i reckon stant's acceleration in the middle will be invaluable this year. if jj and watto can dish the ball out to him he will have a great year in the centre.

Did you see his Bullet 50m pass to Lucas in the opening seconds of the game against us?

Stants' highly criticised disposal is improving greatly.

Very dangerous running directly through the guts and kicking long. Its his bread and butter.

well said fiery.
it seems as if the players are told to give the ball to him every opportunity they get. this is a sign that the coaches have confidence in his disposal and decision making. stants will get alot of handballs by running behind the man with the ball this year.

Well as far as Super Coach goes be very carefull who you pick. With the different scoring system they use the clangers really hurt.
On the other hand Dream Team doesnt worry about turnovers so all you have to worry about is blokes who get the footy.

super coach is open not to sure bout dream team

Really
All i was saying is you can tell when one or the other open because of the questions from supporters of other clubs start asking questions. If you noticed i said "Super Coach or Dream team" ;)

If we were talking dreamteam, then I would hesitate on Monfries. Although a great price, I'm not sure he's got a full season of high quality just yet. Still very young, might fade off a little. But then again, that's what the trades are for.

Mr JJ Johnson for me

who cares about dreamteam. it seems as if monfries has come on leaps and bounds from last season

Stanton is an interesting one.

Can he play anywhere other than wing?

I have my doubts. I can't see him starting in the middle and extracting the ball or reading it of packs and scrimages.

I think he'll be one of those great wingman but in terms of best midfielder I am not so sure.

He's a wingman?

3rd leading clearance player at the club in 2006.

I believe young Brent will hit a new high this year and improve to the point of him being our most important weapon in ball-ups (clearences).

I watched him like a hawk for ages at one stage against WC and I was so impressed with the very quick hands. He moves very smoothly and just runs all day. He's got a fantasic drop punt action on him and the days of him miss kicking alot about to end i think. I've been watching the red and black jumper for 28 years now and I just know when a player is moving into that age where they just hit their straps and start making a name for themselves.

Is that right?

Geez, I don't think I've ever seen him clear the ball. I guess he goes unnoticed a fair bit.

All that comes to mind is him running into space to receive.

I'm still a bit sceptical about him playing on ball though. I've never seen him start in the middle.

i wouldn't be surprised one bit if he had the most centre clearances for us this year. he showed some really, really goods in the west coast match. could he turn into a Ben Cousins type player?????

Comparing players with star potential to players that are already stars is a hazardous process. However, I am going to delve in to it.

Can Stanton become a Ben Cousins type player? My answer is no even though I would love to be proven wrong. Stanton is not slow but doesn't have the explosive bursts that Ben Cousins has. On top of this, he's not really a golakicking midfielder like Cousins. I would rather compare the potential of Stanton to a player like Simon Black. Black doesn't have explosive pace, but isn't slow. Black is strong in the contested contest but is also a good running past option. On top of this, Black has ever reliable skills. Such charcteristics are very much like Stanton.

A player who's potential I would compare with Ben Cousins is Angus Monfries. He, like Cousins, started in the forward pocket and even now that he is playing midfield, he can still come up with a goal. Also similar to Cousins, he is ultra courageous for a small player. He has good pace in spurts and can get his hands on the ball a fair bit. Finally, Monfries has a bit of fire about him which is a lot like Cousins and look no further than his two goals from the pocket against Carlton for an example of such fire.

I'm certainly not saying that Satnton's going to be the next Simon Black or Monfries the next Ben Cousins but I think there are some similarities.

I don't think that is right:confused: ..not according to my end of year 2006 Bomber magazine which has the top 5 clearances as......

Jobe-102

JJ-74

Hille-69

Pev-48

and Heffernan on 39

Longy?..where did u get your Stanton stat from?

i know that i'm getting ahead of myself, but for some reason i have always thought of stanton turning into cousins and angus reminds of a young daniel kerr. although gus spends a fair bit of time in the forward line, ultimately we drafted him as a midfielder. his attack on the ball always reminds of kerr.

the reason i see similarities of cousins in stanton is because they both run all day long. stanton also has a penetrating kick, this is cousins' trademark. i also believe that stants has the same body type as cousins had when he was young.

i know that i'm dreaming but who knows.......

But interesting to note, that he was 1st for handball receives by a massive margin.

Stanton had 208 handball receives with Welsh a distant 2nd on 155!

"I create the space,now I'm a receiver"...nothing wrong with that though...:p

I'm guessing the stats in the Essendon year book would be Champion Data stats, they have different definitions to Prowess.

I'm stand to be corrected but I reckon he started in the centre a lot in the second half of last season.

GoDons - As for the Ben Cousins comparison, I reckon Cousins kicks a lot of his goals when he goes forward, not when he's actually in the midfield. Stanton does have explosive pace, Cousins is a lot more powerful though. I wouldn't compare Stanton to Black either, Black is more of an in-close player. He's a brilliant mover and great by hand.

I find it hard to compare Stanton to anyone, maybe Rama?

people forget how good rama was at his best. hopefully he gets to play some games for bendigo this year.

Perhaps Shane Crawford is a comparison that strikes me. In fact, Id go as far as saying Stanton is far more ahead in comparison to Crawford at the same stage of his career.

Yeah I was clutching at straws with the Stanton/Black comparison. I think there's just a bit of similarity in the way they move. As for the pace issue, Stanton is definately quick but wouldn't have the pace over 5m like Ben Cousins. Then again, you may be right and it might just be the power of Cousins that makes him look faster. I have to argue that Cousins does kick goals from the midfield because the closest Cousins gets to playing forward is playing on a HFF and pushing up the ground a fair distance. The Rama comparison isn't bad but it's hard to say as my memories of Rama playing so damagingly are not as fresh in my mind as they once were. Perhaps Stanton is a bit more of an inside player than Rama was.
