After finding out about a whole new section of statistics on the AFL app, I've had a look into who some of our better runners are. An area that's always been of interest of me as a Ben Cousins fan growing up was a players willingness to run, as well as the pace in which they covered said kilometres.

At worst it's just an interesting tidbit but I've decided to note some things, plus any patterns I've found along the way for those who don't have access to the data.

Now, the way the AFL app shows the data is limited, it only shows the top 5 players of each category on the field, regardless of their team, so in some games there is more/less representation from Eagles players. The categories I've looked at are:

Km's covered = Self explanatory. Total distance covered for the game.
High speed = Number of kilometres covered at a speed of greater than 18km/h.
Maximum Speed = Highest maximum reached by a player.
Sprinting = A count of the number of times a player goes above 24 km/h for at least 1 second.
Repeat sprint = Number of sprints that occurred within 60 seconds of each other.

So firstly I'll have a look at the number of times an Eagles player made the Top 5 of each category, which should give an overview of strengths of some players.

TIMES IN THE TOP 5:

Total km's

Gaff = 14 times (13 times as the top player on the ground. Incredible)
Masten = 6 times (Not surprising, has missed games as well so could be higher)
Duggan = 5 times (Along with the two highest totals of any Eagle, both in the past month)
Priddis = 4 times (Covers ground but doesn't feature in speed categories)
Jetta = 3 times
Redden = 2 times
Mackenzie = 2 times
Lecras = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Hutchings = 1 time (vs PA game 1)
Mitchell = 1 time (vs Melb)
Shep = 1 time (vs WB game 2)
Vardy = 1 time (vs Port game 2)

High Speed
Gaff = 12 times
Cripps = 6 times (none in the last 4 weeks)
Redden = 5 times (interesting, suggests he covers ground quicker in bursts, perhaps to limited TOG?)
Duggan = 5 times
Jetta = 3 times
Hill = 3 times
Nelson = 2 times
Lecras = 2 times
Karpany = 2 times (the past 2 weeks in a row)
Shep = 2 times
Shuey = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Hutchings = 1 time (vs Port game 1)
Cole = 1 time (vs Geelong)
Masten = 1 time (vs St. Kilda)

Sprinting
Cripps = 10 times
Shepherd = 6 times
Hill = 5 times
Lecras = 4 times (3 of them in a row until the Essendon game)
Jetta = 4 times
Wellingham = 2 times
Darling = 2 times
Yeo = 2 times
Shuey = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Redden = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Mackenzie = 1 time (vs Melbourne)
Karpany = 1 time (vs WB game 2)
Hutchings = 1 time (vs WB game 2, assuming his tag on JJ meant some more sprints required)
Nelson = 1 time (vs Kangaroos)

Repeat Sprints

Cripps = 7 times (at least 5 of those he was the top repeat sprinter from both sides)
Shepherd = 4 times
Lecras = 4 times (3 of those were in a row until the Essendon game)
Darling = 3 times
Jetta = 3 times
Wellingham = 3 times
Hill = 3 times
Gaff = 2 times
Yeo = 2 times
Petrie = 1 time (vs Kangaroos with his broken hand)
Nelson = 1 time (vs Kangaroos)
Butler = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Karpany = 1 time (vs WB game 2)
Shuey = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Redden = 1 time (vs WB game 1)
Duggan = 1 time (vs Sydney)
Masten = 1 time (vs St. Kilda)

Now to look into the maximums reached by some of the eagles players in a single game.

SINGLE GAME MAXIMUMS:

Total Km's

22.0 = Duggan, Mitchell (both in the same game and the only time Mitchell appeared in the top 5)
20.0 = Duggan (who also has: 15.1, 15.1, 13.7)
18.4 = Gaff (whose other numbers include: 17.7, 17.7, 17.2, 16.9, 16.8, 16.7, 16.6, 15.9 etc.)
16.8 = Mackenzie (who also has: 15.3, 14.9)
16.4 = Vardy (his only game in the top 5, it was the loss against Port just gone)
16.3 = Masto (who also has: 15.7, 15.5, 15.4, 15.2 etc.)
16.1 = Hutchings (only time he appears, against Port game 1)
16. 0 = Priddis (who also has: 15.7, 15.5, 14.0)
14.9 = Jetta (against WB game 2)
14.4 = Redden (also has: 13.8)

