like Spurr or Sutcliffe in. Then once we get Jason Carter or JJ, move them out.

However it is still an improvement. Logue is fast and agile enough to play on a small or medium forward. Doesn't exactly need to be played as a KPD.

If you saw Croziers performances the past 2 weeks in the WAFL you would think that's where he belongs. Hughes is a better option for a flank than Crozier or they can go with Luke Ryan when he gets some match fitness via the WAFL. Logue will come in anyway but they need to consider at length where are they going to play him as at AFL level maybe on the bench to start with.
