Jan 2008: Makes 81 when chasing 413 for victory in a losing Test against India in Perth. Lose by 72.

Oct: 2008: Makes 69 from 195 when all collapse around him in the 2nd Test against India when chasing 516 for vistory.

Nov 2008: Makes 98 out of 210 when everyone fell down around him on a raging green seamer against NZ at the Gabba.

Dec 2008: Australia 3/15 against SA Clarke comes in, bats for 203 min and 141 ball for a patient 62 to help get us out of deep strife. Ended up at 375. Had good partnerships with Katich, then Symonds.

Losing series he makes 62, 88no and 138.

Feb 2009: Comes in with Aust in great trouble at 3/38 in the return series against SA over there, makes 68 to start the recovery, which saw us get to 466 and win the Test.

July 2009: Comes in at 3/78 at Lords against England when we need 522 for victory. We don’t win but Clarke makes 136 and we at least end up with 406.

Ends up leading runscorer in a losing series with consecutive Test performances of 83, 136, 103, and 93.

July 2010: Scores 77 from 349 in the 2nd inning against the Pakis in England to at least give us a chance after being bowled out for 88 in the first innings.

Hmmmm…Seems he can find something, at least when in form, when the team needs him.

I'd only have White if he went straight in as captain. Wouldn't worry as much about the average then. Top notch captaincy overrides that. Not good having him in just as a player though as we have plenty of blokes not playing averaging 50+.

I've seen that be very successful..ie Mike Brearley. That move alone turned the 1981 Series in england mid-stream. Great captaincy is paramount. Why do you think they kept Tubby Taylor in the side so long during one of the great form slump, because his outstanding captaincy more than made up for it. It all starts at the top. Great captaincy will eventually lead to a very good team. So don't knock it. I've been around long enough to see it work. Not as if White isn't good enough to play test cricket anyway even if a few are better.

pretty predictable team really....

at least dougie bowled well and took a few wickets in the last new south wales match... and obviously khawaja is playing very well for NSW over the last 15 months.

we've bought in three youngsters whose recent formlines are questionable at best and that's put us in a very tight position.

we'll see what happens. hard to see us winning. sydney will suit england even more so than melbourne and adelaide.

anyway. my old man has paid for my flights up to sydney to watch the game so it should be a good 5 days or however many of them i can make :/

as long as the 3 main bowlers in the team are hilfenhaus, johnson & siddle, australia will wallow at #5 or 6 in the test rankings for the forseeable future. if it's the best the country's got, then it's in trouble. hilfenhaus was out best bowler in ashes '09, but he's a one-trick pony and if the wicket doesnt suit him, then he's useless. test cricket is about troubling the batsman and taking wickets, not containing runs. hilfy has not come close to the former in this series.

many might argue that the australian batting has been woeful. sure, it's been average, but the English bowling has been exceptional. they look as though they'll take a wicket every 2nd ball, continually beat the bat, have variety in their deliveries, they test the batsman. the aussie bowlers have done it on very few occasions this summer on home tracks.

the english have cracked the code to developing very good bowlers over there.

Tubby was one of the all-time great skippers. They were never going to drop him. His captaincy was worth 50 runs alone, and wickets, even with all his crappy scores at the time of his slump.

White wasnt even considered for a test spot, and rightly so. Try to pay attention to the stats. Have look at the past two seasons.

Ironically, the best performed players so far have been 2 x Western Australians (Hussey, Johnson), A Victorian (Siddle) and a single solitary New South Welshman (Haddin).

You may think that, I don't. You also need a skipper to lead a young side as they rebuild. Leadership during a re-build is everything, and I mean everything. That is not rocket science. It's called knowing something about that aspect of sport as an elite coach, albeit an individual sport. I'm not into pride and ego about being better than someone else. IF that's what we need at some stage we do it.

As I said, good captaincy is worth the drop the small average. Brearley proved it no matter how you would like to spin it to suit any argument. Taylor showed that too.

White's also averaged 50 in the last 4 years.
