How many of the players we drafted in 2006 & 2007 are good footballers ?

The last time I saw him Wilkes he was turning the match the Saints way until being stupidly subbed. He also pretty much was BOG in last years WAFL Grand Final. Every time I've seen him he's looked good.

Thought I'd go on topic for something different ...

Ross talked up Spurr quite a bit entering into the season and I wasn't quite so sure myself, but I can see where he's coming from now.

He's quite a good reader of the play, solid body and has good delivery by foot which is a must these days if you play as a back flanker. Still a bit 'inbween size' for my liking but he's doing a good job and Sube's is going to find it hard to get back into the team if Spurr keeps his form up. Good on him. :thumbsu:

As for suggesting he take on Cyril, well anybody else we try is going to get burnt at some point, if not all day, so I'd be happy to give him a go. Ibbo was a disaster last year (off memory), but he might be up for another go now he's playing a bit better himself and the defensive set up is working well as a whole. Other than that, I can't see anybody else having a remote chance on him ... broughton maybe, but he's playing a lot more up the ground with Fyfe out now. Get Spurr on him and see if he can keep him quiet(ish).

Shows the value in picking up quality mature agers from the state leagues. While I'm happy with the young guys we've drafted, we could've picked up Spurr, Horsley & Tom Lee, which would've given us a small defender, extra midfield rotation and a secondary fwd marking target. Would have filled holes that needed to be filled.
Fixed.

Haha...fair point and I agree, what I was originally intending to say was if they are quality at state league level, they are a fair chance of being serviceable in the afl.

Back to Lee Spurr, should be able to hold down a possie on half back, which will either free up someone like duff/ibbo or push them back to the wafl.....personally I think Duff has bulldogs written all over him..

Spurr is a good find, guys like him and Muzungu - just know how to play.

In that last attack by Port, Spurr just got his head over it and attacked the ball - sound football.

Wilkes is worse than Keplar and about even with Anthony. He is not a good footballer at all.

The question is on his pace, no doubt he can play.

Plus Latro - it's a forum ...learn o live itch opposing views.

Take a look at the 2006 and 2007 draft and who we picked. If I had more time I'd be more comprehensive in this post but for the time being I'll summarise:

We have delisted almost all of them. We have a gaping hole in our list for players with five years experience, the 23-25 year olds. We had to pick up these mature bodies because we fluffed the drafts.

We are still paying for it, it will be another five years in my opinion before that period is out of influencing our list and the potential players we can put out on the field. Of course there are some complexities with the list below, but just for a quick summary.

2006 Draft; Fremantle's first pick # 31 - Clayton Collard - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Kurt Tippet, Alwyn Davey, Todd Goldstein, Bachar Houli, Will Schofield

Fremantle's second pick # 52 - Brock O'Brien - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Lindsay Thomas, Robbie Gray, Josh Hill, Tyson Goldsack, Justin Westhoff

Fremantle's third pick # 77 - Calib Mourish - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Aaron Edwards, David Rodan, [now into rookie draft], Sam Jacobs, Clinton Jones, Sharrod Wellingham

Fremantle's fourth pick rookie # 13 - Chris Smith - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Matthew Suckling, Jake King, Jarrod Harbrow

Fremantle's fifth pick rookie # 28 - Andrew Foster - DELISTED

Fremantle's sixth pick rookie # 42 - Darren Rumble - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Tom Lonergan

Fremantle's seventh pick rookie # 53 - Benet Copping - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Jarryn Geary, Beau Wilkes

Quality year.

2007 Draft; Fremantle's first pick # 7 - Rhys Palmer - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Lachlan Henderson, Ben McEvoy, Patrick Dangerfield, Cyril Rioli, Jack Grimes, Harry Taylor, Callan Ward, Scott Selwood, Tayte Pears

Fremantle's second pick # 24 - Clayton Hinkley - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Andy Otten, Sam Reid

Fremantle's third pick # 40 - Chris Mayne

Fremantle's fourth pick # 55 - Mark Johnson - DELISTED

Fremantle's fifth pick # 69 - Keplar Bradley

Fremantle's sixth pick preseason draft # 6 - Joshua Head - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Tom Bellchambers, Aaron Joseph

Fremantle's seventh pick rookie # 6 - Brent Connelly - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Nathan Grima

Fremantle's eighth pick rookie # 22 - Luke Pratt - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Jared Petrenko, Jeremy Laidler, David Ellard

Fremantle's ninth pick rookie # 34 - Calib Mourish - DELISTED

Fremantle's tenth pick rookie # 50 - Ryley Dunn - DELISTED
Players of note between this selection and our next:
Brodie Martin, Callum Wilson, Shane Mumford, Beau Wilkes

The likes of Spurr, Barlow, Broughton, Silvani, Lower and Ballantyne were desperately needed to this hole, thankfully they seem capable. We are fortunate.

Fairly depressing read. Total drafting fail.:(

At least our fix-up rookie picks have undone some of the damage of those wasted years.

Look, I agree that it is impossible to disagree that we didn't draft well in that time period, 2006 being particular objectionable and frankly inexcusable...but you have skewed a few points to favour your argument which I don't think should be glossed over.

