Or the saints were the only ones willing to offer up a top 10 pick for but do go off King
If you'd moved Curnow on faster you could've had another pick to get Flanders. And still retained the compo you got for losing TDK and Silvagni.
Landing Reidy is a good start for the replacements though. Good stuff.

Flanders wouldn't get a game in our starting midfield. Certainly not worth moving a Coleman Medallist for. He's going to StKilda for cash and opportunities. Same reason most players move.

He's not better than Cripps, Cerra or Hewett. Cerra is a 50/50 when both are fit, and they'll invest heavily in Smith and Walker who are high end talents. It would be a bad career move for Flanders.
Hewett is agree, two way mids are underrated.

Cerra though… eeesh. What did you pay for him again?

Not sure anyone’s gonna be all that concerned about a player you’re not drafting until next year anyway.

We paid an almost identical price to what St Kilda just paid for Flanders, and at their best they are very comparable players.

Flanders wouldn’t be a top 3 mid at Carlton and Cerra isn’t either. He will start in the guts at StKilda so it’s a good move for him.

Flanders has scope for improvement with us, Cerra looks to be going backwards.

I guess we’ll see in due course

The only reason Cerra stagnated was because of the poor management of his hamstrings last year. He just came 3rd in the B&F off 19 games (which was admittedly surprising) so is clearly doing something right.

I would back them to have similar output next year and similar careers long term. Neither are elite but not every player has to be.

Flanders chose St Kilda for the money and nothing else

"Cash and nothing else"
"Cash and opportunities"

Oh its a game - the next Cartoon nuffie has to add an extra reason why Sam chose St Kilda and so on.

His choices were Saints, Blues, Dees, & Bombers. You honestly think its just for money and opps? I dont believe you.

Here's a fun game:
Name Carltoon’s starting midfield (ruck not included) in 2 minutes:

START..........
  1. Cripps
  2. Jagga?
  3. ?
  4. ?
Ah shit out of time.

Hey did you check out Voss's B&F speech? Bloody hell, staring down the barrel of a pretentious long-winded "We Must Be Better" for the next few year. Zero substance beyond "It doesn’t sit comfortably", which is right up there with "I really hate losing". Any remaining Blues players were probably wondering where in the house their suitcases are and calling Matt Owies for "a catch-up".

I named our starting midfield about half a dozen posts up. Flanders wouldn’t get in it. He’s a decent player nonetheless, who has made a great career choice. Money ✅ Opportunities ✅

Nice rant.

Yeh it’s a truly disgraceful thing to feel a bit stuck behind checks notes current brownlow medallist Matt Rowell…

Did Alex Davies win a brownlow as well?
If I was an Essendon supporter I could think of about 8500 things I’d be more concerned about than Sam Flanders motivation for leaving but I suppose it makes sense to be a bit salty given you guys went hard at him too.

Fair point.

Fwiw this is far to measured and considered a post to be in this steaming piss puddle of a thread.

Stkilda traded what is currently pick 8 for Flanders.

By the time that pick is selected on draft night, it’s Atleast pick 11, potentially pick 12.

The slightest bit of research on Flanders shows he has a 10 game spell as an inside midfielder (role he will play for us) at the back end of 2024.

He averages 31 disposals 1 goal and 1 direct goal assist per game. You line that up against any midfielder and you are calling that an elite output.

The likely net outcome is that we grab TDK JSOS Flanders Aleer Ryan

For

Marshall Steele and some picks whilst turning pick 11/12 into a F1.

The net outcome is a very little asset loss.

Yes, we threw cash at this. But that’s the point of a salary cap and the current machinations we have had to use. Proof will be how good we are by the end of 2027 - when NWM is out of contract and if we can get him to re-sign, then it’s been a win.

Cripps and Hewett are 30 and are likely to see a regression from here as opposed to setting new heights in their careers.

Walsh 25 and major back queries. Good footballers who likely will now play more outside to preserve himself.

Cerra is a very meh player who has never lived up to his hype with very dodgy hamstrings and a player you gauged interest in 12 months ago.

Jagga is 19. Hasn’t played a game and coming off a knee reco.

That’s your midfield.

It’s hard to see why Flanders couldn’t be a top 3 mid for you considering he was a top 3 mid at the suns 12 months ago.

I really don't give a shit to be honest, I just know we're both picking up players that couldn't get past Alex Davies.

It looks nice to say "he was stuck behind Rowell and Anderson" but that's bullshit when a young player like Davies pushed past both of them.

St Kilda must be doing something right otherwise nobody would be wetting their pants as much as you lot are...

The best part is watching the likes of Essendon and Carlton fans who have been absolutely irrelevant for 20 years and are still in wonderful irrelevance. Never mind all St Kilda is doing is spending money that has been banked for a few years....Common sense aint so common

Wish we had the privilege of watching Brayden Fiorini waddle around next season.

Actually you’re getting players that couldn’t get past Alex Davies knocking you back

It's a couple of VFL powerhouse clubs that seem most bothered. I suppose nothing lasts forever. Eventually the gift blockbusters that underpin sponsors, attendances, player movement will fade away and they'll need to stand on their own two feet. Might be good for them.
