Prediction Starting Best 22 2017

I've got around 8-10 certainties for round 1, otherwise it's really tight for spots.

There's going to be quite afew decent players down at Sandy each week
Only 8-10 certainties for Round 1? Dude, I've got about 26!

From having a tiny midfield only last season, we go into 2017 having one of the biggest -

Acres, Stevens, Ross, Steele and possibly Membrey rolling through - all 188 plus, and with big frames

With Gilbert able to pinch hit as well

Gilbert can't be best 22 with Carlisle, Brown, Dempster, Roberton and strength through the inside midfield now

Would be a pretty big drop to go from 12th in the B&F (and having been best 22 for about 10 years) to not being in the team at all. Will probably be one of the last picked and he'll have to be on his game to make it, but I suspect he'll still be in there and given an opportunity to prove he's still worthy of a spot. Apart from anything else he might be the one to replace Dempster in the 3rd-tall role at the end of the year and his speed, versatility and tackling would all appeal to the coaching staff.

Could do worse than to have him replace Wright in the defensive forward role, given he too is fast and has a terrific tackling/defensive game, but he'd be much more of a marking threat than Nathan and more likely to get more of the ball and hit the scoreboard and he's even a better kick.

Hopefully he realises it's last-chance-saloon time and he turns back the clock, because if we lose say Dempster and Roo at the end of the year, we won't have a lot of that grand finals experience left.

See we're your coming from, although not sure he could play that forward role. He's 194

He has recently played as a key back or a inside/big midfielder.
We are bringing in Brown/Carlisle and Steele/Stevens who are specialists in those positions and better than him for mine.

My Team (and really choosing a team 4 months out from the start of the season is probably a futile exercise... Wouldn't bet on it haha) for Round One:

FB: Geary (Co-Captain); Brown; Webster
HB: Newnes (Future Captain); Carlisle; Roberton
C: Acres; Armitage (Co-Captain); Riewoldt (Wise Ol' Former Captain)
HF: Membrey; Bruce; Billings
FF: Weller (Co-Captain); McCartin; Lonie
R: Hickey; Steven (Superstar); Ross
I: Gresham; Dunstan; Stevens; Steele (if fully fit)/Savage

Emergencies: Montagna, Dempster, Sinclair, Goddard (if fully fit), Longer/Holmes...

I think it'll be good to see how we go without Gilbert, Montagna, Dempster etc...

I like the idea of having designated a leader in each third of the pitch... Maybe it's just me though...

Our list is looking very good... Competition for spots is looking immense this year.

Love your work mate but thinking that Montagna amd Dempster are locks early on.

I don't see why his height would impede him at all from playing the sort of role Nathan was playing, given how agile/mobile/quick he is and how good his tackling is. I reckon the other teams would rather have to contend with Nath than Sam, who is, as you pointed out, 194cm and much more of a threat in the air and probably offensively. He was expected to play midfield and forward this year until he was again needed down back.

I would consider him to be a likely upgrade on Nathan, but I would also think the same of say Stevens, Steele and hopefully Lonie and maybe even Long, soon enough, so it will be very interesting to see what we do in many positions.

There will be a few who have been in the team for either a little while or a long while, who will feel under immense pressure to keep their spots (eg. Sam, Dunstan, Webster, Wright, D-Mac- with 4 of those 5 being some of the quickest in our team).

He has recently played as a key back or a inside/big midfielder.

He also played a fair bit this year on a HBF/BP type role, which is where he looked the most comfortable, but of course if Carlisle and Brown come in with only Chips going out it pushes one more out of there and I'm guessing that due his versatility to play other areas, Sam will be the one that goes out. If so, it just remains to be seen whether it's right out of the team, or to another part of the ground. Or to the bench, to just plug in wherever we need him at any time.

B: Geary - Dempster - Webster
HB: Montagna - Carlisle - Savage
C: Riewoldt - Armitage - Acres
HF: Weller - Bruce - Billings
F: Membrey - McCartin - Gresham
RK: Hickey - Steven - Ross
INT: Dunstan, Newnes, Steele, McKenzie.

EM: White, Stevens, Gilbert, Lonie, Sinclair.

Want in the team when/if ready: Long, Freeman.
Getting tight for spots, would love to see McKenzie demand Montagna's spot by season's end, likewise with White vs. Savage.

You want Savage out of the 22?
I feel like he keeps getting underrated year after year. Incredibly important. The best kick in the comp just past the half way mark of the season got anyone who had 150 kicks or more from memory and also started taking quite a few intercept marks in the back half of the year. Don't think he loses his spot any time soon. Also a victim of our small defence at time, occasionally he was the second or third tall against the monsters which was ridiculous and thus for periods would go out of the game due to having to try his best to hold down someone much taller and be more accountable while it was his rotation.

Honestly it's dumbfounding that people would leave Dempster out of the 22 after the acquisition of Carlisle and Brown. For the first time in ages he is able to do what he is best at; the third tall back which drifts off his man to intercept marks. Though he always gave it his all, Dempster has always been too undersized to be a key defender, which is why guys like Hogan and Jenkins have kicked bags against the saints. But with Dempster picking up an opponents third tall and therefore able to hover around the defensive 50, the backline setup becomes a lot more potent. Remember, he was the Eastern Wood before Easton Wood.

Agreed he is a great kick and would like him in the team ideally, but also want to get White into his natural HBF position and let him develop. Savage needs to push for the wing (or mid?) spot so he's there post Riewoldt.

Couldn't agree more. I am constantly surprised savage is out of some of these best 22s.
One of the better kicks in the team and one of our only line-breakers.
If we want to make a jump up the ladder we need a couple of players to step it up. I think he is a prime example of someone who could. Potentially unpopular call but if he can string a consistent year together I can see him being an AA 40 squad type of player.

This isn't my best, just a shits n gigs mock.

Too many forward line combos. Be curious to see..

FF: Billings Riewoldt Long

We play the dees first up.
They'll likely play Hogan, Watts and Weed so I'd be surprised if Brown didn't play.
Carlisle brown, robbo / dempster should play.
Love to see some Long magic first game of the year too.

Would be a wise thing to do. Carlisle gets first try on Hogan, but if he's rusty Brown can have a shot.
