Not to sound.. unemotional i guess the word might be... but why are they honouring these two policeman? Like has been mentioned before, many have died in the line of work, i just want to know what's so special about them, and how are they related to the AFL.
Its not specificallythem, blue ribbon day honours all police who died in theline of duty and I assume this is just further to that, it may have been after their murders that the clubs started, notsure but its not only about them

If Essendon cared enough they would go the jumper option, raise alot of money at the same time

Design a quality jumper for a round as a dedication - whack some in stores and donate all profits to cancer research

I eagerly await Army week and Firey week...

Also the fact that the murders happened in Moorabbin.

Essendon got themselves in the poo because they were asked not to wear the armbands, the league offered other alternatives to show support for the cancer awareness, they offered to paint the goal square yellow, have the umpires in yellow, let the bombres wear yellow guernseys. Essendon in their supreme arrogance, basically told the league to get stuffed and did what they wanted anyway, hence the fine. Essendon fans can spin it all they like "RRRAAARRR, THE AFL DOESNT CARE ABOUT CANCER" etc...

i think its terrible the AFL isn't supporting the yellow armbands.
as a saints supporter, when we play essendon next I would be proud to wear a yellow product in support of cancer, or even purchase something from the essendon scum (sorry force of habit) shop in support of cancer research.

I think it would be an amazing sight for essendon and st kilda fans wearing a yellow product or waving a yellow flag in support of cancer research.

it would embarass the AFL as a bonus!

What is it with the yellow armbands? Is that the one and only thing that Essendon can do? The AFL said no, so go figure out something else and stop this endless bloody sooking about it. ffs.

I heard the only reason WCE wear armbands is to hide the syringe marks

Your players are allowed to take drugs, why can't ours wear some fricken yellow armbands?

some excellent non-answers there. I see why some people don't list their teams.

There are other options aside from yellow armbands if Essendon were serious about the issue.

i mentioned an alternative to essendon wearing armbands.

Im sure those sober WCE fans and the club would be interested in something akin to what I suggested.

Jokes aside, and seige mentality aside, fans are fans and Im sure WCE fans and players have been touched with cancer either personally or friends, and soemthing like selling yellow merchandise with the revenue going to cancer research would be something they supported despite the players not allowed to wear them!

I understand why the AFL doesn't want every club wearing differently coloured armbands every week to support whichever of the many worthy causes is top of the agenda that week.

But at the same time it is stupid that they allow the Saints and Hawks to wear this one and deny Essendon their wish to wear yellow bands once a year.

Why not allow every club the choice of wearing a non-black armband in one game every year? It would stop their proliferation and yet give every club the chance to highlight one issue a year if they want to. It would be fair to all and get the AFL of this seemingly petty stance they have got themselves into over Essendon's request.

One word.
Constitution.

Then change it. Stop blaming others for stopping things when it's perfectly within your clubs own power to do something about it (not that I'm against the yellow armband, but obviously the AFL are, so just sort it out yourselves instead of finding reasons not to).

Armbands are great, anything can go.

Oh, so long as it is not yellow or has anything to do with Cancer.;)

What are the AFL up to?

Do they have a bias agaist Cancer? first they allow Ben Cousin's drug rehab money to be set aside from the cap, but do not allow Rama's cancer treatment the same virtue. And now again they are pushing against yellow armbands, while StKilda and Hawthorn play with blue and white ones, that are about 4 times the normal width.

When will common sense prevail? after the debacle with Port's heritage jumper, it is just one head scatching incedent after the other.

Richmond might have something to say about us wearing a yellow strip;)

But seriously how the AFL can say, "no you can't wear yellow armbands" and then suggesting we wear a yellow jumper. Well I would expect that response from a troll on here. What a stupid suggestion. They know Essendon can't and lets be honest, who would want to wear a yellow jumper. It is like they are deliberatley antagonising.

Its much easier to say no than have to pick and choose which causes are worthy, of course this is left over from the last administration and thats why it wont be stopped but they will say no to any new submissions

If Essendon cared enough they would go the jumper option, raise alot of money at the same time

Coming from a Collingwood fan who won't even offer up a clash jumper is pretty rich.

Please get some common sense.

The yellow jumper offer was clearly an antagonising joke, the AFL knew Essendon couldn't and wouldn't do that, but it allowed the AFL to say "we have given Essendon options" in regard to their ridiculous and petty stance.

Haha.. did anyone else notice not all players wore the police band.... I noticed Milne & Gehrig didn't!:D .

... I would have thought a Fireman hat or Dunce hat would have been more appropriate:thumbsu:

Essendon approached the AFL for the players to wear yellow armbands because they wanted to do something to raise the awareness of cancer for their teammate Rama.
The AFL takes a pety stance and says no, and if you do we will fine you $20k.

The players felt so strongly about it and wanted to support their mate, that they decided to cop the fine and go out and wear them.

That is the players standing up and doing something for their sick mates wishes despite a ridiculous fine from an out of touch AFL.

If you see that as arrogance rather than compassion and comraderie then you have serious social problems.

Gehrig started with one but ripped it off after it got stretched by a tackle.

Maybe Milne didn't want one because it reminded him too much of his ride in a divvy van and hours of questioning a few years ago.

Compare all the bullshit involving the yellow armbands to the way the Crows handled the whole blue/prostate cancer campaign. They got together with the AFL, their sponsors and the Pies and raised a significant sum of money for the cause.

The armband situation was getting out of hand. There are better ways to raise awareness of issues.
