Post-OT, Pre-ST has a vast untapped span of years. Only now being explored thru books like Bloodlines, for example. There's far more scope for original story-telling and creating Canon in this era due to that. Plus, it would be immediately audience-grabbing as it would focus on existing characters like Luke, Leia, Han, etc. As well as Rey, Kylo, Snoke, etc. And yes, it has to be animation because of human actors ages, can't be used. But also because animation (imo) allows you far more directorial/production leeway than live action.

If the same people still write these stories they aren't going to become any better just because they're set in a different time-frame. What should happen is that a competent storyteller should take control while Filoni is responsible for all the technical stuff regarding animation.

-----

That is true. The writing problem.

I think Disney needs to keep these guys on their toes, doing better work, by hiring other people to do the writing for different shows. These guys like Filoni, Hidalgo, etc, get so comfortable, become sacred cows, and are not really challenged/inspired to do better if their jobs are perpetually safe.

Some of these writers used for books and comics, like the Marvel Darth Vader writer, could be hired. I can't see why not.

All the points made regarding writers and eras is correct. Still, the next animated TV show being centered in the Pre-ST era makes the most sense, no? You have this new Trilogy happening right now. Once Snoke and Rey's parents are finally revealed (which should occur in TLJ), which airs this December, and Rebels season 4 finishes about 2018/19...then it would be perfect timing to dive into this era.

I found the last episode disappointing as we really didn't see any of my specific fleet tactics. Definitely underwhelming, it didn't really follow Zahn's interpretation quite as well but I suppose it's a high bar to reach in the first place. The best one is still "Through Imperial Eyes".

Also, one of the Ghost crew should have died.

Filoni right at the end of that PANEL announces season 4 will be the last of Rebels.

And that theyll probably move on to some other animated series, no idea yet.
Happy they're ending it after this season. Getting a bit close to ANH. Also, I'm tipping the show will end with Hera going into the Battle of Scarif with Chopper with everyone else already dead. Can't wait to see how they end the show.

Also, Kallus looking beast with the new look

On the notion that the entire crew of the Ghost die or several members die, etc, and that they do not exist in the time of ANH...

Someone mentioned that during ANH, when Luke, Leia etc arrive on Yavin, you can hear 'phoenix squadron' being said over the intercom. Phoenix Squadron being the call-sign of the Ghost crew ;)

Rumor that Director Krennik appears in an episode or two of Season 4.
Also, that Thrawn dies from his body-guard (voiced by Warwick Davis) like Thrawn died in the original Thrawn Series of books.

Just because Rukh is in season 4 does not spell doom for Thrawn. It could be that Thrawn just meets Rukh in the season and takes him as his personal body guard. At some point, Thrawn is given orders in the Unknown Regions and he takes Rukh along with him. Then, at some point post-RotJ, they return from the Unknown Regions (perhaps with coordinates for a gathering of Imperial ships (think Aftermath trilogy)? Or something like that. Point being that Thrawn survives past RotJ and Rukh kills him eventually.
