Let's get it straight.

Poms batsmen haven't hardened themselves for spin, but the main problem for me is their inability at the moment to run through sides. They rip out the top order and then go on holiday. You can't give the oppositions tail end an extra 150 runs and expect to win the game.

And oh yeah, Herath is actually a world class spinner now.

The English are really having problems with World class spin! Not looking like that team we saw beat the Aussies!

Looking forward to see them play the Saffas...think Saffas would win though even without a first class spinner!

Sri Lanka won the toss and batted.

SL 2/21 - Dilshan, Sangakarra (first ball:eek: for the second time), Anderson on a hat trick.

Misses the hat trick, but knocks over Thirimanne.

3/30.

Why? What did he say?
He was deadset barracking when the Poms got 3 early wickets, and started calling all the Pommy players by their first name. Then he's started becoming the England captain in the box again and telling "Andrew" what field he should have out there, such as a short leg. When they got one, he's like, GOOD they're listening!

Ah well, that's balancing it from last Test when him and Beefy were in the com box when their batting collapsed, it was like a funeral in the box

SL coming back!! Apparently the pitch is flat! Wanna get around 350 at least!

Think England may win this one though unless they have problem with spin again.

Was playing with statsguru. Jayawardene's stats in Galle and Colombo(SSC) (just 2 grounds)

Match--Runs--Avg---100
43 ---4814 -78.91 -17

If you remove these two grounds from his stats, it becomes

Match--Runs--Avg---100
87-----5562--39.16--14

Don't think I have come across many such mind-boggling stats before. I'm not even considering home/away (there are 3 more grounds in SL where he has played 29 tests and averages about 42 which is good but nothing in comparison to Galle or SSC) or subcontinent/outside SC etc.

Yep he's your original home town boy. I honestly think he's better than that though. It's as bad as Sarwan in terms of the difference between home and away.

Absolutely, his stats always baffle me, he is too good a player to have such a poor away record, especially outside the subcontinent. Not sure why he hasn't been successful. And this record is beyond belief. He has scored half of his runs in just 2 grounds at a Bradmanesque average and even in SL he averages just 42 outside those 2 venues.

Mate with all due respect you're wrong.

The batting in the subcontinent is a way bigger problem than the bowling.

Even in UAE the English quicks did a bloody good job on utterly unhelpful pitches and they've gone alright on the whole in SL.

Swann hasn't always been at his best which has been a problem but overall they've done enough for England to have won at least 3 maybe 4 of the Tests that have been played this winter if the batsmen had maanged to put in half way decent performances.

This. When your consistently bowling teams out for under 300, whether you have them 3/5 or 2/200, the bowlers are more than doing their job. Getting bowled out consistently for under 250 however is pathetic from their batting group.

Yes, even the English batsmen have acknowledged that they have been letting the bowlers down. It really isn't a problem with the bowling.

I'm glad Cook and Trott got out. I don't mind watching KP and Bell but Trott and Cook are snorestuff.

This is farcical. Either change the laws of cricket, or tell Dilshan to bowl the friggen ball. Where did this warning system and 5 run penalty thing come from? If anyone should be getting in strife for time wasting its Dilshan

Some pretty bizarre stuff there with the warning to KP. I would have thought the umpire was telling him not to swap his hands over before the bowler releases the ball. The fact that you could be warned for that is new to me.

Unfortunately the commentators are clueless idiots who are less informed than we are.

Nah Dilshan's totally in the right for me. If a fielder tries to change his position as the bowler runs in the batsman is allowed to back away and abort the delivery, and for me it makes perfect sense that a bowler can abort his delivery if a batsman starts changing his grip/batting hand as he runs in. Time wasting warning just given to ensure an ugly game of cat and mouse didn't start up (or contiune) and it makes sense to give it to the batsman. There's nothing stopping KP from changing his grip and switch hitting after the ball has been released, just before. In the fielder changing position example, the time wasting warning in that case would be given to the fielding side.

Didn't they ban him from playing a switch hit shot, not just changing grip before the bowler bowls?

Well they haven't banned him at all from what I understand, however he's been warned that if he changes the grip, starts moving his stance etc and it ends up with the bowler quitting the delivery the blame's going onto him and runs will be taken off, and so they should, he's been warned by the bowler he's not going to be allowed to do it, so why try? But obviously if KP changes the grip and ends up batting as a left hander after the ball has been released the bowler can't say '**** that'....

Apparently the law is that he can do it as soon as the bowler's back foot hits the ground, he doesn't have to wait until he has released the ball.

I've got no idea if this was the case this time or not.

From where I was, it just 'felt' he was doing it a bit early. Free for replay to prove me wrong though. Anyway, I feel the umps handled it very well. Dilshan and KP aren't the sort to back down so it was nice to see it sorted out quickly.

samit patel a throwback to england's 'county all-rounder' days. ealham and all those turds who were not much more than bits and pieces players. better off picking a bowler or batter with guys like bresnan, broad, already in the team.
