Wasn't offered a contract. They tried to manufacture a trade but failed to do so and then delisted him.

West Coast are guaranteed to offer Brown a contract.
Fremantle had a contract in front of him trying to talk him into staying but he had no intentions in staying and re-signing so they delisted him in the end which is how we got him. So yeah he did have a contract offer from the Dockers.

My bad, rules work a bit differently than I thought. If a player is out of contract and doesn't renew, they either have to go through the draft or work out a trade. If they're actually delisted by the club they can be picked up. I can't really see the Eagles delisting him.
see thats problem freo had. if you dont delist him and he moves over here, you have to keep him on the list for the first draft. which means one less pick. i cant see the eagles doing this just to stick it to brown

That's where it differs then. If they officially delisted him, then he was fine to be a delisted free agent. If he wasn't delisted, he would have gone to the draft or PSD.
Since the original club doesn't get any compensation for delisted free agents, I doubt the Eagles will delist Brown. They'll force it to the draft if they can't get a trade, I'd imagine.

which means he just nominates for the PSD and we get him anyway, for nothing

GWS are a threat though with it being reported they are also into him, But if he goes to another club i think it'll be a Melbourne club only. He'll do a Ben Jacobs, Luke Ball maybe if he can't get a trade.

Yeah will be interesting to see how the Mitch Brown thing pans out come the end of the year, We won't be the only club going after him either i wouldn't have thought and his Mum apparently cried and stuff after not getting a trade back at the end of 2012 so she could play a factor in his decision of returning to Melbourne if he gets a good offer. Jay Clark (A bit of a flog, I know) mentioned St Kilda and GWS are the sides interested in him at the moment.
I'd expect he'll be with you next year. The Eagles are pretty fair to trade with (understandable they didn't last year since he was contracted). I imagine you'll get him somehow.
If he is set on you, and money isn't a big factor to him, it should sort itself out pretty easily.

Hopefully if he still has all intentions and eyes set on St Kilda for 2014 Eagles can do a bargain deal with us like we did when they got Jamie Cripps!!

That's pretty much what we did with Josh Hill, then Koby Stevens. We've built a good trading relationship with them over the years (probably because of us actually giving SOMETHING for Andrew McDougall :p), and they've been reciprocal. Since you gave them a fair deal, I'd say they'll end up being pretty lenient.

Yes all Mitch Brown will have to do is not speak to any other club not do any medicals with any club then nominate for either draft. In other words manipulate it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hawthorn go after some of these guys if they don't get a flag this year.

Which of these players are avalible for FA?

Nick Dal Santo is on the FA list but has a trigger clause in his contract that locks him in for 2014, Lenny Hayes, Justin Koschitzke, Stephen Milne, Jason Blake our only other Free Agents. Montagna, Fisher signed for 2014. Jones & Ray are out of contract this year though.

Hayes won't leave, doubt any others besides Dal Santo would leave/be chased.

Dal Santo would be great for any of Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Carlton, Richmond. Especially given they won't have to give up a pick for him.

There's a big difference so far between this year and last year in that Brown is getting regular games and has been playing very well. From what I read, gametime was his main concern (though obviously most/none of us on here really know). Regardless, I doubt he will go to the Saints for free, especially if he keeps up with his current form. Other clubs will jump in and make offers and I doubt Brown has some special affinity for the Saints.

Agree with this. There is a lot of talk on our board that we will get him cheap as chips, or "free", but I find that highly unlikely. If we get him I'm expecting him to cost us at least our 2nd round pick. The other alternative is that we get James Frawley for something a lot more valuable.

Especially if we do land someone like Brown, or Frawley, to go with Rhys Stanley (who has been excellent so far this year on the tall athletic types like Sam Reid and Jeremy Cameron), we will then have a heap of "3rd-tall defender types" in Gwilt, Gilbert (when he's playing down back), Roberton, Dempster, Simpkin and of course Fisher (who is the one we're hoping to free up again by getting someone to play on the "gorillas"), so there would have to be a strong chance that we would be willing to trade at least one of those that won't be playing key position down there, as we apparently were going to last year if we had landed Brown.

B: Gwilt/Roberton/Simpkin, Brown, Geary/Wright
HB: Dempster/Roberton/Gilbert, Stanley, Fisher

There are simply too many there who are good enough to be playing senior AFL and too good to be playing VFL for us to not be willing to trade at least one of them, as most of them are only suited to playing in the backline and there are only 6 spots up for grabs there. That list doesn't even take into account the likes of Newnes, Siposs, Murdoch and Dunell, who can also play down back without any trouble.
