In a long, long interview with Wired, director J.J. Abrams reveals that the script for Episode VIII is already finished. It was written by Rian Johnson, who will also direct the next installment. Abrams also said that he gave Johnson a wealth of access throughout the process of making The Force Awakens so that the torch may be passed as smoothly as possible. "The script for VIII is written," Abrams told Wired. "I’m sure rewrites are going to be endless, like they always are. But what [Force Awakens co-writer] Larry [Kasdan] and I did was set up certain key relationships, certain key questions, conflicts. And we knew where certain things were going.

"We had meetings with Rian and Ram Bergman, the producer of VIII," he continues. "They were watching dailies when we were shooting our movie. We wanted them to be part of the process, to make the transition to their film as seamless as possible. I showed Rian an early cut of the movie, because I knew he was doing his rewrite and prepping. And as executive producer of VIII, I need that movie to be really good. Withholding serves no one and certainly not the fans. So we’ve been as transparent as possible."

What Rian Johnson Brings To Star Wars Episode 8, According to Benicio Del Toro

Even though Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn’t actually been released yet, it’s impossible not to look beyond the seventh installment of the franchise. Not only is the saga going to continue on with Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX, but there’s also Rogue One and Han Solo and Boba Fett films planned, as well. Benicio Del Toro will be involved in Episode VIII, as the film’s villain, and he’s recently been talking about what attracted him to the project, and why Rian Johnson is the perfect director for this world.

Benecio Del Toro made these comments to Empire Magazine while out promoting his impressive turn in Sicario. The Puerto Rican actor was asked what Johnson would bring to Star Wars: Episode VIII, which led him to insist that the Brick and Looper director is going to bring a new energy to proceedings. Del Toro explained in more detail:

I think [he brings] like a cool sci-fi realism, if I may say that, if that makes any sense. You know, I love his film Looper, and his other work. I just like talking to him about the film. I think he’s one of those new talented people that Star Wars is hiring to infuse the franchise with new steroids.

Rian Johnson was immediately labelled as a savvy choice to oversee the eighth addition to the Star Wars franchise when his inclusion was announced. In fact, looking at this career, he has actually been building to this for a while. Brick is a terrific ensemble piece, that is majestically plotted and beautifully paced. Meanwhile, The Brothers Bloom has a cheeky charm and humor that would lend itself well to any Star Wars film, and Looper was a grounded and intimate story that existed in a sci-fi world that thrives just as much because of its characters as because of its action. All of these traits would be perfect for Episode VIII.

When it was announced that the Star Wars franchise was being brought back and expanded in such a huge and impressive fashion, the powers that be immediately sought out some of the most prestigious mainstream, blockbuster writers and directors in cinema. After much deliberation, with Brad Bird and Matthew Vaughn among numerous filmmakers who were considered, J.J. Abrams was finally hired as Star Wars: Episode VII’s director, producer and co-writer, before it was then announced that Rian Johnson would director Episode VIII from a script written by Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg.

The same approach was made for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as the Han Solo and Boba Fett anthology films. Rogue One is being overseen by Gareth Edwards, who previously excelled in the field of visual effects before bringing to life the beguiling blockbusters Monsters and Godzilla.

Meanwhile Han Solo’s adventure will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who over the last few years have become one of the most in-demand pairs in cinema thanks to their work on 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

Unfortunately, plans for the solo Bob Fett movie moved back to square one earlier this summer when the original choice to direct, Josh Trank, announced that he was no longer directing. It was widely assumed that this was because of his botched attempt to film Fantastic Four, with rumors surrounding his on-set behavior having been swirling for months.

Still, that hasn't come close to taking the wind out of the Star Wars franchise's sails. And after Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released in December, we can expect one Star Wars film a year for quite some time.

I'd say you must have missed the prequels, but no need to derail this again.

It was also 40 years ago. Villainous characters have come a long way and people expect more than evil for the sake of evil.

Also good vs bad movies can work. Almost every movie has a protagonist and antagonist. You don't see filmmakers feeling the need to reinvent the wheel. SW tropes can continue to work as long as there's PROGRESS in a saga storyline. This is where VII and VIII have failed mostly, not coming up with a better "progression" story

Just threw together a rough fan edit
  • Removed some of the bad jokes (Hux/yo mama joke, any major Porg scene)
  • Trimmed the Canto Bight sequence
  • Leia dies when she gets sucked into space (this took a lot off the overall runtime)
  • The Poe mutiny doesn't happen - Holdo takes over and they just wait for Finn & Rose to return
Ended up being ~2 hrs in total, can upload it if anyone is interested
I want to see it

The prequels weren't complex works either; sure, they were committed to Anakin turning bad, but it's still droid army and dark lords versus wholesome Jedi. Star Wars is still a family movie, which is what some people refuse to accept.

