Our forward line does not play smart footy or give itself the best chance to get 1v1 contests in space.

We do not make space for each other.
We do not block for each other.
our forwards do not lead up at our ball carriers and the other forwards don't then make use of that space by also leading.
Our smalls do not look to be front and centre.
They expect the ball put on their head time and time again competing with 2,3,4 in.

It is a rubbish set up and has been for years, Cloke made his name on being a very hard working fwd with strong hands, he was known for running players into the ground.
He now has become some what lazy and wants the ball sat on his head trying to rely on strength to win out but is constantly overwhelmed or held onto and no free paid, which has the same net result a turnover.

Many times tonight (and other games) our mids and half backs are forced to hold the ball up or chip sideways, looking further up the ground gives the reasons why. The whole forward 6 are standing side by side with their opponents, waving the arms to "bomb it in". on top of this you have the loose man sitting directly between the kicker and the forwards making his LOS see opposition colours.

This is has as much to do with the players as it does the instruction from the coaching staff as it is a common thing over the last 24 months.

I don't think we run enough offering options full stop. We constantly get stuck into kicking down the line because our mids and forwards do not spread or run hard enough to offer a viable option, or create space for each other to run into.

Except for when Elliot doesn't attempt mark of the year we don't have anyone that can crumb. Even if he still stays down he's not the best crumber.

We have no Crumber for Years

Not only that, our small forwards and mids who lead into space 40-50m out then can't make the distance.

Dwyer, Blair and Ball can't kick over a jam tin. Unless it's Goldsack or Fasolo at that distance, forget about it.

We have a magic small forward in the air. We need a magic small forward on the ground.

Except for Cloke, we have no one who can win 1v1

Elliott won plenty of one vs ones tonight. White did alright too. I think Reid back will help. And I think if our ball movement can get better it will help. We weren't horrible in this area tonight although there is some improvement to be made.

I always wonder whether to blame the midfielders more either making the wrong decisions or being crap kicks or the forwards for not finding space and being able to crumb. I think the answer is we are probably sub standard at both.

I guess the one mitigating factor might be that when a side is changing their gameplan it is probably the forward line that is the last thing to work properly since they are reliant on the effective play of the backs and the mids as well as their own play. Thought at time we look reasonably off half back tonight but the further we moved upfield the more dysfunctional it got.

Only after Cloke nearly won the game for us of his own boot. pffft the game was won well before Hawkins, he was held for most of the night.

I agree with you 100 percent. The fact that the team who won had their main forward stand up and kick three final quarter goals despite being well held was entirely coincidental and not related to the outcome of the game in any way.

He had a young guy playing on him all night, who did a great job and wasnt up to the task late in the game, that wont be the case for him every week.

You look at Hawthorn’s forward line setup, and it’s the best going at it. They’re always in constant movement, and making space, and you see the opposition always chasing them 1:1, because they can cut through a zone.

Forward line won’t work without good supply, and good supply is useless without a forward line that works hard to receive the ball, not just try and win it back.
