Heard this one from a pretty strong source:

GWS to Salary dump Lachie Whitfield and Richmonds first pick to St.Kilda for minimum chips.

St.Kilda will offer that pick, their own first round pick and steak knives to GCS for Ben King.

Whitfield still on big money for a further three years, but St.Kilda have space and will pay it. Back end Ben King and they are away.

Could land Whitfield and King in the same trade period, whilst also finishing top 6. The Ross Lyon era.
I don’t see how we could fit both king and Whitfield contracts in ?

Its worse than Jack Bowes.

Whitfield is on 950k a year, for three more years.

GWS have 6 guys earning over or around a million a year. Its no sustainable with guys like Ash, Cadman, Green, Callagahn all needing big pay rises in the next few years.

Whoever can take on his contract holds all the aces

Which st kilda cant only a bottom 4 team could.

Which st kilda cant only a bottom 4 team could.

A fair bit of space in the cap apparently given Steele and King are the highest paid on $750k odd.

Hill’s contract is done end of next year and he will get half of what he is on now (or will be elsewhere).

Rest of the squad are on pretty average salaries. As befits a bottom 4 squad.

If the dump did happen, would prefer we keep the first round pick. We have the forward line covered and need young midfielders, not key forwards.

A number of re-signings announced by the club.

Stocker, Webster, Byrnes, Jones.

No issue with the first 3, but Jones is a bit of a head scratcher.

Was a fan a few years back but he appears well and truly done.

Maybe backing the new fitness staff to get him right.

Has only signed a one year contract on what you would think is pretty low coin.

Jones offers some speed in the Midfield.

And that's probably what saved him

I think so, the guys we lost are surplus to needs and to be honest need a fresh start to invigorate their own careers.

The players we got in are still young and hit areas we need to improve in.

It would have been nice to get a top 10 draft pick but realistically we didn't have the player capital going out to do that

Billings and Gresham are has beens with poor attitudes stemming from a really bad point in our clubs history development wise. Glad to see both go to be honest.

Coff sad to see him go but he felt he needed a fresh start and fair enough. One more leg injury could see his career in free fall

Dow and Henry add speed in areas we need and we have 2 picks inside 25 so can’t complain too much. We’re going down a youth route building towards something over the next few years so this was definitely a good first up trade period under RTB/SOS

Happy- Holding 2x First Round Picks and moving on 3x overpaid fringe players is never a bad thing.

Improved our Draft position
Improved our TPP

Complete bullshit

Classic BigFooty "strong source"

It's pretty sideways in terms of player movement. Doubt Henry and Dow offer more overall on field next season than Gresham, Coffield and Billings. Glad that we're going to continue hitting the draft though. Clearly we're banking on natural improvement from the young core already in place.
Yep fair call

13 and 21 are good picks and need to be nailed

That's gonna be the difference in the medium term.

Definitely an improvement with player movement if you consider Coff hasn't played in 2 years and Billings would have been left to rot in VFL. Henry will be straight in to the 22 adding needed outside pace.

Gresham out for Dow helps us win more 1st possession, our area of need. Gresham not kicking into the f50 helps our other area of need. We'll also save $250-300k in cap space.

Outs:
1x best 22
2x depth players
$1.7M in salary

Ins:
2x best 22 players
Improved draft position
$0.9M in salary

Neither Henry or Dow are guaranteed starters. Billings with a full pre season would be comfortably in our best 22 IMO. Coffield was the natural replacement for Webster moving forward but injuries are the big question mark (same with Billings). Gresham has flaws but at the end of the day he gets a decent amount of the footy, wins clearances and kicks goals. Easily starting 18 for us.

I see Henry as a slight upgrade on Byrnes and Dow battling with Jones for a spot (who also would comfortably be best 22 if not for ongoing injury issues).

JB wasn't wanted. Perhaps in your view he was best 22, but so far as RTB goes he wasn't even in the best 44.

The rest are a value judgment. Be interesting if Jones and Dmac manage to stay fit but l think the new boys will get first crack at the sav.

Sideways in talent but I think there's value in doing it, billings, Gresham in particular had gone stale and this may not improve the list but certainly changes the group dynamic.

I think that's the key point. Both of them were substantially over paid and had plateaud below expectations.
StKilda needed to straighten up their list and these 2 guys fell outside of that.
Dow and Henry might have less talent but they're younger, cheaper and fit needs better.
On the surface it was a fairly unspectacular trade season for StKilda, but it's been a stellar period for housekeeping. There'll be a LOT of money to throw around from next year.
