Shit culture problems started long before Clarke. It goes back way, way further.Clarke created a sh1t culture within the team. If you weren't his mate you got left behind. Katich anyone?
This has continued on with Smith. if he doesn't like you you're gone. See Maxwell. I am still staggered how Renshaw got dropped. Kid is the future.
Follow that with Warner as VC...............

Walters, or Kim Hughes?I call Marsh and Lillee white-anting Doug Walters as the start.
hear hear
He'll learn from this but he has to cop what's coming on the chin.
Coming out and admitting the issue took strength and courage which was pleasing to see.
Walters, or Kim Hughes?
Makes sense. When you said Walters I was thinking there must be some anecdote or story that I'd not heard!Hughes. Apologies, seniors moment.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...is-a-and-claims-innocence-over-ball-tamperinglol what else was he gonna do? ignore the video evidence?
No but you don't understand: with Faf it was spur of the moment decision he just happened to find the mint in his mouth (convenient really!) and completely forgot it was there while shining the ball. Much like he was just trying to shine the rough side of the ball on his cricket whites until that pesky zipper got in the way! It's the exact same thing. Knowingly altering the condition of the ball in a way they believe will positively influence the game for them.
Not to mention those shoulder saving 40m returns to the keeper via the square turf.No but you don't understand: with Faf it was spur of the moment decision he just happened to find the mint in his mouth (convenient really!) and completely forgot it was there while shining the ball. I'm surprised Smith didn't open the press conference with "I'm shocked to be sitting here!"
Blaming NSW for this is almost peak bigfooty. How much of the cultural problem is the NSW thing?
When did Lyon change from SA to NSW, and when did he start carrying on like a twat?

I think this is part of the issue.
Up until around the end of the Ponting/Warne/Gilchrist era there was tremendous affection and goodwill for the Australian team which meant fans would forgive or ignore a lot, particular if it was from the problem children that every team has.
That's been rapidly eroded partly because the team isn't winning as much and partly because the current team has a high proportion of A grade w***ers, including in 'leadership positions'. Which is the main issue- plenty of Australian cricketers have behaved badly over the years, but the captain is the person who is supposed to be reining them in, not in it up to his eyeballs.
Frankly the public has had enough of the Davey Warner brand of self-entitled, thin-skinned, underperforming peanuts masquerading as on and off field leaders. They've reached a point where there is no underlying goodwill there, hence the uncompromising reaction and now they've been caught doing something which is plainly wrong.

Steve Waugh's like the John Howard of cricket, looked great at the time but has left a shithouse legacy.Yep. This is just the straw that broke the camel's back.
I think some of the behavioral issues started under Steve Waugh's captaincy. On field banter made way for "mental disintegration". We were so good at cricket it didn't matter though. You don't hear much from Steve these days though.
Then there was that uncomfortable period where we were ok but not great, even a bit shit at times. But it was the same time that CA decided that the players were also actors and had them in a cringeworthily high number of stupid as on tv. It made those players a bit less likeable, and it wasn't their fault. They were not given the opportunity to develop as players before being given too much limelight.
And of late it's been the ch 9 commentators making it all about themselves again, rather than letting the players develop and become likeable. Richie and co had some class, the current mob are just a bunch of yobbos who think it's a sportsmen's night and a chance to tell us again how good they were.
CA needs the team to perform well, no doubt. But I reckon it's got to the point where Australia would be happy with lesser results for a little while if it meant the team were likeable.
