Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

That is not true (although it’s a close thing).

From 1983 on, Fitzroy have played in more finals series than Richmond

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

A few yrs back now but West Coast kicked 12 goals 1 game with 2 goalkickers(Cummings 8 Phil Matera 4) Can someone please fill in the blanks for me?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

I know we shouldn't get carried away but how is this...

Whoever loses this match on Sunday between Geelong and St. Kilda, could very well go on to win the premiership!

For the past seven seasons, the premiers have actually lost to the runners-up in their last match played against each other.

2008 - Geelong def Hawthorn in R17
2007 - Port Adelaide def Geelong in R21
2006 - Sydney def West Coast in the QF
2005 - West Coast def Sydney in the QF
2004 - Brisbane def Port Adelaide in R11
2003 - Collingwood def Brisbane in QF
2002 - Collingwood def Brisbane in R8

With the strong possibility of a Geelong and St. Kilda Grand Final, maybe it would be worth dropping the four points this week!

Well, well, well!!!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

but perhaps he kicked an extra 4 the week after before he registered a behind

Can't remember which, but i believe he either missed with his first shot against the Dockers or kicked 2.0 before missing.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

4) Can anyone say 'domination'?

Three weeks later they travelled down to the bay again. They started the match well, attacking to score the first point of the match. From then on, Geelong scored the next 162. The final score;

Geelong - 23.24 (162)
St Kilda - 0.1 (1)

Great set of stats! I had a similar thing happen in juniors - a side scored immediately from the first bounce (I remember this well because I got decked in the process), and that was their last score for the day. Meanwhile we went on to kick 39.37 and sneak in by 270 points.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Brad Ottens career is interesting. He played 129 games for the Tigers, participating in 53 Tiger victories and 76 defeats. In the 81 games he's played at Geelong (missing 27 games in the last two seasons for 23 wins as well) he has participated in 59 victories and just 21 defeats plus a draw.

This would be a fascinating stat, would any player who has had a career with two clubs of a substantial length have a win/loss ratio more diametrically opposed than that? Maybe Roger Merrett from Essendon to Brisbane Bears may be the opposite scenario.

Michael Byrne got sold by Melbourne to Hawthorn mid-week. On the Saturday he kicked 8 for the Hawks, and Melbourne kicked 5 in total against Geelong.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

wow some of these are amazing

especially locketts 12 goals. fair enough he wasnt in the umpires good books but 12 goals has to be a BOG effort. im assuming he snuck a few words in agaisnt them too.

Best on ground but not the fairest hence no votes.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Something I was looking at during the week:

Between Round 5, 2007 & the 2009 Grand Final, no team has beaten Geelong twice.

From memory they called a taxi to take him to his new club. He had no idea where it was headed and wound up at Glenferrie.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Great stats there Ron, i forgot about the old exodus from the Blues sides of the early 80's to spoon-bound St.Kilda in the mid 80's such as Sheldon and Marcou.

One thing i've noticed too is that say if you look at the last decade, Geelong has around 62% win ratio, and the worst performed side being Carlton is at a win % of around 37%. Goes to show that at this stage, over a ten-year period, a side would have to be exceptionally poor to lose more than three games out of five, and exceptionally good to maintain a ratio three wins out of five. A lots of the early success of Carlton and Collingwood was gorging on the new arrivals of Hawthorn, Bulldogs and North, those sides rarely winning against the power clubs of the time.

Indeed up to the start of the 1950 season, Collingwood had won 49 of their 51 encounters against Hawthorn!!

Joel Selwood has played in 70 games, for 62 wins and eight defeats.

Travis Varcoe has played 56 games for 50 wins and just six defeats.

Yeah no doubt the gap between best and worst has narrowed due to the policy of equalisation via salary cap, the draft, etc. For all my criticism of the AFL, it's probable that Richmond and perhaps a few other clubs wouldn't exist without this structure.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

For most of the second half of 2006, the four most recent Victorian premiers at the time (Hawks 1991, Blues 1995, Roos 1999, Dons 2000) were sitting at the bottom of the ladder. Symbolic of the fall from grace of Victorian teams.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Most common inning margin
The most common winning margin in AFL, in it's entire history, is 1 point.

2. Most Behinds Scored by One Club in One Match:
41: Hawthorn 25.41 (191) def St. Kilda 16.7 (103) Round 6 1977 Optus Oval

3. Most Consecutive Losses:
University Round 4 1912 - Round 18 1914 (Which Lead to their extinction from the AFL/VFL)

4. Least Accurate Player in One Match:
0.11: Stuart Spencer (Melb) Round 5, 1956 V Geelong; Tom Allen (Rich) Round 14, 1949 V North Melbourne

5. Players that Would've won the Brownlow had not been suspended:
Corey McKernan - 1996
Chris Grant - 1997

6. Highest Winning Margin in a Debut Match
86: Adelaide 24.11 (155) def Hawthorn 9.15 (69) Round 1 1991, AAMI Stadium

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Hawthorn are now the only team to have won at least one Premiership in each decade since the 60's.

60's - 1 (1961)
70's - 3 (1971, 1976, 1978)
80's - 4 (1983, 1986, 1988, 1989)
90's - 1 (1991)
00's - 1 (2008)

And their fans can see their every Premiership on DVD.... Lucky bastards!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Along a similar trend, Collingwood and Hawthorn have not played each other in a final since 1974.

The weirder fact that is there have only been five years (95, 97, 98, 04, 05) where neither team haven't made the finals. Considering the amount of Grand Finals that the Hawks have played (and won) and the Pies have played (and lost) its quite strange.

Also, in 1984, there wasnt a finals game played without Collingwood or Hawks in it, but they still never played each other.

Not right!
Collingwood beat Hawthorn at the 2nd Semi Final in 1977
Hawthorn beat Collingwood at the Qualifying Final in 1978

Also strange is that Richmond and Hawthorn have never met in a Finals match, despite both being in the "top five" in the Sixties to the Eighties (Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Richmond)

Between 1967 to 1983 the Premiership was only shared by four teams (Carlton, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Richmond) with Collingwood being runners up 4 times.

Also in 1975 was the only time all these "top five" made the Finals in the same year.

Has anyone got an actual breakdown of this stat. I don't doubt its true, but I'd like to see what the order of all scores was.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

In Round 15, 1966 Sid Catlin of Melbourne played his second game aged 16 years and 225 days. He kicked 1.8.

It was the only goal he managed in four games with Melbourne before leaving for two seasons at South.

It is the second most inaccurate performance in MFC history behind the 0.11 for Spencer.
