Analysis Stadium deals - what, how, when - why we need a new one and the SA footy paradigm shift happening

A hotel for those:

a. attending AFL (from interstate/country)
b. attending cricket (from interstate/country)
c. visiting north adelaide & city
d. attending events at the festival theatre, casino etc.
e. here for major events such as tour down under, clipsal500

Yes because there aren't enough of those around already scattered across North Terrace and Hindley Street, just for starters.

It’s just an awful concept on multiple levels.

We currently have a stadium central to the city and surrounds which has been pretty much universally lauded for its aesthetic and fan experience.

This proposal looks like it will ruin the look of the Eastern stand, take away the views from the stadium of the surrounds for all those attending, eat in to the plaza areas around it, and offer bugger all extra.

Realistically, apart from actual Adelaide Oval events, who would want to stay there when there are better and more central options elsewhere?

Probably most importantly, why is this being funded by the state government? It offers minimal benefit to the vast majority of the population and will probably lessen the appeal of the oval for many.

Where do visiting AFL players (and cricketers) usually stay - that Soviet era looking Incontinental across the river? Would be an epic fail if this new place couldn't attract that business.

Playford on North Terrace.

Here's an idea.

Take that money.

Put it into a purpose built Soccer stadium and or turning Memorial drive into something usable at higher international levels.

Walk up the hill to North Adelaide (in either stupid heat or winter weather) or walk along a busy road to the City....tram is there now tbf.

Unless you are simply wanting to fall out of your room onto the Oval for a game.

During the season you'd imagine the teams would book out half of the rooms anyway. 30 players and at least 10 support staff (before the big wigs join in).

The hotel looks tacky as hell and out of place. I agree that it would ruin the look of Adelaide Oval. Maybe they should instead extend or rebuild the western stand and put a hotel with that stand, that'd be much more reasonable IMO

I am extremely pro development. If it were up to me I'd dig up half the useless parklands. But there's just something extremely smelly about this. Maybe it's my blind hatred for the SMA and their price gouging, maybe it's a feeling that the Oval is now done, leave it alone for a while, maybe cause it looks s**t and it's a stupid concept....dunno, but I hate it.

I think the idea on its own is ok but I agree that it stinks to high heaven. This state government is cutting services left, right and centre, has just called in administrators for the RAH and QEH, and many people are losing their jobs. No mind, the Marshall government is happy to green light this hotel. Reeks of cronyism. It won't be long before offices are secretly added to the plan for a certain state themed AFL club.

When asked about the cost to taxpayers Steve Marshall said, The Oval Authority will pay back the money via stadium admission charges. So the State Government is going to pile 45M of taxpayers money into a hotel no one needs or wants and the Oval patrons will be expected to cover the cost. I would be a bit concerned at that aspect of the deal.

How is this going to be incorporated into the scoreboard area in the Oval? Is the scoreboard going to go? Most people cannot see how this will fit without infringing on the parkland precinct. Surely the north eastern corner means the scoreboard and Moreton Bay figs will go?

This has the smell of a pork barrelling extravagance. Like the right hand tram turn it is something the Government has decided we have to have whether we want it or not.

Its got nothing to do with the scoreboard. It finishes where the NE light tower is, and on the SE side, where the gap between the Eastern and Southern stands starts and the old Victor Richardson gates are.. Look closely at the first 2 photos photos in this thread.

Those pictures do not correspond with the initial media reports that definitely said 'north eastern corner'. That looks more like the eastern façade to me. I am also not sure why anyone would want to stay there? If I had a choice between staying at the AO and in the CBD I would take the CBD every time as it is closer to the action.

I guess the Government has done it's own business feasibility study just as it did with the right hand tram turn. ;)

What do you think the odds are of the scoreboard and fig trees going within a generation to make way for a northern stand.

Like anti-siphoning laws they'll slowly chip away until they get to the point no one cares anymore.

If they had to do a hotel at the ground (personally think it's a shite idea) then probably would make more sense as part of a new northern stand. Could even build the old scoreboard into the design to prove how much they care.

None!

There is an act of parliament that stops it from happening. The government of the day wont get support in the upper house with minor parties having the balance of power in SA for over 40 years. Even when the Liberals smashed Labor in 1993 due to the state bank disaster they only controlled 11 of the 22 Legislative Council seats.

You will have to get about 250 consecutive genuine lock out games at AO ie 10 years+ before you get even close to a movement to change the law.
