Let's look at their history shall we.
One flag (a one point win over Collingwood), 26 (27 after this year) wooden spoons. sure they have provided many Brownlow medals, but apart from Tony Lockett, not one of them (maybe Ian Stewart but he played for Richmond) deserves the tag of champion of the game. Their recruiting is also suspect and they will be down at the bottom of the ladder for the next 5 years at least. If St.Kilda fans were true to themselves they would realise that they are a rabble, and quite frankly they do not deserve to be in the AFL. The modern game has past the saints, they fluked a grand final spot in 97 and it's all been downhill since then. Getting rid of Stan Alves was a joke and it was even more funnier when they hired Dim Watson. The St.Kilda adminstration is easily the worst and least professional in the league. Look at their problems at Colonial Stadium. I think that St.Kilda won't be in the league in 5 years time (as a stand alone entity anyway) so Saint fans had better be prepared

Not one champion?? What are you totally ignorant of football history?

Baldock,Cumberland,Barker,Smith,Davis,Neale,
Ditreich,Morrow,Davis all campions and many others.

You really dont have a clue do you?

And I dont even particularly LIKE St.Kilda but at least I can aknowledge a great footballer if I see one.

Trevor Barker was a good player, but he was not, I repeat not a champion. He was an above average player in a d-grade amateur team in the 80's. And i haven't even heard of half the players you mentioned. St.Kilda is an indictment on the AFL don't worry about it, and they should merge with Melbourne

Ahhh, Geelong4Eva, you're a real student of the game aren't you. I personally can't believe you haven't heard of the St Kilda players mentioned above, such as Baldock. Have you heard of Polly Farmer? I suppose anything pre-Ablett just dosen't register with you. I don't much like St Kilda either, but this is just absolute garbage. Do clubs make a sole contribution to football on the basis of how successful they have been and how many premierships they have? Of course not. Why don't you have a go at the Western Bulldogs, they've only got one premiership as well and only one "champion", Ted Whitten (have you heard of him?) haven't they? St Kilda have about as much change as merging with another club in the next five years as Geelong do. No more and no less.

Geelong4eva what are you saying.

Don't leave yourself open to criticism when we haven't exactly set the competition on fire in the last 40 years.

In part I agree with you, but they have done as much for footy as the Bulldogs and South Melbourne/Sydney haven't they?

Even in modern times players like Harvey and Lockett have been stars for St'Kilda and stars of the AFL.

Sorry mate, I wish I could agree with you on everything but not on this one.

Geelong4Eva,

How are you going? The weather down in Geelong nice?

Myself, I am a little disappointed with another inept performance.

But just briefly, I may have to disagree with you a little. Just a little, because your thoughts were so beautifully articulated.

Now, there a few points that I might need to clarify.

1) We have won one premiership, as you quite rightfully pointed out. By one point too!
And many wooden spoons, I thought 25 but hey, who is counting. The fact is, the competition has only been in existence for just over 100 years and when 3 clubs have won something like 45 premierships between them, obviously some are going to be less successful than others. I was not aware that it was a prerequisite for having to merge or fold. The reality is, despite STILL not receiving any gate receipts from any of our 5 home Colonial matches, our financial position is quite stable. We have spent more money on and off the field than we have ever before. Surely someone whose own team has not won a Grand Final since 1963 and is $3 MILLION in debt should understand this.

2) As Roylion pointed out, if you know nothing about a clubs history or past players beyond the 1980's, please refrain from commenting and making yourself look like an even bigger fool than you have already made of yourself.

3) If you want to raise the ire of a St Kilda supporter, you have gone the right way about it by insulting the ability of Trevor Barker. Obviously you didn't watch too much of the great man. He was one of the most courageous players to play VFL/AFL football. Seen any of his high marks or the way he backed back into packs without any regard for his own safety? I doubt it! Every club during the 1980's tried to lure him away from St Kilda for a hell of a lot more money than we could afford but he refused. He loved the club more than anything and if some of our modern day players showed the pride he showed, perhaps things could be different.

Thats enough, someone with your mental capacity wouldn't be able to understand anymore. Looking forward to your next informative posting.

Until next time

Trevor Barker, Champion Footballer and Champion Bloke too, if he had of played at the Hawks,Blues or Dons in the early/mid eighties that (no disrespect here Saints fans) then with a better team around him he really would have shown just how talented he was.

