Pick 15 - Christian Salem
Midfielder
185cm - 78kg

Silky smooth left footed midfielder who would add outside run and class to the Swans midfielder.

Salem has a hard edge and can play as an inside and outside midfielder and win his own footy.

Strong body and can play straight away and impact immediately in a team in its premiership window.

With thanks to Knightmare for the description...
Pick #16 Geelong – Blake Acres (WA – Mid/Util)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 07/10/1995
Recruited from: West Perth
Style: David Mundy
Player comparison:
Range: 10-20
Profile: Acres is a high production player with some real versatility and the ability to play through the midfield, up forward or down back well. At the next level despite his versatility I see him as someone who will become a midfielder at the next level. Acres is all class and not only is he excellent by foot on both sides but he also has more time and space than the next guy making him hard to catch. He’s got a complete game as someone who is very capable of winning his own ball inside but then can also find the footy outside. He can hit the scoreboard as a midfield. He can push forward and take a mark. And he sticks his tackles.
Perhaps due to their success over the last six years or so, Geelong appear to have escaped the blowtorch that is currently being applied to St Kilda's list and was formerly applied to the Bulldogs. Having traded away Podsiadly and with Hawkins' crook back, Geelong is in need of a KPF, but they do have Shane Kersten knocking on the door with Mitch Brown, Joel Hamling and Josh Walker also on the list. They also need a KPD to replace the aging Tom Lonergan in time, but have Rivers as cover for now with Mackie as the third man up, and the superb Harry Taylor is still young enough - that being said, I thought long and hard about taking Darcy Gardiner here.

The Cats have a list of midfield talent, but many of their top liners are getting long in the tooth, such as James Kelly and Jimmy Bartel, Corey Enright is getting on and Joel Corey has retired. I considered Zak Jones (who they're keen on) but Acres is more talented than Jones, can play half back or on the ball, has both inside and outside credentials and importantly is a very strong grab; the perfect replacement in time, one feels, for Bartel.

Rahul, have at it.

Cameron McCarthy is a raw product from South Fremantle who represented WA at the Under 18 carnival and earned All-Australian honours. Cameron has seemingly bolted from nowhere into first round consideration this year and this is a testament to his hard work and output at the Championship. Whenever McCarthy is targeted up forward, he looks dangerous and likely to take a mark. McCarthy has a strong pair of hands and has brilliant aerial ability; he is capable of outmarking his opponent with his reach. This is easily the standout in his game, McCarthy’s ability to continually present an option to his team-mates effectively lifts the efficiency of the entire forward line. He is also a fantastic reader of the ball and he can out-judge his defender when his side goes inside 50. McCarthy also has a unique and reliable kicking routine which works well for him, as evident in his game-winner against Vic Country. One aspect of his game that sets McCarthy apart from other key forwards is his mobility and agility. McCarthy is capable of crumbing and he is clean when the ball hits the ground. McCarthy has tremendous upside and has a higher ceiling than any key forward in this draft bar Boyd when his background is put into perspective; he only recently decided to pursue football over cricket.
PLAYER PROFILE – CAMERON McCARTHY
D.O.B: 01/04/1995
HEIGHT: 195cm
WEIGHT: 89kg
WAFL CLUB: South Fremantle
STRENGTHS: Fantastic mark, great vertical leap, converts opportunities, athletic, “X-FACTOR type forward”
WEAKNESSES: Injuries, late starter to the game, still raw

193cm isn't really all that tall anymore though is it - although I supposed Delaney is 193cm - but my mail was he was 193cm only in high heels...

I take it he's grown?
Still young so will grow little bit more, and I never trust the heights that are listed anywhere.

I agree with this Shaun. Hence my desire to have 4 draft picks...3 midfielders & a young KDP...
(imagine Billings, Hartung and Gardiner & snaring Jansen or Robertson etc at pick 50ish).
At the risk of hijacking the thread, I thought we were only going into the ND with three picks this year?

