I still believe Kylo killing Han is (will be) the trigger for his (re)turn back to the light.
He thought - as Snoke had him believe that it was his family holding him back, stopping him from fulfilling his destiny. Convinced in Snoke's wisdom, he killed Han to free himself from his internal conflict. It didn't work, and his pain and confusion is only exacerbated - providing the frayed strings of 'good' that Rey is able to use to bring him back to the light.
