The banter between Leia and Han in Empire is first class.

I'd sooner kiss a wookie.
I can arrange that. You could use a good kiss.

Watch this.
Watch what?

You stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking Nerf herder.
Whose scruffy looking?

Don't get excited.
Being held by you isn't enough to get me excited.
Sorry sweetheart I haven't got time for anything else.

I think you just can't bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your sight.
I don't know where you get your delusions, laser brain.
Laugh it up, fuzzball.

No time to discuss this as a committee.
I am not a committee!

And of course who could forget...

I love you.
I know.

Watched VHS pre-special editions ROTJ today.

I've been harsh on that movie. It's a damn good movie. I still feel it was an underwhelming way to wrap the trilogy up, but the start with the Jabba stuff, then the Ewoks at the end, and the talkathon lightsabre battle are better than I remember. I can still remember all the Ewok catchphrases. I should have posted earlier, as there were some more points and nuances I noticed and wanted to raise, but I've forgotten now.

Tomorrow or Wednesday, I do Empire Strikes Back, probably on DVD or Blu-ray, the only movie to benefit from the tinkering and get a little better, not that it could be improved anyway.

'Would somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way?'

As someone who is old enough to have seen all of the movies on release at the cinema, I just thought about this line yesterday after sitting through the 3 original movies with my 10 year old daughter over 2 days.

Did they even have carpet in any of the movies? How would Leia have known to call Chewy carpet? Can anyone point out to me any scene in any of the movies where there is even a square of carpet in it?

Prequels did with scenes on Coruscant at least. Original Trilogy.... can't think of one scene!

There may be one in the Adults only blu ray version, Brazil didnt exist in the originals.

No such thing as unaltered HD OT. The moment you start cleaning up the special effects sequences, it is altered. A proper HD OT would make the special effects of the time, like the green screening, blue screening, and rotoscoping, even more pronounced.

There are HD copies of the original movies online taken from 35mm reels.

Have to disagree.

The changes made to empire are what I find the most frustrating. While they are minimal they are completely unnecessary and jarring. I hate the additional Wampa footage. Not only is it inconsistent with the design of the original creature (which is also included in the final cut) but it minimises the tension of the original scene. Like in Jaws, the monster is scariest when you don't see it.

I hate, hate the the changed dialogue from Vader as he is leaving cloud city. The original "Bring my shuttle!" was excellent, full of menace and just oozed Vader. The new line "Alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival" has nowhere near the same effect. The dialogue seems to have been literally phoned in (as in they recorded James Earl Jones delivering the line over the telephone)
and seems to have been inserted solely to include what is my biggest gripe with this cut of the film ... namely, the inclusion of Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin. I still have no idea why it was included. Just an extra thing to add to make people come and see the movie when it was rereleased. It completely ruins the pacing and tension by cutting back and forth between the falcon trying to flee the planet and Vaders shuttle arcing gracefully back to his command ship, slowly docking, Vader walking down the ramp... (not to mention the reused footage from Jedi). It's just appalling.

As I said, they are hamfisted, unnecessary editions to an almost perfect Star Wars movie and are what make me most frustrated with these final cuts of the OT.

Not a devoted Star Wars fan, I understand the point of view people have about wanting the unaltered versions to be re-released (did find it amusing that they technically got their wish in the mid/late 00's when they were included on a secondary disc in another reprinting of the OT on dvd... only people were not happy because it was not in widescreen or something).

The only thing that I find annoying about the "changes" made over the years (particularly for the blu-ray "complete saga" release) was changing old Anakin for young Anakin at the end of ROTJ. Oh and adding the Darth Vader noooooooooooooooooooooo when tossing the Emperor to his death/impending doom.

Can anyone explain to me what the heck the noise is when Obi Wan rescues Luke from the sandpeople. Watched ANH on the weekend and was like, wtf

For the life of me I can't remember what noise was made in the originals but it definitely wasn't this. Almost sounds demonic...

I disagree with all of that. Well not so much the first point, I'm indifferent to that. I may articulate why later when I'm on pc with a proper keyboard.

That's true and the original, original print of Star Wars as it appeared on screens on 25 May 1977 was edited down further so that what was shown a year later on the same screens was a slightly different cut of the film. Lucas has been making changes to Star Wars 1973. Essentially however, after they were released to cinema, the changes were minimal in that they didn't effect the overall pacing or feel of the movie. They were just tighter shots, or cleaner dialogue. The story, characterisation and motivations remained the same. Until 1997 when the movies were re-edited quite significantly into "special" editions and deemed as the "only" editions of the movies that would be released moving forward. These of course were then changed as well.

People don't want original though. They want the original scenes with brand new effects.

The sandcrawler scenes in the DVD and bluray are new for instance. No one is bothered by this because they look good.

The best way to watch it in original condition is early release home media. Good old cassette tapes in the 4:3 scale.

Do you even bother researching or just make this shit up and hope for the best? There has been a very large amount of people who want the original trilogy, my post about Lucasfilm re-releasing the laserdisc sources on DVD to combat piracy should have been a big clue. If it was such a non event and people were happy with the altered ones Lucasfilm wouldn't have bothered. As it is they release different cuts of less successful films all the time so to suggest Star Wars the original cut wouldn't be in demand is laughable.

That's not at all correct. Many of us want the originals with the award winning special effects included as they originally appeared. Visit originaltrilogy.com and you'll see exactly why we want them.

To a point I understand Lucas' reasons but I'm really perplexed that there are so many fans who actually want to suppress these versions as well. These are the original edits of Star Wars we all fell in love with re-watching over and over again, wearing out the video tapes.

We want to be able to have high res anamorphic scans that still look good on today's technology. No one is saying anything about updating the effects etc. There is no need to change anything about the original print.

The blue bubble around the landspeeder and the green squares around the Tie fighters only get worse with a high deg update, unless you're scrubbing them out ala the special editions.

Have you watched Harmy's despecialised editions? They are simple rescans of the actual original 35mm film mixed with special edition bluray live action and original edition DVD effects. Harmy combined them all to create a hi res version of the original eduts that while not perfect, are as close as possible given the resources we have.

None of them have the issues you are talking about.

Sadly I stopped watching the OT after the SE versions supplanted them like PODS from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

But they're classics for a reason!
