This was a truely baffling moment and I’m surprised it hasn’t been picked up wider following the weekend (although in fairness who would watch that game if they didn’t have to).

Todd Marshall is involved in a contest close to Norths goal who are rewarded with HTB.

Marshall goes down in the contest and instantly grabs his ankle and is obviously in reasonable pain. Once he’s up, he is clearly struggling and goes to remove himself from the ground as he can’t put weight on his ankle.

But no, not today. Instead he is called back to stand the mark while he’s hunched over in pain and unable to even stand upright on the mark before he instantly leaves the field and doesn’t return to the game after the goal is kicked.

Considering we’ve seen scenarios where a game has been completely brought to a standstill for a player 100m off the ball experiencing cramp or a shoulder stinger, it’s astounding the lack of common sense for an injured player to be able to remove themself from the field and not be forced to stand the mark.

What’s the threshold? A player is KO and they have to lay on the ground to man the mark? Got a popped shoulder and stand the mark?

Should be getting a lot more scrutiny For their complete lack of awareness and common sense here.

The preference for umpires to constantly use ignorance as opposed to common sense is disturbing.

I notice Steele Sidebottom not standing still when on the mark last weekend, trying to put off a player kicking for goal. Stand rule should be the whole ground imo

That's the bottom rule. Among a very strong field of contenders, this is the worst rule change ever brought in. Absolutely not needed and adds nothing. But takes away a lot.
And instead of scrapping it because it wasn't working and no one wanted it, Dillon decided to tighten up on it this year :straining:
