Because of having played 21 home and away games this season, Geelong have now completed a unique numerical sequence. In home and away seasons, they have played:

14 games: 1897, 1918
15 games: 1917
16 games: 1915, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924
17 games: 11 occasions
18 games: 41 occasions
19 games: 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1952
20 games: 1945, 1968, 1969, 1993
21 games: 2015
22 games: 44 occasions

The only thing they cannot claim is to have played in the 12 home and away game season of 1916.

This probably isn't along the same lines as what you had in mind but for me it's The Draft. I can't comprehend why the AFL Season Guide devotes well over 100 pages to who has been drafted each year. Imagine if those 100+ pages were filled, for example, with a selection of data which has been posted here in Stats Questions or in Stats Observations.

When Shane Crawford won the 1999 Brownlow Medal, he became the first and to date only Hawthorn player to win the award in his own right, with no other Hawk winning a Brownlow Medal in 16 years since..

Hawthorn's other Brownlow Medalists all shared the medal with a player from another club; Colin Austin tied with Ron Clegg (Swans) in 1949, Robert DiPierdomenico with Greg Williams (Swans) in 1986 and John Platten and Tony Lockett (St Kilda) in 1987.

Whenever one looks at a completed ladder and sees the wooden spoon team with only one win from the season, one automatically wonders 'who did they beat?'. Here is a list of the bunnies of 1 victory wooden spooners of the AFL/VFL, and some have some very interesting facts attached to them:

1900 - Melbourne provided St Kilda's only win in the opening round. It was St Kilda's first win since joining the league, won on protest after the game was declared a draw and the first example of the eventual wooden spooner defeating the eventual premier.
1901 - St Kilda's only victory is against Carlton, which finish second last.
1906 - Melbourne defeat South Melbourne for the red & blues' only win.
1910 - As was the case in 1901, St Kilda's only win for the season is against Carlton, but this is remarkable as this game was a top vs. bottom game played in the final round.
1911 - University defeat fellow-struggler St Kilda early in the season.
1912 - University's last win in the VFL comes in Round 3 1912 at the expense of Richmond at the MCG. The Tigers provided University with its first win in the VFL in Round 2 1908.
1927 - Hawthorn wait until Round 15 to bring up their first win of the season, defeating North Melbourne.
1929 - Footscray are the only victims of North Melbourne during an abysmal season for the Kangaroos.
1930 - The Great Depression proves even more depressing for North, who beat home only St Kilda this season.
1935 - The Bulldogs seemingly learned little from their 1929 defeat, again being the only side to be trumped by North Melbourne in Round 16 to end a long losing streak dating back to 1933 for the Kangaroos.
1942 - The good news? Hawthorn defeat Collingwood for the first time since entering the VFL in 1925. The bad news? It is Hawthorn's only win for the season.
1943 - What is it with Carlton & 1 win St Kilda teams? The Blues are the only team to lose to the Saints, who as bottom team are relegated from the league mid-season in this war-affected season.
1944 - Geelong struggle after returning from 2 years of recess due to wartime travel restrictions, winning only once against Hawthorn.
1947 - St Kilda pip North Melbourne by 2-points, giving the Saints their only victory of the season.
1951 - Carlton find a 1 win team different to St Kilda to lose to when they provide Melbourne's only victory of the season.
1955 - Amid many heavy thrashings for the season, St Kilda manage to win 1 game - a tight victory over North Melbourne.
1963 - Fitzroy's only win is against top team and eventual premier Geelong in Round 10. Lions' captain-coach Kevin Murray, away with the state team, misses his team's only victory in 1963 & 1964.
1966 - Looking at another winless season to emulate 1964, Fitzroy manage to defeat Footscray by a goal late in the season and go 1-17.
1972 - North Melbourne beat the also-struggling South Melbourne Swans for the Kangaroos' only win of 1972.
1981 - Melbourne avoid being the first team to go winless since 1964 by a single point - their margin of victory over 2-20 Footscray in Round 3.
1993 - The Sydney Swans end a 26-game losing streak with a comfortable win over Melbourne at the SCG in Round 13. The Demons had the previous week beaten top team and eventual premier Essendon, and in something of an irony Swans coach Ron Barassi was Melbourne's 1981 coach.
1996 - Fitzroy's only 4 points of 1996 - their last ever win in the AFL - comes at the expense of the Fremantle Dockers, who from this point on develop a habit of losing to wooden spoon teams.
2013 - Twenty years after losing to a 1 win Sydney based team, Melbourne do it again when they go down to the GWS Giants.

Trend continues with Mitchell and Cotchin tying for votes in 2012 :p

This stat perhaps shows how much the way football has changed over the past 2-3 decades. In 2014, the Sydney Swans topped the ladder with a 17-5 record and a points for of 2126. The Sydney Swans' 1991 team finished a lowly 12th of 15 teams (7-14-1) but had a points for of 2360.

The Swans seem to have a habit of enigmatic scoring. Their 1991 team is a good example. They were involved in the highest scoring match of the season against North Melbourne in Round 6 producing an aggregate score of 322 (Kangaroos 27.26-188 d Swans 21.8-134) then in Round 12 were in the lowest scoring match of the year, drawing against the Bulldogs at the Western Oval with final scores of Bulldogs 4.11-35 to Swans 5.5-35, an aggregate of just 70 points.

Even more remarkable is the effort of the 1962 Swans team. Despite being the wooden spooner of 1962, South Melbourne kicked the biggest score of the season in an unusually high scoring game against Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval, the Swans winning over the Lions 22.11-143 to 17.16-118. However, the Swans also kicked 1962's lowest score, managing an abysmal 1.11-17 against Melbourne's 8.15-63 at the MCG.

If young West Coast Eagle Tom Barrass fails to play another AFL game, he will become just the 7th 3 game player to have a career of 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss.

The others are Ian O'Halloran (Cats), Lloyd Brewer (Tigers), Ron Kennedy (Bombers), Ron Ellis (Saints), Alby Williams (Kangaroos) and Willis Hardy (Blues).

Here are some things that have not happened in the AFL for 5 years or more. I wonder if any of them will happen in 2016?

Reigning Premier Misses Finals - Last case is Hawthorn, which finished 9th in 2009 after winning the premiership over Geelong in 2008.

Runner Up Misses Finals - After getting nowhere near Geelong in the 2007 Grand Final (to put it mildly), Port Adelaide got nowhere near the finals in 2008.

Team Rises from Wooden Spoon to Finalist - The West Coast Eagles finished bottom in 2010, but rebounded strongly to qualify for the 2011 finals series.

Team Falls from Finalists to Wooden Spooner - The Brisbane Lions endured a horrible second season in 1998, falling from the 1997 finals to last position.

Bottom Team Beats Top Team - In Round 9 2005 Collingwood, last with only 1 win, inflicted the first defeat of the season on top team the West Coast Eagles.

Wooden Spooner Defeats Premier - This last happened in 1992, when the Sydney Swans upset the West Coast Eagles early that season.

Leading Goal-kicker From Wooden Spoon Team - Brendan Fevola was the last player to achieve this in 2006 for Carlton.

Brownlow Medalist From Wooden Spoon Team - Only two players have done this, the most recent being Col Austen from Hawthorn back in 1949.

300 Point Match Aggregate - The last game to produce such high scoring was a 24.12-156 to 22.13-145 victory by North Melbourne over the Bulldogs in 2003. This is only the 3rd game from 2000 onwards to have an aggregate score greater than 300.

Side Goes Winless - The last winless team was Fitzroy, with the Lions failing to record a single victory in 1964.

Hawthorn's last six premierships have been against non-Melbourne based teams:

2015: West Coast
2014: Sydney
2013: Fremantle
2008: Geelong
1991: West Coast
1989: Geelong

Teams which have played more than once against another team in a Grand Final without winning:

Collingwood v North Melbourne (1977 Draw, 1977 (Replay) Loss)
Geelong v West Coast (1992 Loss, 1994 Loss)
Collingwood v Brisbane Lions (2002 Loss, 2003 Loss)
West Coast v Hawthorn (1991 Loss, 2015 Loss)

Some more things that have not happened in the AFL for 5 years or more:

Both Grand Finalists Miss Finals Next Year - Last case was 1963, with Essendon finishing 5th and Carlton 6th to miss Final Four.

Grand Final With No Victorian Team - Last case was 2006 with West Coast v Sydney.

Team Outside of Top Four Makes Grand Final - Last team was Carlton in 1999 who made the Grand Final from 6th place (in original version of Final Eight).

100 Goals in a Season - Last player to kick 100 goals in a season was Buddy Franklin in 2008.

Brownlow Medalist Plays in Premiership Team - Last player was Gary Ablett Jr at Geelong in 2009.

Key Position Player Wins Brownlow Medal - Last player was Tony Lockett in 1987.

Norm Smith Medalist Comes From Losing Team - Last player was Chris Judd at West Coast in 2005.

Team Kicks Only 1 Goal For The Game - Fremantle scored 1.7.13 against Adelaide in Round 15 of 2009.

Here are some enigmatic statistics from Melbourne over the years:

  • Melbourne have the player to kick the highest number of goals in a game (18 by Fred Fanning 1947), the fastest player to 100 goals (Allen Jakovich 1991-1992) and share the record for the highest number of goals in a quarter (8 by Harry Davie 1925), but have never boasted a century goal-kicker.
  • Melbourne's Fred Fanning has the most accurate score by an individual when he scored 18.1 against St Kilda in 1947, but a Melbourne player also has the most inaccurate score (shared with Richmond's Tom Allen in 1949) when Stewart Spencer scored 0.11 against Geelong in 1956.
  • Melbourne have the highest score where no player kicks more than 1 goal (12.12-84 vs. North Melbourne in the 1998 Preliminary Final) and the highest score where an individual kicks all the team goals, when Arthur Best kicked the entire Melbourne score of 5.5-35 against South Melbourne in Round 18 1914.
  • Melbourne played in the games with the highest aggregate score of 345 (St K. 31.18-204 d. Melb 21.15-141 in 1978) and the game with the lowest match aggregate of 22 (Ess 1.8-14 d. Melb 0.8-8 in 1897).
  • Despite playing in the highest scoring game of all time, and the only two games prior to 1976 that produced a 300 point match aggregate (305 Melb 22.19-151 v Geel 24.10-154 in 1940, and Melb 18.9-117 to Rich 30.16-196 in 1942), Melbourne have never kicked a 200-point score or 30 goals in a game.

