Our usage of our salary cap has allowed it, a new way to rebuild (your mob is in prime position to try it post tassie)

100%. I hope we do the same. Just that super smart staging of contracts. Keep pushing back the cap space until it's at bursting point then grab all the free agents you want. In theory too if let's say you are targeting like 5 years where all your players are at peak age and you contend, anyway you bring in along the way you can back load the contract and then trade them out later if needed.

Similar in a way to Dees signing up all their guns, then now the aggressive rebuild is on they will ship them out. You'd do this in the pursuit of a flag. Hope it works out for the Saints.

Hirdy on trade radio today said teams not bring players in are at risk of others they want to keep being poached. Saints are happy for Steele to go and were probably expecting Marshall. Fought off chasers for Wilkie and Windhager. Are there any that teams could sneak in on eg. Higgins, Clark, Byrnes, Garcia or Sharman?
Sharman is an interesting one potentially. Had a career best year this year. Can be quiet, but when he is on he can be one of the best on ground. Out of contract next year.

Hall and Boxshall both had great first years, so I imagine they will have plenty of interest when they come out of contract next.

a 2 year ticking time bomb right now. Clearly all in on winning and moving forward quickly to show NAS they are serious. Could blow up in there face or could be money well spent
Yep, big risk, but I think it's smarter than either just letting the list tick along, and hoping that you can nail enough middling draft picks to build a contending list, or blowing up the list entirely in search of high picks.

We're not a big club, and history has shown that we don't consistently attract high end players through trade We're also not doing a ground up re build, and it isn't really the climate for that at the moment with Tassie on the horizon. We've got to do something to change our fortunes, and if this all fails, well it's not like we'll be in a worse state than we have been for the past 15 years.

lol who knows , half his luck if he is , it’s the Australian way, but one things certain, glad to have him on side

Honestly if that presser wasn't a PR pisstake he probably needs to retire.

I’m sure it was music to the ears of any soon to be OOC saints player, like Wilson next year, that the Saints have oodles of money left in the kitty.

If JSOS is on $850k someone like Wilson is looking at, what, $1.2/1.3mpa?

We have plenty.

You guys don't seem to realise we've forward paid everyone. Our plan is to go fishing again next year with the next lot of free agents

One thing I’ve wondered, if NWM stays at the same level or even improves, what do you think his next deal in 2 years will be per year? $2mpa is obviously the starting point, but how high do you reckon the figure goes.

I doubt anyone could afford a contract much more than what he's on for the long term.

But it wasn't really about the money as long as we match what the Adelaide clubs offer it will again come down to family and lifestyle vs how much he loves the Saints and how we are going onfeild.

But you don’t. That’s the point most people keep making.

You can’t have everyone in your best 23 on $850k plus, because you can’t fit the rest of your list under the TPP, and that will cap you out 3 years from now.

It might be sustainable right now and next year, but it’s not sustainable for the life span of all the 5 year contracts you hand out this trade period. Or next year. Even if you have banked an extra 5% of the salary cap for the next 3 years.

As soon as you’re 2023 and 2024 draftees start asking for pay raises on their first non draftee contracts, you’re in trouble or you start losing your role players.

And that’s going to occur during the lifespan of the 5 year contracts you hand out this year and next year.

Lucky that, with the exception of maybe 3 players currently on our list (King, Owens, Higgins) - 5 now with the extensions of Phillipou and Windhager, all other players aren't contracted beyond the next two years.

Maximum flexibility.

Again, please don't make the mistake of all other oppo supporters and the broader AFL media by thinking St.Kilda has stuffed this up. We have been meticulous with our cap.

No other club has been this strategic with their TPP and contract management, we have gone down this path as it is one of the only avenues which will allow us to compete.

Will it bite us - maybe.

This is not a Ned Guy scenario, we are not blowing it all up just to have cap issues in future.

Again, say it with me, meticulous.

That's sort of irrelevant unless there is another club willing to pay Wilson $1.3m a year though.

If rival clubs are offering him 800k and so are we, I can't see why he'd be upset about not getting $1.3m and leave?

These stories have something in common but I just can't quite put my finger on what

The Pies have been thrown into ‘chaos’ — and these disastrous deals are to blame

"While Guy is the overall list manager, he can’t be the only man at fault. Graeme ‘Gubby’ Allen and current national recruiting manager Derek Hine have been part of the club’s rise up the ladder, which could crash down in 2021.

Guy wasn’t involved in the moves that brought Levi Greenwood, Daniel Wells and Chris Mayne to the club on overpriced deals, with the Pies forced to pay top dollar for their stars."
