Edit. 83 (different) players have won a Brownlow Medal. 37 of them are also Premiership players.

What would be interesting out of that list - re Premiership and Brownlow in the same year- is how many who achieved that - didnt win their Clubs Best and Fairest in the same year

Bartel and Keith Greig are 2 who come to mind

Are you just talking about this list - I'm a bit confused because Greig didn't win the Brownlow in a Premiership year, Bartel certainly did?

Hawthorn have had 5 premiership coaches - Alastair Clarkson (4), John Kennedy Sr (3), Allan Jeans (3), Allan Joyce (2) and David Parkin (1).

As players, all 5 were involved in wooden spoon teams:

Kennedy - 1950 (his first year) and 1953 with Hawthorn
Jeans - 1955 (his first year) with St. Kilda
Parkin - 1965 with Hawthorn
Joyce - 1965 (his last year) with Hawthorn
Clarkson - 1997 (his last year) with Melbourne

Of the 5, Parkin was the only one involved in a premiership as player - captaining Hawthorn to its win in 1971.

Kennedy, Jeans, Parkin and Joyce all coached other clubs after winning premierships with Hawthorn:

Kennedy - North Melbourne
Jeans - Richmond (and also coached St.Kilda before Hawthorn)
Parkin - Carlton (two stints) and Fitzroy
Joyce - Footscray/Western Bulldogs

Parkin was the only one to have any great success after Hawthorn - coaching Carlton to 3 premierships from 5 grand finals.

I have no doubt that Clarkson will be in demand from other clubs whenever his coaching career at Hawthorn finishes. Whether he decides to take up an offer and coach elsewhere is another matter.

Premiership teams that won their Round 1 match by 60 points or more:

104 points - Hawthorn (v Melbourne) 2008
98 points - Port Adelaide (v Essendon) 2004
94 points - Fitzroy (v Carlton) 1904
94 points - Essendon (v Port Adelaide) 2000
79 points - Hawthorn (v Melbourne) 1978
76 points - St. Kilda (v Melbourne) 1966
74 points - Essendon (v University) 1912
66 points - Richmond (v St. Kilda) 1932
63 points - Essendon (v Hawthorn) 1949
63 points - Sydney (v Hawthorn) 2005
63 points - Sydney (v GWS) 2012
62 points - Carlton (v Richmond) 1981
62 points - Hawthorn (v Geelong) 2015
60 points - North Melb (v Hawthorn) 1977

Sydney (80), Western Bulldogs (65), West Coast (64) and Gold Coast (61) all started 2016 with a 60+ point win.

Not sure if covered on this board before (or whether this is the right thread haha) but how many Brownlow + Premiership players have there been in VFL/AFL history?

At the other end of the scale, wooden spoon teams have produced just two Brownlow Medalists. These are Wilfred Smallhorn from Fitzroy in 1936, and Hawthorn's Colin Austin in 1949.

If the infamous 1899 Geelong vs. St Kilda game that resulted in a 23.24-162 to 0.1-1 win to Geelong had taken place in the first round of the season instead of the last, the Cats would have had a percentage of 162,000 while the Saints percentage would have been 0.62.

Fitzroy finished 5th in 1933 when Wilfred Smallhorn won his Brownlow Medal. The other player to win a Brownlow Medal in a wooden spoon team was Smallhorn's team mate Denis "Dinny" Ryan who was the 1936 winner.

My mistake, I always thought Smallhorn was Fitzroy's 1936 Brownlow Medalist, maybe because a unique name like Wilfred 'Chicken' Smallhorn tends to stay in the mind more than a name like Denis Ryan.

In any case, some of Fitzroy's wooden spoon teams certainly some interesting feats. Most famously, the Lions' last placed team won all its finals in a war-affected, 4 team competition in 1916 to take out the premiership over Carlton; Denis Ryan won the 1936 Brownlow; Fitzroy's only win in 1963 was over top team and eventual premier Geelong and in 1980 the 12th-placed Lions had a greater points for than minor premiers the Cats.

Fitzroy had a history of producing Brownlow Medalists with distinctive nicknames.

Apart from Wilfred 'Chicken' Smallhorn and Denis 'Dinny' Ryan, it also had Alan 'the Baron' Ruthven, Kevin 'Bulldog' Murray and Bernie 'Superboot' Quinlan win Brownlows.

The only Fitzroy winner without a distinctive nickname was 3-time winner Haydn Bunton. The best he could do was name his son after himself, thus becoming Haydn Bunton Senior.

It's a long time until the AFL Grand Final, but I thought it would be interesting to list the last time each Grand Final combination took place. Will this year's GF be contested by two teams who haven't met in the last game of the season for some years, or who have never met on GF day?

The problem with this is that there are so many of them when you count the interstate teams that have joined over the past 30 years and the long term lack of success for a number of Victoria teams.