Geelong4Eva

Everything that you accuse St. Kilda of could also apply to Richmond's performance over the past 20 years. Richmond, in the last 20 years have produced less champion players, have played in less finals, and have had a far more inept administration than St. Kilda. But does the fact that Richmond have about 10 premierships to St. Kilda's 1 entitle them to survive? By your criteria, Richmond shouldn't be around.

Anyway G4E, go to the St. Kilda game this weekend. Go to their members area and tell them how you feel about their club. Then post back here on Monday to let us know how you went.

You have to give the Saints' supporters credit. No frontrunners there.

Its easy to support a club that has lots of success. It takes a REAL supporter to pick a club like the Saints to follow & then stick with them thru thick & thin.

Very important point there Drakey

When asking 'what has St Kilda done for football ?' please consider other things apart from on-field success.

St Kilda's huge and colourfull supporter base is one of the AFL's most precious assets. These fans deserve medals in the way they have stuck with their club through some very tough times indeed and today this supporter group remains as large and as passionate as ever.

And another thing, St Kilda have an exotic-sounding name, a great song and two of the best jumper designs in any footy code anywhere in the world.

The AFL without St Kilda would be unthinkable and unbearable - and I'm not a Saints fan.

Biggest pack of pretenders I have ever seen.

Talking of 1966 have they paid Breen and Jeans yet.

I hope they die a slow death.

Wake up and smell the roses ! The national comp is vital for the future of Australian Rules football and thankfully we got rid of Fitzroy but now we've got to give the Saints the arse because they are ruining the reputation of the league with their lack of knowledge on how to run a successful league team. look at the roos, same resources as St.Kilda, but way better results. Harvey and Burke are no where near the same class as Wayne Carey and the Saints really haven't had a clue since 66. Come on Wayne J, give St.kilda da bullet

All this from a supporter of a team that hasn't won a premiership since 1963 (if my maths is correct that's longer than 1966)
This same team has just been saved by the skin of it's teeth by a bank (of all things!!!) and had it's coach and captain walk out last year.

My 2 cents

Gonzo

Geelong4Eva.

Nice to see you have been allowed by the public library to use a computer system.

Nice to see you understand how to type with a keyboard (just barely mind you)

Apart from the crap that you spoke I would just like to inform you that :

Trevor Barker is the equivalent of 1,000,000 versions of you. Here is an OUT and OUT champion, loyal person and footballer, who was so courageous until the very end that he only announced to everybody (family included) about his illness days before he succumbed to it. An absolute role model on and off the field, a champion friend to many and inspirational in every sense of the word.

What an awe inspiring and brilliant man.

I can't believe any human being (and I haven't got proof that you are one) would have the nerve, stupidity and lack of humility to say something like that.

Karma's a bitch bud. You better get used to it.

I realise not all Geelong supporters are stupid like this, but it must make them feel pretty embarassed reading tripe like yours.

Well said Dr Stein!

Geelong4Eva, that is even more of a reason why he will always be an idol to us!

Yes, we didn't make the finals during his career but his heart bled red, white and black.

Every club in the competition would have welcomed him with open arms and paid a lot more than we could have but he refused.

He loved the St Kilda Football Club. Get used to the fact that some people in football actually played for the love of the jumper rather their own personal glory.

geelong4eva I'm really getting sick of you. I've watched your pathetic poncing about on our board ("our" meaning all the people who are here for something more than the slagging that pervades the newsgroups) with total disgust. You do not seem to realise that mindless slagging with little or no real argument to back up your case is not now and never will be a substitute for interesting comment. There is no grain of wit, nor talent nor skill in evidence in any of your posts.

I have refrained from really getting stuck into you as that would merely feed the sense of satisfaction you seem to get from being publicly humiliated. But no more.

I join with all others who are sick of your crap in saying clean up your act or get off this forum! If you do not you may find that any threads you start are immediately removed, and your user name banned.

I'm quite serious.

Bluey, your a good man

Okay G4E

Let me get this straight. You slag off Trevor Barker for not playing finals, and that was due to the fact that he decided to stay LOYAL to St. Kilda. But in another thread, you have a go at Leigh Colbert for leaving Geelong and calling him disloyal.

What the heck am I saying here? You're a Geelong fan....inconsitency is your trademark.
