Movie Star Wars Original Trilogy

I bought a double DVD of Star Wars about ten years ago and it had the first and last versions of the movie. One was called 'the original theatrical release' it is great and raw. The other is the last updated version and the remastered film is great but the extra aliens and Han 'shooting second!' are definitely not improvements. The version in between would be better. But I'm still disappointed I didn't also buy the 'Empire' and 'Jedi' then so I could have their original theatrical releases too. Hopefully they will be available again.

As well as some original tapes from the 80s, I have remastered VHS tapes that were released before the Special Editions, I'll have to watch them as well. They might be the way to go.

The problem with that release was the widescreen ported into 4:3 due to it being a laserdisc source, so its very pixelated on a big screen. And even if you use the zoom in function the subtitles are off picture so can't be read. It was released to combat the laserdisc sourced illegal downloads at the time and they made sure to do as little as they could.

There are very good HD quality copies 'out there' which have been extremely well done to recreate the original films in HD and they will have to do until whatever moratorium Lucas has with Disney expires.

Rights to the OT belong with 20th Century Fox, not Disney.

Sent from mTalk

20th Century own the original film but not its two sequels. 20th Century have distribution rights for those two until 2020something.

There would still be conditions by Lucas regarding releasing the original theatre films otherwise they would have done it already.

Kind of stupid really considering Disney brought the Star Wars for 4.2 Billion. 20th Century's contract should be null and void.

I'm thinking they'll release the OT unaltered before they lose distribution rights to the sequels for a big payday.

Next year will the 40 year anniversary of Star Wars and Disney will want to cash in and can't because 20th Century own the distribution rights of ANH.

Going to interesting how Disney and 20th Century will handle it.

20th Century know they're sitting on a gold mine, nothing will move them, except perhaps a sale with terms similar to the Lucasfilm one, that involves significant shareholder stakes.

There is something about that 20th Century that feels right when watching Star Wars, it goes well with the green Lucasarts logo and then the 'A long time ago...'

Finally finished watching Star Wars. What a ****ing masterpiece. A few comments from the final scene:

Where did Han get his collared shirt from for the medal ceremony?

Is this the most underrated piece of Star Wars outfits?

That's not how preexisting business agreements work. When a company takes over another all agreement still in place need to be honoured unless successfully negotiated. Its not in 20th Century's best interests to sell them back cheap.

They may not be able to release the unaltered anymore for Empire and Jedi without Lucasfilm permission, and there may be conditions attached with releasing the original Star Wars, dating back to when Lucas released the original Special Editions into theatres through 20th Century. Whatever the case something is holding it up, similar to why it took so long for some TV shows to be released on DVD/Blu ray.

As I said in the R1 thread or somewhere....

His name should be Luke Lars, not Luke Skywalker. As Leia's name was Leia Organa. To hide the children from the father and others. Then it makes zero sense that Luke would go by the name of Luke Skywalker. He would've been raised from birth by the Lars family, so would've/should've always been referred to and known everywhere on his planet, as Luke Lars.
well there is 2 explanations for this the real one was that originally luke wasn't actually going to be vaders kids because anakin and vader were different characters. until he changed his mind when writing empire. so having skywalker as his name didn't matter it was just a surname like any other. also the reason leia is organa is because when writing this she was just bails daughter and not related to luke at all hence the incest kiss scene

actual in universe explanation tatooine is a backwards planet with no imperial presence at all so wouldn't matter what your name is nothing would reach back to the empire. also the fact when this was made luke had nothing to do with vader other then being the son of one of obi wan's former apprentices. also if i remember correctly this movie states anakin was a moisture farmer before obi wan dragged him off to be a jedi and the clone wars.

so basically it all boils down to lucas changing his mind and story elements throughout the saga

the ewoks hurt the return of the jedi big time. but as for individual scenes it gives us some of the most iconic of the franchise luke in jet black with the green saber. the confrontation on jabba's sail barge. the best space battle in the saga other then rogue one. then the whole perfection on the death star between luke/vader/emperor

I sometimes don't get the lack of love for 'Jedi'. It has some daggy moments early, but builds and builds to an epic finale. I love the scene where both in hand cuffs Luke runs into Han after some time and Han asks "How are we going?" and Luke answers "same as usual!" and Han says "oh that bad!" or something like that, GOLD. Some real powerful scenes and interesting fight and battle scenes. Three different locations at once and all as important to the victory as each other. Such a great, moving and even redeeming finish to the saga where so many threads were tied off and Annikin is redeemed, victory is achieved every one is heroic from Lando to C3PO to Ewoks and by finally confronting and defeating Vader and the Emperor, Luke becomes a Jedi and a Jedi has returned to the galaxy.

That said it gave us one of the worst memes ever. :p

Leia was officially adopted as a daughter of the Organa family. That's why she refers to Bail Organa as "father'.

Luke, however, was never adopted as a son of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, so he went by the name of his grandmother, Shmi Skywalker. He was an orphan simply being raised by his extended family.
