Which starting 18 has/had the superior talent.

Hawthorn had the likes of..

Buddy,
Hodge (bonafide elite players).
Mitchell,
Sewell,
Roughead (B to A Graders).

St. Kilda,
Riewoldt,
Hayes,
Goddard (bonafide elite players)
Del Santo,
Fisher,
Montagna (B to A Graders).

Which side had the superior talent base?

I think the Saints have been more consistent in recent history, even though Hawthorn had a premiership. I'll pick the Saints because of Riewoldt, Hayes and Goddard.

Hear is Hawthorns starting 18 from the 08 grand final.
the rating are based of the 08 session only.

HB:Birchall (B+) - Hodge (A+) - Ladson (B+)
C: Lewis (A) - Mitchell (A) - Young (B)
HF:Osborne (B+) - Franklin (A+) - Rioli (B+)
FF:Williams (B+) - Roughead (A) - Brown (B)
Foll:Campbell (B) - Sewell (A) - Bateman (A)

and now Saints starting 18 from this years grand final.

C: Goddard (A+) - Dal Santo (A) - Ray (B)
HF:peake (C+) - Koschitzke (B) - Montagna (A)
FF:Schneider (B) - Riewoldt (A) - Milne (A)
Foll:Gardiner (B+) - Hayes (A) - Jones (B+)

Hawthorn have
A+ = 2
A = 6
B+ = 6
B = 4
C+ = 0
Saints have
A+ = 1
A = 7
B+ = 3
B = 4

Has anyone notcied all the Collingwood fans starting threads about other recent Grand Finalists? Can't you guys just be happy you won and try and degrade other sides?

Insanely biased drivel.
although i dont think im biased towards the saints because they are my second team and i watch every one of there games every year, so i follow them closely. i even went to last years grand final and the first one this year.

but could you rank up saints starting 18 for me?

possible changers are
Riewoldt (A) to A+
Jones (B+) to A
Blake (B) to B+
Schneider (B) to B+

if we were talking about carrers then Riewoldt is defiantly an A+. but when he got back for his injure he never got back to the form he shown before it.

Saints top end talent in 2010, was much better than Hawthorn's in 2008.

Hawthorn in 2008 were great because average guys like Ladson, Osborne, Bateman, Young all had terrific years.

it is quite ironic after reading over the Hawks 08 Vs Collingwood 10 thread where there was discussion about hawthorn beating a better opponent then collingwood did.

that a thread would start about the the hawks and that said opponent.

How is a guy who has never won a club B&F in Goddard and has been ordinary in all but one and a half seasons, better than Luke Hodge? Even the players voted Hodge second this year behind Swan in the MVP and the experts voted him AA captain.

Rioli and Milne isn't clear cut either, particuarly with Milne stinking it up in finals.

Sewell and Montagna is a coin flip. And what about Roughead? He kicked nearly 80 goals that year.

You fail again

A bit sensitive Hawks fans. FYI I still haven't deduced who is superior out of Hawthorn 08' & Collingwood 10' (different matter).

St. Kilda & Hawthorn had/have absolute elite topend talent.

Hodge - Riewoldt (I'd slighty favour Hodge).
Franklin - Goddard (Franklin more talented but Goddard offers more around the ground).
Mitchell - Hayes (Hayes).
Sewell - Fisher (Fisher).
Lewis - Montagna (Joey).

Under that, Saints have Gilbert (who was a borderline AA), Milne & Gram.
Hawthorn had Croad, Rioli, Bateman & Young. Hawks here.

Hawks got more out of their bottom 6. Topend talent, St. Kilda. Overall spread that year, Hawthorn.

IT aint Hodge 2010, it is Hodge 2008.

Hodge n Goddard both came 3rd in their respective club BnF in the appropriate year.

I rate Goddard the better player.

Rioli and Milne isn't clear cut either, particuarly with Milne stinking it up in finals.
Milne kicked 57 goals for the year, to easily be St.Kilda's leading goal scorer for 2010. He kicked 9 goals in St.Kilda's 4 finals including 2 in both of the GFs.

Rioli kicked 24 goals in 2008, and just 4 in Hawthorn's 3 finals.

Milne also averaged more disposals per game this year than Cyril in 2008.

It is a no contest...

Sewell and Montagna is a coin flip.
No it aint...Montagna came 2nd in the saints BnF this year, Sewell was 8th.

Montagna was AA in 2010, Sewell wasn't even in the squad in 08.

Again its a no contest...
Not sure how I fail mate......St.Kilda's elite carried them this year.....in 2008 the Hawks had plenty of help from their lesser lights.

I think the major to key for us in 2008 was Franklin. Leigh Matthews has pretty much said the main reason we won that flag was because of Buddy. I never thought I would see the day in the modern age ( with all the zoning, double teaming, team orientated football etc ) when a player averages 18 touches a game and kicks 113 goals in a season. I mean Jonno Brown or Nick Riewoldt average 15 touches and kick 65 goals and they have had a "great year".

Not trying to be funny here, but if Franklin had have kicked with the same kind of accuracy as someone like Barry Hall, Fevola or Lloyd he would have had around 150 goals that year, as I think with Goals, Behinds and Out On the Fulls all combined he had well in excess of 200 scoring shots.

He completely tore teams apart week in - week out and without him, we probably wouldn't have even made the top four that year.

So Buddy is probably nearly the sole reason we were in the position to win that flag.

How scientific.

Buddy's 113 goal season was equally better than Reiwoldt's 39 as Goddards AA season was over Hodges AA season, while Rougheads 75 goal season wasn't top end.

May as well go:

Roughead > Reiwoldt
Buddy > Goddard
Hodge > Montagna
Mitchell > Dal Santo
Sewell < Hayes

I thought this thread was about top 18 not top 6.

Although if both teams played each other i think it could be a shootout. Buddy and Roughead would destroy Dawson and Fisher meanwhile Riewoldt and Milne would destroy Croad and Guerra.

Let me see.

In 08 the Hawks flogged the Saints in the Finals by 10 goals.

In 2010 the Hawks and saints had a draw.

Hawks in a landslide. :thumbsu:
