The official capacity of the MCG is 100,018 (I kid you not)!
How they worked that out , I don't know!!! If you do a tour of the MCG, that's what the tour guides will tell you!

Do you know if that includes standing room?

It seems weird to build 100,018 seats.

Includes small amount of standing room.
I suppose if a party of jockeys came along they may be able to stretch the capacity to 100,025:D
Also it's all about OH&S these days so very little standing room is becoming the norm in stadiums around the world!

York Park isn't 23k - don't use Aus stadiums, it's not a reliable source - it's 21k now according to the Examiner and council. Was previously 20k before the new stand. I know this through many hours of research as I wrote the York Park article on Wikipedia.

The 100,018 includes standing room. It’s every seat in the house plus the prescribed amount for each standing bay. The 100k “seated” figure is wrong, not sure how many can be put into standing room but it’s a lot more than 18!

For some events where they’re expecting a full house, they might lower the number of standing tickets sold (or not sell standing room at all) as the place will be choc-full anyway.

I think the 08 GF had 100,012 as the official figure – pretty unbelievable.

I *think* (please correct me otherwise) that you can buy passes in the MCC (some bars and dining rooms etc) that don’t actually include a reserved seat – that’ll vary the figures too. I think every other ticket in the ground (for an event such as the GF) is a prescribed seat or standing bay, even if it’s in a corporate box or never gets sat in.

I swear I've read before that there are between 97k and 98k seats.

2008 GF did indeed have a 100,012 official attendance. I remember that was then quoted as the official capacity after that.

Then the first 2010 GF had an official attendance of 100,016. I then saw that figure being applied as the official capacity.

This is the first I have heard of 100,018 as capacity. Surely its not that hard for them to work out exactly how many seats there are, how many standing room bays they have and how many people per SR bay they are allowed, and come up with an official figure? They seem to just make it up as they go along.

Where did you get your figure of 54,600 capacity for Adelaide Oval after redevelopment?

That was a very good question and after going back through my history I got it from Wikipedia. There was however no source for that information, and I have been trawling looking for something to back it up.

While I could not find any info to support it, I did find information on the official website www.adelaideovalredevelopment.com.au that says that the seated capacity will be 50,000. Given that there is substantial standing room on the hill, I'd say that the official capacity will be over 50,000. I will adjust the OP in the AO thread though as there is no source for the figure. I clearly just did a quick scan of the page to get the figure without reading it properly

As mentioned earlier by RodneyMaynard, the BBL are looking to expand into a ten team competition, making two new spots up for grabs. the markets sugested by BBL boss Mike McKenna are; Geelong, Gold Coast, Canberra and Newcastle.

If Newcastle get in, then is there a possibility to play one AFL match a year there or a nab cup match? Also, what would be the capacity of the new stadium be?

to be honest, I doubt newcastle will get it. The most likely would be either Gold Coast or Canberra, Victoria already has two teams and Newcastle doesn't have the stadium.

Number One Sports Ground has a capacity of 20,000 but only about 1,000 seats.

I think 100,016 is the highest attendance since the redevelopment, and 100,018 has been the official capacity since the redevelopment.

I think things probably get muddied a bit with (a) the number of standing room tickets they sell in each bay (actually decreases I believe if all seats will be filled) and (b) any corporate packages where the game is actually watched from behind the glass.

FWIW I think they’ve been reasonably consistent with the 100,018 figure. If it is the case then anything over 100k is quite unbelievable, even 1% of ticket-holders as no-shows is over 1,000 tickets. There’ll always be some no-shows at any event for whatever reason.