Alright fellas here it is, decided to use MediaFire. The file is 1.29GB. I actually enjoyed making this, as it confirmed what I liked about the movie. There's one bit of black screen where I didn't join two clips together properly. It got tricky after Crait because there were a lot of quick cuts to Leia, and you should be able to tell where I made edits as the soundtrack changes are obvious.

Anyway here's something to watch over the weekend, hope you enjoy it.

  • Stalling Hux with the prank call is removed, goes straight to Poe attacking the dreadnought and Hux saying he's insane. Rest of the scene is unchanged (bombers attack etc)
  • Finn wakes up, cut before he rolls off the table and tubes pissing everywhere. Remove BB8/Poe gag "did you fry a chip"
  • Luke is handed the lightsaber and just walks past Rey back down the hill, no tossing over the shoulder
  • Shot of Porgs making their noise is cut
  • Rey doesn't go and pick up the lightsaber from the Porgs
  • Rey follows Luke but we don't see the alien getting milked - cuts straight to Luke traversing across the chasm with the spear
  • "I've seen your routine, you're not busy" is cut
  • Poe doesn't get demoted - cuts straight to Finn saying "so we're really nowhere"
  • Kylo attacks the cruiser and Leia gets sucked into space, this is the last we see of her
  • Chewie eating a Porg is cut
  • Rebel general chick says that Leia and Ackbar are gone, Holdo is in charge
  • Holdo v Poe conversation is cut, everyone just gets on with their jobs
  • Finn and Rose tell Poe the plan, scenes of Leia in the background are cut
  • Maz conversation is shortened - cut straight to the part where she talks about the codebreaker
  • The "reach out" leaf branch gag is cut, Luke just tells Rey to reach out with her feelings
  • Shot of the luxury yacht on Canto Bight is cut
  • Finn and Rose approach, cuts to their shuttle on the beach and the alien telling the police
  • Long shot of Canto Bight casino is shortened (BB8 doesn't have coins inserted in him)
  • Shots of Finn acting like a kid in the candy shop are cut
  • The fathier racing/mistreatment scene is cut, BB8 rolls up to Finn and Rose saying he found the codebreaker (this part is a bit out of whack)
  • Caretaker's shopping trolley being destroyed by the rock is cut
  • Short scene of prison guards gambling is cut - goes straight to Finn and Rose in the cell
  • Scene of DJ and BB8 taking down the guards with coins is cut
  • Fathier escape doesn't go via the casino - that stupid alien laughing in the money is cut
  • "Now it's worth it" is cut - goes straight to DJ arriving in the nick of time
  • Luke meditates but it doesn't cut to Leia, instead he just realises that she's gone
  • Rey leaves the island, we never see Yoda and the tree isn't destroyed
  • Poe calling Holdo a coward is cut, instead it only shows Finn and Poe communicating that they need more time
  • Poe explaining the plan to Holdo and holding her captive is cut
  • Poe doesn't clear the bridge and take over, no lame chitchat with 3PO, Leia doesn't stun Poe (she's dead)
  • Leia and Holdo don't chat about Poe, and how someone needs to stay behind - instead it's seen as a heroic action by Holdo to stay and kamikaze into Snoke's ship whilst the Rebels evacuate - this means we don't get any info on Crait
  • BB8 in the walker is mostly cut - he just arrives after Finn kills Phasma
  • Shot of Leia standing at the blast doors is cut (she's dead)
  • Poe patting BB8 like a dog is cut
  • All scenes with the Porg in the Falcon cockpit are cut
  • "Oh they hate that ship" is cut
  • Hux "concentrate all fire on the speeders" after Kylo says the same thing is cut
  • Rose stops Finn but doesn't give him the speech - it just ends with Finn saying "why'd you do that?", she kisses him and the gun fires on the blast doors
  • Luke arrives at the base without his entrance in the robe. Leia was in this scene so for continuity it had to be cut
  • 3PO is the first to acknowledge him, no chat between Luke and Leia
  • Luke brushing his shoulder after the bombardment is cut
  • Poe leads the escape out - Leia saying "follow him" is cut
  • Luke saying "the rebellion is reborn today" is cut because Leia is in frame when he says it
  • Leia sensing Luke's death is cut
  • Shot of remaining Resistance members in the Falcon is cut because Leia, cuts straight to the Falcon in hyperspace and then to broom kid
  • Movie ends as per usual
All of these edits reduced the total runtime by about 20 minutes.

Unless anyone can unkill Luke, and add his green lightsabre, I won't be watching any fan edits.

Seriously? On the first point, did you expect Luke to survive the trilogy when it was clearly made as a passing of the torch? On the second, that really plays into 'muh Luke', which people have spent plenty of time denying.