They've also conceded the highest 2 margins in VFL/AFL history and it took until 2007 (110 years after the start of the 1897 VFL Season) for the first Dee to get to 300 games. (David Neitz.)

Their ( Melbourne ) last premiership was nearly the biggest choke / upset of all time - if they had lost it would have been ( which they very nearly did - required a back pocket player to kick a goal to get them over the line in the dying seconds )

Second Semi Final Melbourne 19 20 134 def Collingwood 6 9 45

Grand Final Melb 8 16 def Coll 8 12

I can remember 1965 as a kid - they won their opening 8 games - they then got unexpectantly flogged by StKilda - then every bumm team in the comp beat them - and basically theve been no good for 50 years - maybe its a 50 year curse - lets hope it is for their supporters sake

Here are even more stats that have not occurred in the AFL for 5 years or more, and are very unlikely to occur:

A footballer arrives for training in a helicopter ~ last instance was 1981

A footballer arrives to play in a helicopter ~ last instance was 1973

The MCG scoreboard catches fire ~ last instance 1999

A naked streaker at the grand final ~ last instance 1988

The bat-mobile appears on the field of play ~ last instance 1991

Curious if my sense of these events is close to what happened.

A footballer arrives for training in a helicopter ~ last instance was 1981

Brian Peake to Geelong.

A footballer arrives to play in a helicopter ~ last instance was 1973

Peter Hudson before my time.

The MCG scoreboard catches fire ~ last instance 1999

He he
Remember this as was there and heard the big bang and wondered what it was.
Had to go out on field for some time and start of game delayed as a result.

A naked streaker at the grand final ~ last instance 1988

Don't remember it happening as such a forgettable grand final and worst grand final at the time.
Bloody was in shitty mood as felt my team should have been there but injuries killed us at worst time.

The bat-mobile appears on the field of play ~ last instance 1991

Angry Anderson at the 1991 grand final at Waverley Park.

A footballer breaks a goalpost ~ last instance 1982

Leigh Matthews no doubt at Windy Hill versus Essendon.

An umpire takes a mark ~ last instance 1999

Only really remember it was a game at Subiao but do not remember the umpire.
Got kicked right in his direction and could not avoid taking it on instinct.

A pig enters the field of play ~ last instance 1993

haha
On the field at SCG on a Sunday of Swans v St.Kilda.
Ironically before Plugger went to Swans to play.
He would have killed the guy that did it if he found it at the time.

Your sense of these events is quite accurate.
Leigh Matthews breaking the goalpost was round 18, 1982.
The umpire taking the mark was Peter Carey in his 299th match, a contest between Fremantle and St Kilda at Subiaco in round 15, 1999.
The pig on the field was round 18, 1993.
Having now double checked with Wikipedia, there actually was also a streaker at the 1989 Grand Final.

Some more stats that have not occurred in the AFL for 5 years or more, and are very unlikely to occur:

A player receives a premiership medal after sitting on the interchange bench for the whole Grand Final - last instance was 1981

A player is a late withdrawal from a finals match after missing the team bus to the game - last instance was also 1981

A player misses the Grand Final after being hit by a truck on the Thursday before the game - last instance was 1935

Not so much a statistic as a coincidence (and apologies if it seems morbid) but when the Brisbane Lions drafted Josh Schache this week I remembered how his father Laurence, a Brisbane Bears player from 1991 & 1992, died prematurely of amyloidosis at the age of 34 in 2002.

However, Laurence Schache is not the only Brisbane Bears player to die prematurely. Also deceased are Phil Walsh (alleged homicide at the age of 55 in 2015); Brent Green (drowned at sea off the Gold Coast in 2009 aged 33); Robert Dickson (died in car accident in 2009 at age 45) and Troy Clarke (died of brain aneurism in 2013 at age 44). For a club that was around just 10 years (and obviously having a limited number of players due to this), it is quite odd and sad that 5 of its players should die prematurely of a variety of reasons.

Sadly, yet another former Brisbane Bears player died today with the passing of Ken Judge from cancer at the age of 58.

Keeping with the 10's, 10 years after Fremantle's first AFL game, Gary Dhurrkay died in a car accident aged 28.

Of the expansion clubs, I can name only one player from each of the West Coast Eagles (Chris Mainwaring), Fremantle Dockers (Gary Dhurrkay) and Port Adelaide (John McCarthy) to have died, and none from the Adelaide Crows, Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns or GWS Giants (I'll stand corrected on any of these). Contrast this with 6 former Brisbane Bears to have passed on prematurely, and given the Bears' limited lifespan and therefore limited number of players, this is very sad.

I presume the first player would be Mario Bortolotto.
The great Bob Pratt would be the last mentioned.
Who is the player who missed the bus?
