So, we have a thread each for the new Star Wars films, a thread for the TV shows, even an old thread about Return of the Jedi that was bumped from the dead, but no thread for dedicated discussion about the original trilogy, so here one is.

Started watching Star Wars tonight (side note, first time I've actually watched the movie on home media for about 4 years, for a fanatic I really don't view them regularly), I'm impressed at a few things I previously dismissed as weak points.

The pacing is good, Mark Hamill's acting is up to scratch, the writing is good all across the board. A few things did seem a little cheap and caused a chuckle, Ben wandering over the rise, stumbling everywhere and waving his arms like an old drunk. Also did he make the screeching noise beforehand that scared off the Tusken Raiders?

Owen and Beru, I hated how they became afterthought characters in the prequels, in this they are much stronger, albeit with little screentime. Owen's line "Ben died around the same time as your father" makes no sense though, since if that was the case, how does Luke know about him? Speaking of, Ben calls Luke by his name, before they introduce themselves, and Luke doesn't react... well... like most people would when an old man knows them for no reason.

Vader's line about telling the Imperial Senate that Tantive IV had an accident and all aboard died, they made a nice reference to that in R1 with Vader again hatching a conspiracy to the Senate.

That's all I can think of for now. I open the floor to the people.

As I said in the R1 thread or somewhere....

His name should be Luke Lars, not Luke Skywalker. As Leia's name was Leia Organa. To hide the children from the father and others. Then it makes zero sense that Luke would go by the name of Luke Skywalker. He would've been raised from birth by the Lars family, so would've/should've always been referred to and known everywhere on his planet, as Luke Lars.

Owen is talking about 'Obi Wan Kenobi' and trying to convince Luke he's a different person from Ben. Luke asks Owen after that line ' He knew my father?' Like his father's past was mostly a mystery still.

Luke and Ben are neighbors so clearly they have crossed paths before which is why their meeting isn't as complete strangers. Actually thinking about it, Ben's first words to Luke are 'Rest easy now, son' and its Luke who recognises him as Ben Kenobi.

No one knew, at least initially, that Anakin was still alive. The Lars were always Uncle and Aunt so weren't pretending to be his parents. Who knows what traditions Tatooine has with adopted children, maybe they keep the birth name. Since Anakins mother lived on Tatooine there could even be a few Skywalkers floating around.

Luke Lars...Jar Jar likes.

A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are quite good.

Return of the Jedi would've been quietly forgotten decades ago if it wasn't a Star Wars movie.
Agreed but the Luke v Vader fight at the end of ROTJ is still my favourite scene in any Star Wars though.

I find it very cumbersome, up until the end when Luke snaps. Everything before that is poor choreography interrupted by seemingly endless talking parts. Also it takes forever to start... Because more talking.

I guess I just liked how Luke was presented with the same opportunity that Anakin was but he chose not to take it.

First saw ANH and Empire back to back at the cinema in 1980, to say a huge part of mine and my brothers childhood was Star Wars is an understatement.

Favourite scene out of all of them and probably my favourite scene from any film is when Yoda lift's the X-Wing. I love everything about it, what it represented in the film, the music, the way it's shot. As someone else mentioned, the Vader/Luke scene at the end of ROTJ is epic. I also love the Carbonite chamber scene.

You can't criticise the original trilogy if the story lines don't match up perfectly with the prequels. That's the fault of the prequels. The plot for the original trilogy is near perfect and one of a few reasons they were so successful. Of course there are awesome characters, acting, effects etc plus the mystery and spirit of the 'force'.

I am a Star Wars nerd but I don't bother with all that stuff. There's a 50 page thread on another forum about the Vader hall scene from Rogue One, dissecting it. **** that, just enjoy the films.

The interaction between Han and Luke is great, it is such a shame they spend the next couple of movies barely with each other.

I have the get out the VHS and watch the original version again, find out exactly how nuanced the special editions. A lot of scenes just aren't adding up. There's one scene with Vader and Tarkin, where Vader finishes talking, then starts waving his hand around, as if he was still talking, then Tarkin starts speaking. It's weird.

It makes sense when you understand the story is astrological based
The Skywalker walks between 'houses'

But the talking leads to Vaders 'sister ' comment.

Nekminit boom shakalaka Luke goes off

I bought a double DVD of Star Wars about ten years ago and it had the first and last versions of the movie. One was called 'the original theatrical release' it is great and raw. The other is the last updated version and the remastered film is great but the extra aliens and Han 'shooting second!' are definitely not improvements. The version in between would be better. But I'm still disappointed I didn't also buy the 'Empire' and 'Jedi' then so I could have their original theatrical releases too. Hopefully they will be available again.