High Speed (Km's covered at greater than 18km/h)
3.5 = Duggan
3.0 = Cripps, Hill
2.9 = Cripps x2, Gaff x2
2.8 = Cripps, Gaff, Hutchings
2.7 = Jetta x2, Redden
2.6 = Gaff x2, Cripps, Duggan, Karpany, Redden
2.5 = Gaff x2, Duggan x2, Cripps, Redden, Hill, Shepherd

Sprints (Times player reached above 24 km/h)
31 = Cripps, Shepherd
30 = Cripps
29 = Cripps, Jetta, Hill
27 = Jetta
26 = Shepherd, Lecras
25 = Cripps x2, Hill, Karpany
24 = Cripps, Lecras, Shepherd

Repeat Sprints (Times a player reached 24km/h or over within 60 seconds of last sprint)
9 = Shepherd
7 = Cripps x2
6 = Karpany, Hill
5 = Cripps x2, Lecras, Hill, Wellingham
4 = Cripps x2, Darling x2, Shep x2, LEcras, Gaff, Yeo, Wellingham, Jetta, Karpany, Masten

Top Speeds (in km/h)
34.2 = Yeo
33.8 = Jetta
33.6 = Shepherd, McGovern
33.3 = Mackenzie
33.2 = Darling, Barrass
32.8 = Butler (I think I remember this play as well, it stood out)
32.7 = Hill
32.5 = Vardy (very surprising)
32.0 = Nelson, Wellingham
31.8 = Hurn (unlikely)
31.7 = Karpany
31.2 = Masten, Mutimer

Disclaimers = Some performances may be missed for any variety of reasons, for example a game where the top 5 players cover over 16km, you could have any number of players running 15.5kms and never know it, but it's a good representation.

My thoughts:

The GPS tracking may not cover everyone in the game, I doubt all players wear it, for example, does Shuey not run fast (not in the top 5 in any game for maximum speed reached) or is it simply that he only wore the GPS for one game (against the bulldogs)?

Is the maximum speed really accurate? How long does it take to become accurate? Who knows, but interesting to see Yeo and Jetta at the top along with Shepherd, looks accurate by that measurement.

Redden appears quite a bit in the "High Speed" category, perhaps because he's been used in bursts? He covers a lot of his km's over the 18km/h mark considering how little he appears in the top 5 for total kms covered.

Cripps, Hill and Lecras very rarely appeared on the top 5 of total km's covered, but they were in a large number of the sprint categories, it shows a lot into how they're playing the game.

There were more stats like average km/h over the course of the match. From memory the standouts were Hutchings and Duggan, with Priddis popping up a few times.

Can you see what Gaff's top speed is? The guys runs all day but he seems to get left behind frequently by his opponent.

It's interesting that Masten covers so much ground but not at high pace and hasn't been racking up that many possessions.

I would like to know how often Masten runs a long distance without getting the ball

Masten probably does this a fair bit and goes unrewarded.
He does appear to mostly be cruising at a pace below 18km/h, whereas Gaff seems to get above the 18km/h mark a fair bit but very rarely gets into a sprint above 24 km/h.

Priddis covers decent ground but has never been top 5 for going above 18km/h.

Redden for lower total kms has a high rate above 18km/h.

So basically, Duggan = GOAT
From memory there never used to be stats released regularly, but every now and then there would be snippets from interviews and such that gave a hint. I think I remember the odd broadcast a long time ago showing some players GPS results.

From what I remember, Cousins was known to go above 20km, but not often, he normally operated around the 15-18 mark much like Gaff. I think Robert Harvey used to be able to get above 20kms as well on occasion.

Can you see what Gaff's top speed is? The guys runs all day but he seems to get left behind frequently by his opponent.
He has never made the top 5 for maximum speed, which isn't surprising so it's hard to tell. He leads Total Kms and Kms covered at over 18km/h. I'd say that's about where he runs, in that 18-24 km/h range.

That's nice work and very interesting. It seems the work rate of some players is better than it's perceived by some around these parts.

Is it 'unrewarded' though? Forwards making leads over and over are unrewarded, but mids who aren't getting the ball are just being unutilised.

Anyway, I guess we all know Masto has no future in the side so not much point in discussing him

This is my worry with duggan. Already super fit but not getting very much of the ball. It's much easier to get someone fit than it is to improve their game sense and ability to get the pill.