Pick 21 Port Adelaide - Zac Jones (VIC – Def/Mid)
Height: 181cm, Weight: 74kg, DOB: 15/03/1995
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
Style: Scott Burns
Player comparison:
Range: 20-40
Profile: Younger brother of Melbourne’s Nathan Jones. He’s not the same level midfielder as Nathan but has some similar traits with that same hardness and love for the contest to him but at this point is probably better suited as a defender. Jones down back can play effectively both as a rebounder and shutdown player. Jones by foot is an efficient user of the footy hitting his targets over a variety of distances and does so consistently. He is also an excellent mark for his size both 1v1 but especially coming off his man to take an intercept mark. Physically he has the strength to give with stronger players but then the pace to go with the quicker players. He also provides good run and carry and has an above average burst of speed to him. Late season Jones has also showed some midfield potential stepping into the midfield v Calder and taking over the game so it may be something he can with further time and development he does more often.

Pick 22: Trent Dumont

How good is Rahul? This write up is actually from his mock draft...please note the pick number!!

Struggled here did Brisbane, looked at six others (we still have our wish list in tact though) but seemed Karma-like really =

PICK 22: Brisbane Lions
Trent Dumont, Norwood

186cm 85kg
Comparison: Ollie Wines
Dumont is a big bodied midfielder that has played senior SANFL football for Norwood. He really stood up in their Finals series and this ability to play well when it is on the line excites me. Dumont represented South Australia at the Under 18 Championships and despite not winning All-Australian honours, he did put in some solid performances. Dumont has great core strength and uses this to his advantage when winning clearances and contested possessions. He is always in and around packs and stoppages, either waiting for a receive or going in and working for the hard ball himself. Dumont's decision making was splendid at U18 level with the increased pressure in the SANFL helping the likely first round pick. Off his preferred foot, Dumont's skills are at an acceptable level for a possible Top 15 pick; however, he still needs to do some work on his non-preferred so he doesn't get exposed in the AFL.

PICK 23: Adelaide
Patrick Cripps, East Fremantle
192cm, 90kg
Player Comparison:
Patrick Cripps was a consistent performer for WA throughout the U18 carnival. The cousin of ex-Saints Jamie persisted on the inside and managed to win contested ball in large numbers in most of his games, he averaged over 6 clearances. Cripps is an outstanding stoppage player who excels in tight. He uses his bigger body to his advantage and can bully his way around contests often (while I doubt he is 192cm as some mention, he definitely has a height/strength advantage). He has nice, clean hands when surrounded by opposing players and is capable of getting off a quick handball if he is under pressure. In the AFL, he will have to improve his kicking and decision making.

Thanks to Rahul for the write-up.

Pick 24 -Dayle Garlett

Quality midfielder who can sneak forward and have an impact. Garlett has game-breaking pace and uses it to advantage with regularity and is willing to take running bounces and take the ball as far as the opposition let him. Decision making excellent and even when pressured or in congestion still makes the right decision most of the time. Finishing around goal good. Left footer with some nice penetration and hurt factor on his kick and hits his targets easily over a variety of distances. Can also use his right boot and use it well. Has the ability to really hit the scoreboard and be very damaging with the influence he can have on some games. Also when the ball hits the ground I like how he immediately has that quickness of mind and body to get to the ball quicker than everyone and quickly get the ball onto hit boot for a goal. Garlett is also very capable of winning his own ball and playing on the ball and not just outside. Dayle still needs to build more strength through the hips so that he can stand up in tackles, but there is a fair bit to like about his game. Also defensively can continue to get better to compliment his incredible offensive game. The main questions with Garlett are around his personality and attitude and if he can convince a club that he will keep his head down and not be a problem player he has the opportunity to get drafted.

Knightmare's write up.

You bastard! :p I had him tucked away for a later pick, but had to take two solid citizens first. With Rob Kerr using the media to make sure he does not get sacked- "We would have got player X, if this had not happened...."

Please, really? - I am trying to show him the future. ;)

James Battersby (SA – Mid/Def)
Height: 177cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 7/11/1995
Recruited from: Sturt
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 15-35
Profile: He is a real link up and run and carry type off a midfielder or back flank but a high production guy who finds plenty of it and uses it well. Battersby is one of the elite users of the footy in this draft class by hand and foot and he’s someone you want the ball in the hands of. He has real composure to him just making the right decision every time even when under pressure and then hitting his target up seamlessly. Battersby is one of the few players in this draft who can really use the footy on either side by hand and foot. Not only did Battersby play strong footy through the u18 champs but he has also played some strong senior footy back in SA which will please the recruiters showing that he perform against the best young players in the country and against strong bodies.
