It is only going to be an issue if the players make it one if we get a repeat of that stupid decision in that game on the weekend. It's not so much the rule - it's overwhelming harshness of the penalty.

The rule is shit and goes against everything you are taught from a very young age about manning the mark. Im not buying it allows the 45 degree kick bullshit Hocking is coming out with. You get back far enough off the Mark you can still hit that target.
It’s lazy from the league. There are many other adjustments you can make to speed up play (htb, incorrect disposal, ruck nomination and third man up for eg)
Manning the mark has never been an issue and like spoiling and tackling it’s a defensive skill.

I agree with you, it is about getting back off the mark enough, but that was our generation and footy has changed. I don't like the rule and think it has been badly constructed - as I said the penalty exceeds the crime by a long way.

However provided the players abide by the Stand edict, I think it is at least worth seeing what transpires.

That said I don't know why they don't trial it in the Community practice matches first, analyse, then assess. I have a huge problem with how clever Hocking appears to think he is that trialling is not necessary.

Am convinced it will only be to our advantage ,a few opponents tried to stifle our weaponary up forward by parking the bus i50 , this rule will only add speed to those entries making it more difficult for opponents to flood back

Do you really think it was a whinge when this was the pre-summary of the article:

You know the new rule is going to be fraught when the CEO has to come out and describe how easy is for him to do it so why not the players - I mean what a glib, useless comment that contributes absolutely nothing to the discussion!

Good and so they should! IF that free kick against Brennan Cox is a tiny example, a microcosm of the stupidity it will promote from the umpires - this could be the most upsetting year of football we will ever see. The Clubs will know it, Hocking is clearly oblivious.

The rules of the game are a fine balance between supporting the efforts of attack and defense. Yes we want to see more attacking football, and to some extent hooray to the teams like Richmond who have managed to undo the clamps that Sydney Swans applied to the game not too many years ago (Richmond Sydney and others).

The other comment I would make at this early stage - will the umpires attempt to call play on better and quicker to even the playing field? They had better, because a player standing rooted to the ground, on the mark, having to watch a player scoot off many metres is not going to be a great look for the game in my view. Will it be a fair balance - that is what I am waiting to see. What of Buddy's so called natural kicking arc? Does it become an unfair advantage to others if by using it, and then he plays on while the opponent is rooted to the ground, on the mark?

I gotta say philosophically why should you be able to move laterally , the marks the mark , not 10yards left or right , if it means favouring hitting up dusty jack or lynch one out more often , who am I to argue

'The Mark' is more a historical thing, when the game was massively more kick and mark. The game evolved with much more handball and play on style which is what caused the sideways movement of course. The standing the mark is taking it back in time, but the evener is that the umpires, tonight at least, called play on much more quickly, evening the playing field more on this Stand rule.

I'm not sure we will be any more advantaged than anyone else - it's the disadvantage that worries me if we start to get an increase in 50m penalties as umpires relax and we get more varied interpretations over time. For now at least, it looks a useful change if scoring is the main criteria on which to judge it. It never is though, there are always domino effects.

Often players on the mark move sideways with the player in possession themselves, which most often happens near the boundary line as players who take marks there are given leniency by umpires to move infield a few metres... hopefully these things are OK for a player on the mark to move sideways, but I can see it stooge-ing the man on the mark when the umpires have already given the player who marked it a few metres advantage...

Yep. And there were at least 3 or 4 other occasions where the same thing happened but no 50m.

That adds up to us being selectively treated next week v Scumton and copping an absolute one way reaming. Book it in. Its that time of the year again.

We shouldn’t get more 50m than anyone else , it’s pretty simple instruction , haven’t they ever played simon says ,,,, freeze,, I loved that game
