Kylo would be better as a wildcard character, in my opinion. I still firmly believe he’ll go darker before he goes lighter, though. And I had been pretty convinced of eventual redemption but now I’m starting to doubt it. As Rey grows in the light (let’s all face it - she’s not going Dark) he might grow in darkness. They are opposites, after all.

It looks like the guard to Rey's left was holding Kylo's ignited saber, and she force grabs from him, why in that gif that guard on her left does a quick little "oops" kind of motion, like something got snatched from his hand. And then the guard to her right quickly responds to a clearly threatening development and comes in aggressively with his weapon straight for her.

Which means Kylo is being detained or something, off-camera.

I'm guessing Snoke off-camera has Kylo in some force hold, draining him or torturing him, and Rey then tries to help him, by grabbing the saber and attacking the guards, which then allows Kylo to escape that "hold" and join in, as both Kylo and Rey fight all eight Praetorian Guards, obviously beating them, and then there's a confrontation with Snoke.

I'm getting Luke calling the saber from the emperors throne in Jedi.

Here's the crux of TLJ that merits debate....

A bunch of the story is known, but the essential part that is often hyped about is how Rian Johnson crafted a story that is "shocking" and "blurs good and evil" among all the characters, making us see ill in the decisions/motivations of the "good" side, and have compassion in the decisions/motivations of the "bad' side.

People have been reading into that then, that something must happen like Luke or Rey turning to the Dark Side, and presume Kylo returns to the light side. And that question imo is the crux of TLJ.

I wonder tho if Luke and Rey don't turn to the dark side at all, and if Kylo never returns to the light either. That they all remain in their paths, through to the end of Ep VIII. And instead, it's just that AT TIMES these characters merely flirt with the dark/light side, or instead Rian's script is good in that he layers into the story parts where we as the viewer see a side in Leia/Luke/Poe/Finn that we're meant to not like, selfish, petty, even bad....and parts where we see in Kylo/Snoke/Phasma something admirable, hospitable, sympathetic. And it's merely that written into their dialog/exposition, all the while all the characters REMAIN on the side they're already on -- Luke is still good ole Luke fighting evil, Leia still a champion of democracy, Poe and Finn still Top Guns, Kylo still (or even more) dark and evil, perhaps even gunning for Snoke's role, power-hungry like Anakin, and Rey never a dark side leaner, still fighting Kylo to the death over the death of Han and because he's becoming the face of the hated First Order even more, rising to more power and she must stop him, the last hope.

Basically....as TLJ unfold from start to finish....Luke is good, Rey is good, Kylo is even more evil, Snoke is even more dangerous, and never do any of these characters turn, and episode VIII ends with a situational cliffhanger only -- like the end of TESB. The outcome of events left up in the air, rather than any character's turning or being revealed as someone else.
That would be the safe...and boring creative decision for sure. Hoping for a little more complexity myself.

Not particularly wanting 'evil' Luke or anything. Just after more depth to all the characters.

In what world does Luke not already have depth? Maybe I'm stuck in 1983 but Luke Skywalker is Star Wars and I'm disappointed that so many people only see him as a peripheral part of the new trilogy. It's his saga.

Wasn't really thinking about Luke. But if he walked into this series as a straight-laced Alec Guiness or Qui Gon it'd be a bit of a yawn. It seems they're at least not giving us that.

Kylo and Rey would be far less interesting if they're just hero asnd villain though.

More to do with how predictably they behave. If you know a character is basically on a one way trip they're less interesting.

Vader was more interesting in TESB than in ANH because he was actually doing things other than being just a panto bad guy thug.

That's why many people MIGHT be letdown by TLJ....because the hype of how complex/dark/amazing/shocking the script is might lead people to imagine all kinds of plot points, investing in them, only to find the story is still heroine vs villain.

Is that seriously a spoiler?
Might have to avoid this thread now.
Time to avoid this thread because Darth Spoiler aka GG.exe is on a mission to find leaks.

But....that lack of green lightsaber in the VD does not mean it isn't in the movie or Luke doesn't use it. Often they leave out things that are in the movie, the VD itself isn't there to spoil the entire movie, just provide some jewels.

This is precisely my point. Rey and Kylo I think represent a breaking of the cycle; something hugely significant in the Force is coming.
-----
I think so too, and I think that Snoke is trying to bring it about. It’s his whole motivation for starting the First Order, to create a conflict in which dark and light rise to meet each other. He’s seen that every major conflict throughout the ages has led to that as a byproduct or side-effect, so now he’s creating conflict specifically to trigger that response from the Force. He’s trying to hack the Force, if you will. For what purpose, and what outcome he expects, we have yet to discover.

Mostly Minor Spoilers from Upcoming TLJ Children's Books (SELF.STARWARSLEAKS)

submitted 5 hours ago*by porganon

Edit: One of the mods (/u/ugnaught) has successfully purchased these books as well as Five Minute Stories Strike Back.

Here are their posts:

5-minute Stories Strike Back: Captured in Canto Bight (book leak!)

