Taking away whether you think it’s a good rule or not, there are 2 major issues with the stand rule:

1. It was introduced with basically zero testing.
2. It’s a fundamental change to the way the game is played.

It’s like seeing cricket scores diminish and players struggle to score freely, so a cricket
administrator decides to extend the pitch by 1-metre for an ashes series - with no testing. Or there are too many aces or unplayable serves in tennis so they take away the second serve … on a whim.

Sure, it might result in more entertaining batting or more rallies in tennis, but it’s an absolutely fundamental change to the actual sport and should not be made lightly.

So I’m all for testing potential rule changes and making smart decisions around improving the game and so on. But we simply MUST introduce a process of checks and balances that NEVER EVER allows a single administrator to introduce a rule, have it ticked off, then approved all in a single off-season. It’s embarrassing and can threaten the things that make our game great.

*ps … the ridiculous sub-rule was introduced on a whim the day before the season started as well FFS … how on earth can that happen !!!!

One of the worst rules ever introduced and all because Shocking didn't like how Richmond stood the mark.

And to be penalized 50m for not going over the mark is a disgrace.
shocking does not introduce this rule if geelol won the 2020 grand final

great thread idea for the main board "does steve hocking introduce the stand rule if geelong won the 2020 grand final?"

The rule makes me want to projectile vomit.

It looks even worse at local level footy because the man on the mark often isn’t fast or fit enough to even bother trying to chase after play-on has been called. So they just let the attacker stroll past and are totally removed from the play.

It will 100% be gone at some stage. It’s completely imbecilic.
Yep. Giant * on Geelong's flag for sure.

main board mods edited my thread to remove the part about Hocking melting over Cotchin manning the mark too well even though it's a fact 😂😂

That's my biggest criticism of the whole shemozzle, that games have been decided by by the application of the rule and it's over the top penalty. That will be the curse on Steve Hocking for the rest of his life.

they look worse continuing to shove it down our throats

Have no doubt it has contributed to the discontent that we have seen some flow through to viewing and attendance numbers, but the worst might still be yet to come. I'm just about over it - watched fewer games and attended none in 2022. It is not enjoyable to watch a lot of the time and even less so to listen to.

The protected zone is a valuable addition, but the degree of the penalty is too harsh. The Ruck nomination slows the game and adds to the stoppage numbers and should be tweaked.

Now we hear we are going to have 5 interchange, this was always on the cards when they added the extra player supposedly for injury substitution. The AFL seemed to cave in the coaches incredibly quickly on that on and will speed up the game and may be counterintuitive to the reducing of rotation numbers we saw in recent years.

Steve Hocking has been a pox on the game! Would love to tell him face to face some day!

yeah reckon the rfc and afl have lost shitload of potential $$$ from Richmond fans in the same boat not attending

I haven't been since the 2019 grand final and won't be returning unless the stand rule is removed and there are thousands of rfc fans in the same boat .oppo fans can deny all they like but our club and our people know we were targeted by shocking and the afl

I'm not going to say SHocking wasn't influenced, but I can't buy the whole Richmond was targeted thing - we've been affected the most possibly due to the game style Dimma, Trent and team initiated, however other teams have still recognised some chaos in the forward line can be a good thing, when dealing with plus one's, flooding and the like. Our game style was the future and for the most part it did not suit teams with older lists.

Did Shocking have Richmond specifically in mind? I can't stand the stupidity of the man, but even I won't go there. No this was all about what he considered leaving a legacy - you can't tell me there was not progression discussion about SHocking coming back as CEO of Geelong. That was all too coincidental. His so-called legacy was just too ill-conceived and RUSHED. That's what selfish people do.

If ever a period of footy deserves an asterix, it is post 2020, not just for Covid, but for the ill-conceived and untried rules having ultimately a negative affect on the game - we shall see what time considers.

I agree the penalty is over the top but the worst part is the uneven application of the rules. Sometimes the umpires will allow the player with the ball to walk back and move 5 or 10 metres sideways and still not call play on. The player on the mark is completely isolated It will be interesting to see how the coaches counter this rubbish rule