1. Take for example the drafting of Mark Johnson through to Ryley Dunn - a total of 84 players were taken...according to you only 11 players of note were taken out of that 84, or a hit rate League-wide of 13%. Now, that 11 includes Callum Wilson who never fired a real shot, and Keplar Bradley. So make it 10 players of note of which we secured 1. This means unlike several clubs, we actually secured a decent player. Absolutely we missed out on some guns, but so did the majority of clubs. Surely draft success has to be relative to the competition.

2. You can't call the 2006-07 drafts "fluffed" and then say that we are fortunate that the later mature-agers worked out. Falling into the attribution trap - blame skill when it suits your point of view, and luck when it doesn't.

3. Aside from a change in personnel and recruiting staff, which I think was sometime after 2007...surely you can credit Fremantle at least somewhat with the boom in mature age recruits.

The story gets better.

2008 Draft; Fremantle's first pick # 3 - Stephen Hill

Fremantle's second pick # 21 - Hayden Ballantyne

Fremantle's third pick # 24 - Nic Suban

Fremantle's fourth pick # 37 - Zac Clarke

Fremantle's fifth pick # 53 - Michael Walters

Fremantle's sixth pick # 56 - Ben Bucovaz - DELISTED

Fremantl'e seventh pick # 68 - Tim Ruffles - DELISTED

Fremantle's eigth pick # 77 - Chris Hall - DELISTED

Fremantle's ninth pick rookie # 3 - Casey Sibosado - DELISTED
Players available at that pick:
Jeff Garlett, Robin Nahas, Ricky Henderson, Zac Dawson

Fremantle's tenth pick rookie # 19 - Matt De Boer

Fremantle's eleventh pick rookie # 34 Hamish Shepheard - DELISTED
Current AFL Players available at that pick:
Daniel Stewart, Luke Breust

Fremantle's twelfth pick rookie # 48 - Clancee Pearce

Fremantle's thirteenth pick rookie # 62 - Jay Van Berlo

Fremantle's fourteenth pick rookie # 74 - Greg Broughton

The turning point year, with the fix up mature selections.

I hope our latest draft turns out well; Spurr and Neale are thumbs up so far.

I want to make it known that I only posted those lists as a means for dreamers to look back and wonder what could have been. The drafting of that period was geared towards pushing for a quick premiership, we paid for that in the years to follow but the goal was there, the team had just made a preliminary final, we looked on the up. If we had a flag out of it the decisions would be looked back on more fondly by me, but that didn't happen.

You can also bring up that we will trend towards less players delisted the closer we get to the present. Players like Walters and Jay Van Berlo might be delisted by the end of this year and that will make it look less successful.

It is only due to our lack of success, or fostering the talent we drafted if we are being a brutal, during that period that forced us to look for the players like Spurr, Silvani, Barlow and Broughton after everyone had already overlooked them.

I will stick my neck out and say that so far we have had a win there and it goes some ways towards making up for the previous lack of success.

All the best to Spurr!

Another good find from the rookie draft - did really well off the HB line today I thought for only his 2nd game.

Amazes me our ability to pick up solid, plug in players in the rookie draft.

Send your scouts over to the NEAFL State Games at Southport QLD on the 26th of May - Southport Footy Club there are a few more Lee Spurr's running around over here and you can get hold of them early without them having to go to the SANFL or VFL for a couple of years to get noticed -Under 21's played at 9.00am with the State opens at 11.30am, if my memory serves me correct the QLD side nearly knocked off the WAFL side a few years ago in a state v state encounter.

For all you Spurr knockers at our club - you have not seen the best of him by a long way - just as hard as he has worked for a Freo jumper he will not give it up lightly, it is the way he has played all of his life, he is a true 110%er. The bigger the job the harder he works.

Hopefully spurr's attitude is contagious.

Are there Spurr knockers ? I think he's looked fantastic.

really happy with Spurr. Was told he was good by my SA relatives and mates. Good to see they weren't embelishing. In Spurr we have an experienced player, used to finals atmosphere, with good skills, footy brain and a desperation to win games at all costs (re: his SANFL days). Good quality rebounding B flanker with an attitude that Freo can really benefit from going forward.

Like what I have seen of him thus far and believe that he can only get better with game time. I think we are being very patient with Barlow and Mundy as we all know what they are capable of once they both get their mojos back.

Spurr is first 22 for mine though.

reminds me a little of broughton, seems to have time when ball in hand, could be yet another solid mature age recruit to go with the likes of barlow, mzungu, broughton and snos

I have not heard a knock yet (which is saying something!) he has looked calm and composed in defence with good delivery and strong work ethic.

Will be very happy to have him coming off the bench and giving talented players a rest. A value pick up that is ready to go. Excellent choice.

(Still would have loved a Key Position Forward Though! LOL)

Are you saying Spurr isn't talented, Dockerland1 ?

How very Freo to turn on a rookie after a couple of mistakes in a game where the entire team is getting flogged.

Especially when he's one of the few having a crack.
