'Star Wars: Episode IX' May Feature an Even Greater Threat Than the Sith

By Jake Kleinman 6h ago

Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to focus on an epic battle between Light and Dark — symbolized by Rey and Kylo Ren — that could finally put an end to the struggle we’ve seen play out over the past eight movies (10 if you count Rogue One and Solo). But what if there’s an even greater threat in the galaxy that forces The Resistance and the First order to unite rather than simply destroy each other?

That’s what a new Episode IX theory argues, citing the recently published, canonical Star Wars book Thrawn: Alliances as evidence. In the book, we learn that an alien race called the Grysk could be that greater threat.

Here’s a quote from the book describing the Grysk (via redditor u/herplexed1467):

Grysks are a species living somewhere in the Unknown Regions. Creatures half of myth, whom few have ever seen. It is said that they are nomads, with no fixed home, traveling in spacecraft so numerous they blot out the stars. They are said to be terrifying warriors, overwhelming their opponents by sheer numbers and ferocity.
Sounds pretty scary, but could the Grysk actually show up in Star Wars: Episode IX? It would be a pretty huge twist, but u/herplexed1467 points out that it could also help resolve the current trilogy, set up the future of the franchise, and answer one of the biggest mysteries from the recent films all at once.

“I believe that this threat will be introduced in Episode IX, forcing The First Order and The Resistance to unite to combat it,” they write. “It would also open the door for a new trilogy of movies showcasing our new heroes against this greater threat. Perhaps it is revealed that Snoke was of this new race of aliens.”

More importantly, it would give Kylo and Rey another reason to team up, which would mean more of the goodness in the throne room battle sequence.

The problem? It might be too big of twist, overcomplicating what should be a movie meant to provide some closure on the Skywalker saga. As Reddit commenters quickly pointed out, it seems pretty unlikely that the Grysk will play a major role in Episode IX, though it’s possible they could show up in an animated or live-action Star Wars series. Better yet, maybe these “terrifying aliens” will play a central role in future Star Wars movies already in the works from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson or Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Either way, you probably shouldn’t expect to say some totally new army of aliens turn up in Star Wars: Episode IX, but if it does happen, remember that you heard it here first.

'Star Wars: Episode 9' Seen As 'Underdog' To 'Rule' Next Holiday Season

It appears to be a make or break situation for Disney and Lucasfilm with “Star Wars: Episode 9.” The franchise was supposed to be a big hit after the success of “The Force Awakens.” However, after the backlash with “The Last Jedi” and the Box Office failure of “Solo,” the franchise may find itself in deep trouble if the next film bombs.

It was unimaginable to think just a few years ago that the stakes would be so high for “Star Wars: Episode 9.” A report by Forbes suggested that the film is seen as a bit of an “underdog” compared to movies like “Avengers: Endgame” and “The Lion King,” both of which are expected to be huge hits.

Despite the “underdog” status, the upcoming “Star Wars” film is set to be the biggest moneymaker in the next holiday season. No matter whether the film makes all its money back or most of the money back, the competition from “Jumanji 3” and “Cats” is not expected come anywhere near the numbers that the JJ Abrams' film will make.

With Abrams back at the helm, expectations are huge for “Star Wars: Episode 9.” A report by Screen Rant noted that this may be the biggest year yet for the franchise. One thing the upcoming film has going for it is time. There will be a long gap of about 19 months since the release of “The Last Jedi” by the time the next movies is released. Add to this the fact that this is the last film in the new trilogy that is expected to complete the story by answering all the questions that have been raised. There is bound to be enough interest in movie goers to head into the theaters.

The upcoming film is not expected to set a new record in Box Office collection, but it is expected to surpass the $620.1 million that “The Last Jedi” made. “The Force Awakens” made $936.7 million, which will be a tough number to beat.

There is a lot of optimism about “Star Wars: Episode 9,” as it appears in all the lists of the most highly anticipated movies of 2019. In the list compiled by IGN, the film appears last. The report notes that Abrams will have to consider whether he will give a fresh take to old stories or take a fresh approach.

“Star Wars: Episode 9” will be released on Dec. 20 in the U.S.

I highly doubt a literary creation is going to make it into a saga movie in any meaningful way (Thrawn, the Grysk etc). I read an article that proposed a Thrawn TV series to appease old fans and draw in new ones, that seems more of a possibility.

So basically, New Jedi Order and the YV.

Rumored titles for EP9 include....Son of Darkness......Knights of Ren

I feel that the title for episode 9 should be more of a concluding theme to the whole skywalker saga. Son of Darkness and Knights of Ren are more specific and not broad concluding titles.

Knights of Ren are a joke anyway. Where have they been this entire time? Finger bashing each other?

oh dear lord, new rumor that old footage of "Han" from TFA will be used in ep9, as a flashback scene maybe, or another theory, as time travel

as someone commented....

"It's too late for reunions, Carrie Fisher is dead. Star Wars is too far gone for JJ Abrams, or anyone else, to fix with flashbacks and CGI. Just make sure Rey dies and I'll be appreciative."