Anyway, among the foundation clubs, there have been no Grand Final match ups between Carlton & Melbourne, Carlton & St Kilda, Melbourne & Geelong, Melbourne & Swans, Geelong & Swans and St Kilda & Swans. There was also no Grand Final between Geelong & Fitzroy. Richmond (admitted 1908) has met all of the foundation teams including Fitzroy in a Grand Final at least once with the exception of St Kilda. Of the 1925 entrants, GF appearances for the Bulldogs have been few and far between with just two when they met Melbourne in 1954 and Hawthorn in 1961. North Melbourne have also made limited number of appearances in Grand Finals over the years, but have met Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn and Richmond, with other GF appearances against Adelaide and Sydney. Hawthorn are obviously the most experienced of the 1925 entrants. Of the Victorian teams, they never played Fitzroy in a Grand Final, have never played Richmond in any final and most amazingly have never played off against Collingwood for the premiership. No Hawthorn and Collingwood GF is perhaps the most surprising given that from 1975-1991 inclusive every GF except 1982 contained either Hawthorn or Collingwood but never Hawthorn and Collingwood.

With St. Kilda scoring only 5.6 (36) versus Western Bulldogs last night, I was curious whether Nick Riewoldt had experienced the lowest team score by any player in his 300th game. Turns out that record is held by Adam Simpson from round 12, 2009 when North Melbourne scored only 3.6 (24) versus Adelaide, leaving Riewoldt in second place.
Nor is St Kilda's losing margin of 57 points is the largest for any player in his 300th game. That record is jointly held by Barry Breen and Shannon Grant whose teams lost by 76 points.
The highest team score for a player in his 300th game is 28.12 (180) for Paul Williams in round 7, 2006. Sydney's winning margin of 118 points also gives Williams the highest winning margin for a player in his 300th game, whilst Carlton won by 107 points in Bruce Doull's 300th game.

Melbourne's 17 Grand Finals are interesting with 7 being against Collingwood and 6 against Essendon. The only other foundation club they have met in a Grand Final was Fitzroy in 1900. The other 3 are against Richmond, Footscray and Hawthorn.

Geelong's 17 Grand Finals also show a strange mix of opponents. Of the foundation clubs, they have met Collingwood 6 times, Essendon once (in 1951), Carlton once (in 1995) and St.Kilda once (in 2009). They have never met Fitzroy, Melbourne or Swans. Nearly half their Grand Finals have been against "later entrants" - Hawthorn 3 times, Richmond twice, West Coast twice and Port Adelaide once.

An interesting observation about Nic Naitanui.

Although he is well known for his mark of the year contenders, he actually doesn't take many marks. How many is not many?

Well of the 62 West Coast players who have played 100+ games, Nic Naitanui ranks dead last for marks per game.

Rank - Player - Marks per game
1 Kennedy, Josh 6.35
2 Waters, Beau 6.07
3 Lynch, Quinten 5.39
...
60 Turnbull, Ryan 2.36
61 Chick, Daniel 2.22
62 Naitanui, Nic 1.91

But what happens when we look at contested marks? Then he jumps to 3rd highest!*

Rank - Player - Contested Marks per game
1 Kennedy, Josh 1.54
2 Darling, Jack 1.3
3 Naitanui, Nic 1.24
4 Gehrig, Fraser 1.1
5 Lynch, Quinten 1.07

*contested mark stat only kept since 1999

First time since R22 1998 that North Melbourne finished a round on top of the ladder.
First time since R22 1998 that North Melbourne and Footscray finished a round top 2 on the ladder and in that order.
First time since R22 1998 that North Melbourne, Footscray and Sydney 1,2 and 3 on top of the ladder and in that order.

First time since R4 2003 that North Melbourne and Fremantle kicked triple digits in the same game.

Also, some records in the GWS vs Port Adelaide game that will be noted in the next post.

Some records fell on the GWS and Port Adelaide game, none of which will flatter Port Adelaide.

GWS' record quarter time score of 42-19.
GWS' record half time score of 94-33. (In turn their highest ever half time margin.)
GWS' record 3 quarter time score of 114-48.
GWS' record full time score of 151-65.

With GWS kicking a score of 151, this was the first time Port Adelaide conceded a score of 150+ vs both Gold Coast or GWS.

Also, Port Adelaide conceded its highest margin and score against a particular side for the first side since Hawthorn (R21 2011 where they not only conceded a score of 197, which is the highest score Port Adelaide has ever conceded but also their highest conceded margin ever.)

Also, the GWS Port Adelaide game was the first time a score pairing of 151-65 was recorded.

Yesterday, Melbourne beat Collingwood by 35 points.

The same number former Pie Ben Kennedy wears at Melbourne and who played yesterday.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Howe, who went the other way, who wears No. 38, had his number doubled and swapped giving us 67, Collingwood's score.

If the infamous 1899 Geelong vs. St Kilda game that resulted in a 23.24-162 to 0.1-1 win to Geelong had taken place in the first round of the season instead of the last, the Cats would have had a percentage of 162,000 while the Saints percentage would have been 0.62.
