Paul Adams, Nicky Boje, Johan Botha, Paul Harris, Imran Tahir, Keshav Maharaj, that's all I can think of in my lifetime. Tahir and Botha had decent one day careers.

Edit they played some white off spinner for a few tests a couple years ago as well.
I still can't believe we are in the a world where Nicky Boje has an ODI ton...

Did he earn himself a ban? And how did he do this?
He asked for his account to be cancelled and incessantly trolled the big bash final thread until his account was eventually cancelled. I'm about 70% sure that his alias is already relentlessly posting on this board.

Are you thinking of Dane Piedt? Played 7 Tests, but don't think he's white.

Was playing test cricket 3 days ago.

Must be pretty awful playing for South Africa when you see things like this. It does make me think that AB's decision to retire was more about the administration and less to do with International Cricket itself. It would be easy to call Olivier selfish but far too many players with potentially long international careers have walked away recently, cricket in their country is clearly rotten.

**** that's terrible news to be honest. Olivier was really starting to make his mark on the international scene. Massive shame - test cricket can't be losing such quality players.

No, no, meant Simon Harmer in that post!
Ah ok, yeah was a bit of talk already about Harmer's impressive career at Essex on the previous page of this thread so presumed you must have been talking about Piedt.

Why do people feel sorry and sympathetic for an international cricketer at 26 ditching a very promising international career while still fresh from having the best series of his career leading his team to a test series victory but call West Indian cricketers mercenaries and sell outs for playing t20 leagues around the world without retiring?

Is there much sympathy in Olivier's case? I haven't seen too much of it in the discussion since it was announced, more pragmatism. As noted he wasn't being held back or affected adversely by a quota system at all (in fact appeared to be thriving). Rilee Roussow got a bit of stick for his decision after a lot of persistence from management in his presence in the South African short format sides coming good then leaving. Kyle Abbott people were fairly empathetic given there were a couple of high profile moments where it had intervened in his international career.

Anyone calling Gayle a mercenary is a halfwit. The guy played (very successfully) over 100 tests for his country. Dwayne Bravo also did a lot for international cricket. Pollard and Narine were always short format specialists.

This article was seriously informative a year and a bit back:

Yorkshire must have some seriously good coin and fringe benefits to offer if they can outbid a two year offer by just one year. Presuming that Olivier would be in the middle tier for his next contract.

Makes you wonder what exactly is happening in South African cricket. Oliver is a gun, and you'd have to think he would have continued to get fairly regular Test Cricket for RSA for the foreseeable future.

The reason people view Kolpaks differently to T20 mercenaries is that Kolpaks are still playing FC cricket, and are generally doing it more for a reliable and steady income rather than big bux.

I have no problem on him leaving and looking for better pastures btw. I've always thought Ngidi was a better prospect for South Africa than Olivier anyway, quota or without quota.

But much of the reaction on this incident has either been sympathetic towards Olivier's choice or criticisms levelled on the South African board when what he has done is not much different to what the Windies cricketers do, for which they regularly get a lot of stick for.

Random stat alert:

It took 34 series for a team other than England or Australia to win in South Africa.

Before last week literally no other team had done it.

Fair to say bravo polland and co coped so much heat in part becasce they took the easy root plain and simple. Money driven for them where as Oliver's has no clue if he gets a game bases on skin color.

If what I'm hearing is correct being white in SA with money is so unsafe I don't blame him one bit

That doesn’t begin to even attempt to understand what happened with the West Indians. It is way, way deeper than that.

It was money base but! Wasn't the board paying b grade wages was that the term?. Players got ripped off and quit for the cash in thr shorter form. is that close ?
