how doherty remains infront of o'keefe is just a mystery.

i'm not convinced that o'keefe is good enough for international cricket. he's run up is still very average but it has improved from non-existent when he first started playing interstate cricket. a bit like copeland and bird through sheer weight of numbers (not the sort numbers those two were racking up, but in comparison to other state spinners) he really has to get a shot, at least as a back up. the fact he's handy with the bat shouldn't hurt either. He, James Faulkner, and to a lesser degree Coulter-Nile must be sitting at home every time an international squad gets announced wondering what more they've gotta do to just get their name even mentioned as a potential candidate, let alone picked on a tour/squad.

You know what it reeks of to me? Cricket selectors, a lot of them anyway, hate stats. Because anyone can read stats. They like to make it 'ooo anyone can read stats, but only true cricket people know who is good and who isn't' (which is interesting because anyone who has seen doherty know's he is rubbish, and his stats reflect that too).... whilst stats clearly aren't the be all and end all, they certainly paint a fairly solid picture, and when o'keefe's performances are MILES in front of any other state spinner over the last 4 years or so, i can't see how they can justify this continual snubbing.

This works better in the test squad thread. I would have Doherty well in front of SOK in the one day arena.

sorry was in response to the post about 4 before mine re; an article on the tour to india.

i've pretty much given up watching odi's and t20's now to be honest. too much fluff, can't keep track of the games etc,.

Hughes to be pulled from the final three ODIs, instead flying over to India early to prepare for the tour....

Other interesting speculation from that article:

* Possibly taking a 16 man squad containing both Maxwell and Henriques o_O
* Doherty in line to go as back up spinner due to good ODI form....
* Not taking a 3rd spinner, although I guess Maxwell could be included as an option.....

If that's what happens with Hughes, well and good. Test preparation is far more important than what amount to little more than practice games against the West Indies. Hughes has proven his worth to the limited overs side, which is all limited overs cricket is about at this stage - seeing who might be there for the world cup.

Some of the other speculation is disturbing - picking players for Tests based on one day form, consideration of Maxwell and Henriques, etc.

Its like the selectors don't even watch the Ryobi. Faulkner in? He hasn't been THAT good in domestics this year. Coulter Nile must be wondering whether he's had his pass stamped already.
Faulkner hasn't been great in the Ryobi prior to this season but there is no doubting he has had a very good Ryobi this season. Faulkner and NCN's stats with the ball are very similar in the Ryobi this year but Faulkner has been a fair bit better with the bat (not to discount NCN's hitting ability, Faulkner is averaging 43 though).

Faulkner has 62 more runs than Coulter-Nile from the same number of innings, and has just 1 less wicket - at the same average, but with a better economy rate. He should have been in the squad before Henriques to begin with.

Coulter Nile has looked better than Faulkner this year.

Anyone should have been in the team before Henriques, except he's a former U19 captain so he's guaranteed a golden ticket,

Starting XI was apparently named yesterday. I haven't seen it previously so thought it was worth a post.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-west-indies-2013/content/story/602866.html

Australia 1 Phillip Hughes, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Usman Khawaja, 5 George Bailey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Clint McKay.

Faulkner to debut in place of Doherty. Khawaja back and Finch with most likely a full Windies series to try and make some runs
