So I've mentioned it before and I think with a few tweaks the movie could have been much less divisive and had a far better audience reaction without substantially changing the overall narrative.

1. Adjust the results of the attack on the bridge to get rid of the Leia's Mary Poppins moment. Still have the loss of life and Leia injured but not to the ridiculous level of her surviving after being blown into space.
2. Have the casino side mission be sanctioned and remove the stupid mutiny sub plot.
3. Have Phasma sent to track the ship from the casino side mission with her on their tail in the Casino planet and providing urgency rather than having local authorities doing it. DJ was actually working for her the whole time and it was all a trap orchestrated by Hux thereby making him look more competent.
4. Have Leia take Holdo's place and have her pilot the cruiser with Holdo boarding the escape shuttle. Have Luke do his astral goodbye with Leia before she rams the first order fleet.
5. Adjust the Luke/Ben situation so that Luke going for/igniting his lightsabre is a reaction to Snoke (and not a fleeting thought of ending Ben because Dark Side). He still fells the guilt and shame for failing to notice/prevent Snoke influencing Ben until it was too late.
6. No Rey is nobody and her parents abandoned/sold her.
Agree with all of this except the last point, as long as there is a good reason as to why Rey is so powerful. Her lineage has become a hot potato of sorts, being tossed back and forth by the directors/writers

'You deal with it'
'No you deal with it!'
'No YOU deal with it!'

That 'mutiny' sub plot was just as painful as Finn's sub plot, was just as painful as the whole Casino thing

Should have all been cut and replaced with stuff that had actual gravitas

Amazing people talk of Luke being so out of character when one of the worst portrayals of that was Anakin in Lucas’ diabolical Clone series
So what?

The prequels being crap doesn't elevate this movie or justify its deep gaping flaws in any shape or form.

Um, I loved the prequels. Say what you will, but they were "Star Warsy" and rollicking adventures, with a bunch of EU involved, gorgeous costumes and world building, and and yeah.
Revenge of the Sith is my 3rd favourite SW movie after ANH and ESB

Del Toro was easily the best part of the film

If you disagree then Santa hates you
If he had said something like...

I have stones to sell, fat to chew, and many different men to see about many different dogs, so if I am not rushing you..

It would have been epic.

ROTS only looked good in comparison to the first two prequels. It's still pretty turgid and comfortably behind Return of the Jedi, R1 and the new trilogy, imo.

There was a lot of doom and gloom around TLJ numbers but it appears to have bounced back solidly with a $100m weekend. Seems the talk about holiday placements were accurate.

This is a quote from the Jurrasic world : fallen kingdom thread

That's just it, I don't enjoy it. They seem like cash grabs aimed at our sense of nostaliga, but made without real care or love of the original. I absolutely agree they have potential, which is why it disappoints me so much.
Sounds very familiar to TLJ atm

SW was always going to make money

It’s not an indication of the quality of the film.
And yet the doomsayers have been pointing to large Friday to Friday drops as evidence most people didn't like the film. Star Wars was 'always going to make money' but there are still expectations that it needs to meet and it looks like meeting them. Critics loving it and people going back to see it again definitely suggests more people think it's a quality film than don't.

Who gives a flying **** what "mainstream critics" say? Most of these pretentious twats aren't into Star Wars at all, and it is in their benefit to give a good score so that Di$ney gives their organisation freebies like early screenings. The only reason it's being "critically acclaimed" is because it has a Star Wars tag on it. Take a look at Cinemascope for Episode 1, they gave it an A- average. No friggin' way it's that high, same for this movie. The audience reviews are what counts, and plenty of them are quite eloquent in pointing out the various flaws, even from people who had low expectations in the first place or aren't necessarily Star Wars fans.

You have no way of knowing how many of those are going back to see it twice/thrice/etc. Considering the relative drop compared to the other films, it is safe to say that a lot of them aren't going for multiple servings. Then there's the fact that people coming back from Christmas/people waiting until now because of the crowd/etc.

If this is a "quality" film then so's Transformers. Some people are saying "oh see it a 2nd time, you'll like it then"... if I have to see it a 2nd time to like it, then it's shit from the beginning. The horrific writing, plot, lack of character development will still be there, possibly magnified.

Audience ratings aren't exactly trustworthy either. Forget rotten tomatoes, they are reflected by box office numbers. Transformers 2 had shit critic and audience scores but they weren't reflective of the movies popularity since 3 and 4 made a shit tonne of money. It wasn't until the 5th that the numbers dropped off. Unless the new Star Wars movies start becoming consistently poorly reviewed by professionals which is yet to happen for any of them, the Force remains strong with the franchise.

Box office numbers doesn't mean shit when it comes to the quality of a movie. Star Wars is the biggest movie franchise in the world, and many many people are going to see it whether it's good or not. Besides, you can't exactly rate a movie during its release if you don't go buy a ticket and see it yourself.

Otherwise, Avatar is the best science fiction movie of all time.

I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth

Are you kidding me? Some of the worst dialogue and characters in sci fi history. An abomination! Ohh but it’s all Star Warsy...ooh ahh...boo hoo

That was easily the worst Star Wars in my opinion. It lead us somewhere in the overall story which was still great. But the acting, dialogue, script and worst of all was the CGI set after set after set....no wonder the actors struggled, all green screen. TLJ is not without its problems but I enjoyed it a lot. Will go back a second time soon.
