Roast State of the modern game; Clarkson

Chris Scott just said in the 16 vs 16 intraclub training really opens up the game amd makes zoning a lot harder.

Simpson just agreed with him. Make it happen in pre-season already.

I would go one further and go 15 v 15. I think we can then have a 5-5-5-5 situation, 15 on the field, 5 on the interchange bench.

Change the rule to 20m then maybe they will call only the 15m+ ones.
Don't get this one. Wouldn't longer kicking mean more kicking to contests which means more stoppages? Wouldn't that also make it harder to hit up a set shot inside 50 and get a scoring shot?

Another problem with it.

What happens if let's say Caleb Daniel tries to tackle Mason Cox, Caleb grubbing on for dear life and wrapping his arms around Cox. Now no teammate can help Caleb out so that means Cox can pretty much run down the field with immunity because he is giving Caleb Daniel a piggy back ride.
So, he can only run 15 mts before he has to bounce the ball.
If he’s being tackled at the same time it’s throwing/incorrect disposal.
So could never happen.

The game can move fast from stoppages if you speed the stoppages up.

This will stop the silly 8m sideways kicks to waste time.

Yep, I'd go with that! 15 on the field 5-5-5 but change it to 3 interchanges and 2 subs.

16 a side helps reduce zones and allows players to be in more space to advance the ball. More 1 on 1 contests inside 50.
Since people are mentioning it; BT can piss off with his obsession over bouncing the ball every time after a goal,
THROW THE BLOODY THING UP!
If you don't get a job as an afl umpire because you can't bounce a ball then that's just idiotic, one of the worst traditions of the game imo

Making major changes in the middle of a compromised season would be the height of reactionary absurdity in my opinion. It can’t be a shock that after a three month lay off after round one, we’re getting some strange games. Add to that the fact that games are 20% shorter and teams still can’t train together. Wait til next season and see how things are going. If we’re having big issues then, things can be considered.

Clarkson is absolutely on the money in terms of how to stop the rolling maul that the AFL has become. It is simple. Umpire the game according to the RULES. AFL is a TEAM sport . And defence is just as important and exciting as attack.

Of course, definitely agree.
Can't make huge changes in the middle of the season, would wait til next preseason for trials.

Umpires and the lack of black and white rules. Take out interpretive rules like the prior opportunity rule.

Also, take out ball bounces .... myyy goodness the amount on crap ball ups that lead to an easy clearance for a team annoys the hell out of me

Zones are too are to police. 36 people running around manically and then whem theres a whistle for a ballup the umpires are meant to check the zones? Would defeat the purpose of speeding up the play. No thanks.

The answer is simple, 4 subs to use as you wish.

If you do that each position on the ground can cover 18% less ground which makes current gameplans way less effective and gives coaches who want to play more attacking positional play a chance.

and before you say clubs are just going to draft runners, let them. If you wanna delist Dusty and recruit Billy Hartung in his place so you can keep youre current style good luck with that.

Exactly. No one in the media seems to be mentioning this as the potential reason. Just, LET'S BRING IN MORE RULES IMMEDIATELY.

People can't seriously want zones?

Whatever happens, they need to take rules away, not add them. Taking away the prior opportunity is the most radical, and will be the most effective. There will be almost no stoppages.

The skill levels of players is so low that there is no reason to have so many players on the field - cut the 'fat' as they say = lower expenses and better quality football because the spuds get cut off the lists. Also opens the games up. If thats 16 then lets try that. This will not have ANY impact on revenues but will save money on costs.

The game is more fun to watch when players are taking the game on. In the past 15yrs there has been a stricter holding the ball intepretation and thus emphasis put on tackling. Players are scared to take the game on because you get pinged holding the ball far too easily. Tackling is a key feature of rugby, it should not be a key feature in our attacking game. Give our players more incentive to take the game on and relax the holding the ball intepretation. Good defence is then rewarded with a 50/50 ball up.

this false reasoning is what has created the mauls because players hold on to it far to long and players move to tackle because they hold on to it far to long including running for longer with rules lengthened for a bounce and increasing the length of the kick from 10 to 15 reducing disposal options!!

If you are good enough you do not need rules to take the game on you just don't argue and if good enough beat the tackle.

The trouble with the game is the ball carrier is a welfare recipient in the modern game which reduces marking contests and kicker ball movement and scoring including the impact of forwards

Every time they make a rule to keep the ball "in play" it has the opposite effect.

It started going backwards when they started to be harder on deliberate out of bounds. Teams didn't have to keep players in positions because a rushed kick resulted in a free. So there's 6 players drawn into the play (flanks and wings). Then it was being looser with holding the ball. As a result the pockets got drawn into it.
Of corse, less frees are being paid, so the talls have now become the get out of jail kick rather than the target.

So simple to fix. Go easier on deliberate out of bounds. Go harder on holding the ball

People need to stop saying this. Round 2, where all he players were tired because their lack of preseason offered no benefits in terms of attacking and open play.
You must have missed the cats hawks game was very free flowing (unfortunately all unidirectional in the 2nd half)
