Strip him of the captaincy permenatly and whatever ban he cops, when it’s done he comes back like any other player.

Can’t excuse cheating but it’s a game at the end of the day, shouldn’t have people out there calling for his head or anything, far more serious matters in the world.

Been done before by many cricket nations, looks bad and I agree a shit feeling as an Australian because this will linger for years, but it won’t be the last time this happens either.

We aren't South Africa.
We aren't Pakistan.
We aren't England.

We have standards and integrity. Ask Greg Chappell, 35 years after the underarm incident and it still leaves a stain on his legacy. As it should.

Steve Smith and David Warner should be punished and made examples of for future players and leaders of our National team. They blatantly disregarded 140+ years of Australia Cricket History with this disgusting act of cheating and should never been seen on the cricket again, and should never be heard in a commentary box either. They should no longer be allowed to have any association with Australian Cricket ever again.
With all due respect, this is sanctimonious drivel and a massive over reaction.

It's very galling listening to Vaughan talk critically about ball tampering when that is PRECISELY what he directed his team to do in 2005. He is a campaigner of the highest order; given his history, he should have the self awareness to shut up about it.

Yep. A lot of English ball-tampering hypocrites wandering out of the woodwork this morning. Some of the same people who talk about mints or dirt in the pocket or professional 12th Men as being an "edge" in The Ashes are now suddenly interested in the spirit of cricket. A lot of howling from India as well - the home of corruption full stop.

Nothing from Pakistan, though. They were last seen experimenting with yellow tape to see if it worked better.

This. I'm not interested in the background of the critics in the slightest. I'm disgusted regardless of what they have to say.

Double this.

'But everyone else is doing it' is the last resort of a shit bloke who has been caught doing something indefensible. And it's about as cowardly and pathetic as the actual offense itself

I don't think you have to be particularly sanctimonious or holier than thou to not want your national team to engage in organized cheating under the direction of their captain.

I think you can hold both opinions though - that Australia's cheating is a disgrace, and that the ICC discipline process has been weak as piss for some time.

Sure has. If you don't have priors it's basically a warning and 5 runs for the opposition. So not much downside and look at the potential upside - ripping through their batting order with reverse swing.

Personally I think it is a gross under reaction. If the death penalty was still an option in Australia I'd be calling for it.:)

I don't give a rats tush what other countries have done with their cricketing cheats, this is Australia, and unlike those other countries we have standards that we have been able maintain for over 140 years, and in one disgraceful act they have tarnished us and our legacy forever. **** 'em. Banish them to Manus Island for all I care, they don't deserve to wear the baggie green ever again. They don't deserve to be Australian Cricketers.

We need to make sure this doesn't happen again, the harshest penalty must be applied, and that is a lifetime ban.

This is all just getting ridiculous now. Its not good but as has been said, ball tampering has been going on forever by teams everywhere - big deal.

Blokes didnt wear Brylcreem in their hair in the 50's and 60's just to look good.

You know, I have a new found respect for Smith now. Good on him for coming out and saying yes we ball tampered. Every team does it, so as the International Board why don't you do something about it. He'll cop the stick as long as something gets done about it.
It's like sledging. Everyone team does it so why does everyone get their panties in a twist when the Aussies are the best at doing it. Do something about it or shut up.

Think there has been a massive over reaction and a lot of blokes throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Plenty of other countries have been involved with ball tampering incidents and their players have continued playing. The PC Police need to chill out. So who is with me?

Not much of a cricket watcher then? ;)
Actually I've been a player, coach, umpire and administrator at various times for over 40 years. I grew up watching cricket when Ian Chappell was our captain and when the West Indies were just starting to become the superpower. I may have rose coloured glasses on when it comes to the golden era of the seventies and eighties, but I certainly don't remember anything like this happening when the Chappell's where Captain, other than the underarm incident, and at the time that wasn't against the laws of the game.

Bit the same as me. Its a shame but its reality. As I posted earlier players in the 50's and 60's didn't wear Brylcreem for their looks. My grandfather played in the 30's and 40's and used to give me a sly wink and imply that they had got up to some "sharp practices" back then

I would have thought Lillee and Marsh betting against their own side in 1981 was about 1000x worse then this.

I really really want someone to bring this up in Question Time. That would almost be peak Aussie.
If Ben Simmons being snubbed for the All Star team got mentioned, You can guarantee it will be. Everyone will be falling over themselves to be more disappointed than everyone else. And then some Right wing nut job will trump them all by arguing the other side.
