So how did Luke survive and the entire squadron bar 1 or 2 get wiped out.
With no training?

If you watch the film you'll notice several instances of Luke almost being killed until Biggs or wedge shoot ties off his tail.

You'll also notice in the trench runs that wing mates buy each other time by blocking the line of sight for the ties, as Biggs and Wedge do for Luke.

You'll also notice Vader being about to kill Luke until han saves him.

And yet still survives.

Rey, with others on board the Falcon, no other friendly help: Survives, no help necessary.

Star Wars: Luke and Han take out 4 TIES between them that maybe let them get away and weren't instructed to destroy them.
The Last Jedi: Rey takes out 3 TIES on her own with the entire fleet after them trying to kill them.

I literally typed out that he survived because better pilots continually protected him, and you then asked how he survived.

Pretty straight forward really

Plenty of trained battle hardened pilots wiped out.
The rookie who had never flown into battle or in anything other than a speeder not only survives but wins the day.

But yeah he wasnt over powered at all.

As said though they fixed allot of it in empire.

He flew in a fighter ship at home in which he shot womp rats and did runs in beggars canyon. Biggs personally vouched for his flying ability to let him go up with them.
