I can't believe he lasted this long. Wonderful player. You did well to jag him with pick 21. I had him in my top 5 or 6

Yep I had him at number 7 behind Lockett, Stewart, Riewoldt, Baldock, Harvey and Loewe. Would've taken him at 12 but needed a KPF so I went with Gehrig, and I was hopeful Smith would slide to 21, whereas Gehrig to 21 was very unlikely considering everyone wanting the big forwards early on. Very happy.

Well played sir!
I would have had (in order) Lockett, Stewart, Harvey, Roo then either smith or baldock

I can still see some Absolute bargains available too

I reckon there's going to be some pretty ordinary footballers getting picked by the time we hit the benches... :D

Sean Ralph-Smith?:p

For all taking part - there is still a St Kilda back pocket out there who regularly played for Victoria in the 80's. Nowadays he'd be seen as a hipster, (ooooh cryptic Smoke very cryptic)! :D

Which is what makes this a very interesting concept. I was a long way from being alive to see any of the three players I've picked so far and have mainly relied on what they achieved and how they are spoken about by people on here and in general. Apart from it being incredibly difficult to compare players from today to those that played in the 60's and 70's in the first place.

I reckon there's going to be some pretty ordinary footballers getting picked by the time we hit the benches... :D

Yep, got a feeling we might not need to go that far... :p

Thing is we don't have the greatest history of forwards, plenty of fine defenders, lots of excellent mids, but when it comes to goalkickers and ruckmen the stocks are pretty thin. Harvey, Smith, Burke, Hayes, Winmar, all damn fine players but I wouldn't make them the starting point for a Saints all-time team.

So far:
1. goodie23 - Tony Lockett
2. Defacto - Nick Riewoldt
3. Uncle Barrels - Ian Stewart
4. Armitage2Riewoldt - Darrel Baldock
5. 12Chill - Robert Harvey
6. Half Back Pocket - Stewart Loewe
7. felsty - Lenny Hayes
8. saintkildaman - Nathan Burke
9. saintkildaman - Nicky Winmar
10. felsty - Peter Everitt
11. Half Back Pocket - Bill Mohr
12. 12Chill - Fraser Gehrig
13. Armitage2Riewoldt - Verdun Howell
14. Uncle Barrels - Bubblehead Hall
15. Defacto - Trevor Barker (stolen)
16. goodie23 - Dave McNamara
17. goodie23 - Carl Ditterich
18. Defacto - Stephen Milne
19. Uncle Barrels - Brendon Goddard
20. Armitage2Riewoldt - Barry Breen
21. 12Chill - Ross G. Smith
22. Half Back Pocket -

Top five for me would be Plugger, Baldock, Stewart, Barker, Riewoldt.

Pick #21: Ross G. Smith
(St Kilda) 234 games - 230 goals
173cm - 75kg

An extremely fit rover (for his time) and being able to run all day, he played in our 1966 grand final victory and racked up 18 disposals, the 4th most for the team. In the 1971 grand final loss to Hawthorn he gathered 17 disposals (3rd most for the Saints) and kicked a goal. He won the 1967 Brownlow Medal with 24 votes in 17 games, and of those 17 games, he polled brownlow votes in 12! 1971 was considered his best season by many, he polled 16 brownlow votes and finished 8th (Ian Stewart won that year) while another Saints player John McIntosh polled 18 votes, what might've been had there been less players taking votes from him. He won the Saints Best and Fairest in 1967 and 1971 and captained us from '70-'72. Had stats to rival champion Ian Stewart, averaging more disposals and more goals a game over his career then Ian (smith averaged 23 disposals and about 1 goal a game over his career). Despite not being mentioned much, clearly a champion and underrated player of our club.

Place him at the next ruck rover position alongside Robert Harvey thanks. 3 brownlows between the two of them, midfield is shaping up nicely. Stoked to get Ross Smith at this pick.

bastard!!!!! i thought he'd slide

Here I am thinking I have good chance of picking some sliders with my consecutive picks when all 6 players get picked up within the last 10 picks. Enjoying this immensely so far.

Im guessing ill need to go for the one and only, much maligned Justin Koschitzke, not many solid forwards left and he was as good as any.

Full Forward thanks!

How close were you to picking Max Hudghton over one of those?

thought he might have gone by now.

This is good viewing by the way. Good to see you guys enjoying it.
Bobby Murray's famous drop-kicks must be in the mix down back too.
Not to mention Neil Roberts - Brownlow medallist.