5-minute Stories Strike Back: Poe's Plan (book leak!)

Rey's Journey (book leak!)

Rose and Finn's Secret Mission (book leak!)

Some spoilers are definitely not-so-minor!

I was in Toys"'R"Us today and found Rey's Journey and Rose and Finn's Mission on an endcap in the book section. They also had Chewie and the Porgs as well as Cobalt Squadron (about the Tico sisters). These are all supposed to be released on the 15th.

Chewie and the Porgs is adorable and has amazing artwork, but not a whole lot in the way of spoilers. Chewbacca initially disliked the porgs but they eventually become friends. Cobalt Squadron is a more detailed chapter book, but ends right before TLJ begins so no actual movie spoilers.

Rey's Journey and Rose and Finn's Mission give a little more insight into the movie. I was pressed for time, so I've just transcribed the most interesting parts. Also, I'm terrified of Disney.

There were really only two things I thought were worth posting in Rey's Journey, a second grade-level book.

Rey wants Luke to help the Resistance and tries to give him his lightsaber:

But Luke did not want his lightsaber. Luke threw the lightsaber over a cliff. Then Luke walked away. Rey was shocked.

After Luke meets R2-D2 again on the Millennium Falcon:

" It was a message from long ago. It was young Leia asking for help. Luke had helped his sister then. And she needed his help again. Luke decided to train Rey."

Rose and Finn's Mission is for slightly older kids and has more details.

Finn wakes up and the Resistance ship is attacked. This is a seperate battle from the one at the very beginning of the movie. He decides to commandeer an escape pod to go find Rey:

But a young Resistance technician named Rose stopped Finn from sneaking away in an escape pod. Rose hated traitors. Her sister had given her life for the resistance during an earlier battle with the First Order. Rose zapped Finn using a small electro-stun prod. She would turn him in for desertion. When Finn came to, he explained to Rose that the First Order had tracked the Resistance through hyperspace. But Rose knew a thing or two about the new technology, including that it could only track something from a single source. That meant only the main First Order ship was tracking them through hyperspace. [page 10].

Maybe Finn and Rose could disable the tracking device on the main First Order ship so the Resistance could escape without being followed. They ran their idea past Poe. It was risky, but Poe liked risky ideas. They would just need a codebreaker to crack the First Order clearance codes to get on board. Fortunately, their friend Maz Kanata knew a Master Codebreaker who could help them he lived in the glamorous city of Canto Bight on Catonica. [page 11]

Rose and Finn travel to Canto Bight with BB-8 (unbeknownst to them) on board. The Master Codebreaker wears a "Red Plom Bloom" on his lapel to identify him. Before Rose and Finn can talk to him, the Canto Bight police arrest them after their ship was found on a local beach. DJ is apparently in the same prison cell Rose and Finn are put in. He says he can "bust them out of jail, crack the First Order Clearance codes, and sneak them on board the First Order Destroyer" (p. 21). All DJ has to do to break out is "press a few buttons and smack the heavy door." It ends after that.

That is going to be quite a powerful emotional moment. Shouldve "spoilered" those two posts.

People who have no idea whatsoever about TLJ are going to be shocked, surprised. People like us who have been discussing the finer points of many leaks and possible details will be a little more weathered.

Also, with Rey spending a lot of time chasing after Luke trying to get him to train her, the rest of the movie is moving along at a steady pace. So, it'd be like half-way in the movie before Luke finally starts training Rey. By then, the First Order and Kylo are in the thick of the ultimate battle on Crait. So how is that enough time for Rey to suddenly go from no training, to being super skilled when she's in Snoke's room (which happens just after the events of Crait). It's that Mary Sue thing again. Luke from ANH to TESB was still not strong enough, Vader accounted for him easily. And Anakin from AOTC to ROTS was still getting whooped by Dooku. Rey's Force power development and general mastery could be again too excessive in TLJ.

That's my concern. I know it'll be a solid movie but I want something DIFFERENT for real. I saw someone claiming they were leaking information about Kylo and Rey looking for relics or something. Even a simple thing like that perked my interest because....SOMETHING NEW!!!

but again -

Starts with rebels being attacked.
Finn/Luke healing up.
Finn and Rose go to a new planet to find someone that could help them. ( DJ/Lando )
They get locked up/caught.
Luke reluctant to train, yoda reluctant to train.
Luke/Yoda convinced to train by something.

It's like a check list. I was a big defender of TFA's similarities to ANH because to me it was superficial but at a certain point you'd hope they'd mix things up a bit more.

"Lesson One" is track 8 in this movie. The beginning of the Luke/Rey stuff sounds tedious to me. We had like a five minute stretch in ESB where Yoda debated training Luke while Luke pleaded. The reasoning was different obviously, but this does seem like stretching that out while not adding a whole lot to it.

I'm sure it will be very beautifully shot though at least. I'm especially looking forward to however Rey gets down the cliff side and retrieves the saber. I bet the shot into the ocean of the x-wing is gorgeous.
