A few other players were older at their last game when they changed clubs. Not sure of the circumstances of some, whether traded or simply let go.

John Rantall 35y266d Sy -> Fi 1979-80 (330 games - makes Mitchell the third most-experienced player to change clubs)
Doug Hawkins 34y122d WB -> Fi 1994-94 as mentioned
Alex Jesaulenko 34y58d Ca -> St 1979-80 as mentioned
Mick Martyn 34y8d NM -> Ca 2002-03 as mentioned
Johnny Lewis 33y359d NM -> Me 1935-36
Sam Mitchell 33y340d Ha -> WC 2016-17

The following players returned at a new club after a break of one or more seasons:

Syd Barker Snr 36y292d Es -> NM 1924/1927
George Haines 33y360d Me -> St 1925/1927

Len Thompson changed clubs again after 288 games.

Dean Brogan and Ben Hudson were also traded at 32yo.

Thanks Ron.
My first list I was going for 'one-club men' who left, hence why I omitted Rantall, Cloke, Osborne etc who moved multiple times.

I don't think any of those older players were traded as per the modern trade period with the draft.

In 2002, Brisbane became the first premiers to beat both South Australian teams in the same finals series (Runners-up Collingwood also beat Adelaide and Port Adelaide during the finals).

In 2015, Hawthorn became the first premiers to beat both Western Australian teams in the same finals series (Sydney beat West Coast and Fremantle in 2006 but lost to West Coast when they met for a second time in the Grand Final).

In 2016, Western Bulldogs became the first premiers to beat both NSW teams in the same finals series.

It is likely to be some time before a premiership team has the opportunity to beat both Queensland teams in the same finals series.

This year in the AFL, the Western Bulldogs defeated the Sydney Swans in the Grand Final. In the VFL, the Footscray Bulldogs were also premiers with victory over the Casey Scorpions, while in the NEAFL the Swans were also runners up, losing to the WSU Giants (GWS Giants affiliate) by 4 points.

University played just 126 games from 1908-1914, but interestingly the same score was repeated in two University games in two seasons.

In Round 14 1912, University were beaten by Fitzroy by 36 points, the Lions winning 12.14-86 to 7.8-50. Then in Round 2 1914, University went down to Essendon 12.14-86 to 7.8-50, the red and blacks beating the blue and blacks by 36 points.

It is pretty strange that considering how many scoring combinations are possible that a club should repeat a scoreline in such a short period of time. Does anyone know of any other instances like that of University?

8 clubs have recorded exact (i.e. goals and behinds) for and against scores three times:

Carlton 9.12.66 v 7.12.54 (1935 Me, 1969 St, 1992 Ha)
Collingwood 14.12.96 v 15.11.101 (1946 Ca, 1972 Ha, 1983 Ge)
Geelong 11.13.79 v 18.12.120 (1941 Es, 2010 Co, 2015 NM)
Richmond 14.8.92 v 10.9.69 (1957 Ge, 1965 Ca, 1996 Co)
Richmond 14.11.95 v 9.15.69 (1919 Ca, 1976 Me, 1995 St)
St.Kilda 11.9.75 v 16.12.108 (1974 Ha, 1983 Me, 2010 Es)
Sydney 10.13.73 v 13.16.94 (1931 Co, 1956 Fi, 1962 Fi)
Fitzroy 10.12.72 v 9.7.61 (1909 Co, 1911 Co, 1960 Es)

(NB The difference of 791 days in the above Fi v Co example is the shortest period [from 18 instances] between repeating scores involving the same winner & loser.)

There are a further 514 instances of scores being repeated once.

The shortest times between repeated scores are:

Western Bulldogs' premiership this season means that of the 12 traditional clubs, St. Kilda is the only one who has not been crowned premier in a leap year.

Carlton (3) 1908, 1968, 1972
Collingwood (2) 1928, 1936
Essendon (4) 1912, 1924, 1984, 2000
Fitzroy (3) 1904, 1916, 1944
Footscray/Bulldogs (1) 2016
Geelong (1) 1952
Hawthorn (3) 1976, 1988, 2008
Melbourne (5) 1940, 1948, 1956, 1960, 1964
North Melbourne (1) 1996
Richmond (3) 1920, 1932, 1980
South/Sydney (1) 2012

The other two clubs to be leap year premiers are West Coast (1992) and Port Adelaide (2004).

2016 has been one of the strangest year of sports results in Australia and world history as follows:

AFL
  • Western Bulldogs win their first premiership since 1954, winning from 7th position on the ladder over the 1st placed Sydney Swans
  • Essendon are wooden spooners for the first time since 1933
  • A Richmond player is awarded the Brownlow Medal for the first time since 1971, when Trent Cotchin (Tigers) and Sam Mitchell (Hawks) are announced winners of the 2012 medal following the surrender of the award by original winner Jobe Watson from Essendon.

VFL
  • The Footscray Bulldogs overcome a 70-point thrashing from the Casey Scorpions in the Qualifying Final to comfortably defeat the same team in the GF three weeks later.

TAC CUP
  • None of the top 3 make the GF, with 5th placed Sandringham Dragons defeating 4th placed Murray Bushrangers in the premiership decider

WAFL
  • Peel take advantage of the much-maligned Fremantle Dockers alignment, and in a farcical finals series win the WAFL premiership (their first) from the Elimination Final with a side that was practically a Fremantle reserves team.
  • The high-scoring Claremont Tigers have the third best percentage in the league, but finish well outside the finals due to many narrow losses.
SANFL
  • Sturt, second last in 2015 and without a flag since 2002, storm up the ladder and over-power hot favorites the WWT Eagles in the SANFL GF. West Adelaide, the 2015 premiers, fall to last with just 2 wins in 2016.
NEAFL
  • The Sydney Swans completely dominate the 2016 NEAFL season as evidenced by a percentage of more than 200, but have to be content with a runner-up position when upset by the UWS Giants in the NEAFL GF.
NRL
  • The Cronulla Sharks win their first senior premiership since their inception in 1967.
SUPER RUGBY
  • The Wellington Hurricanes, the only NZ team without a title to date, finally break through with a win over the Johannesburg Lions, a side that has been an easy beat for many years.
A LEAGUE
  • Adelaide United are last by a fair margin early in the season, but recover to climb the ladder and take out the A League Grand Final.
PREMIER LEAGUE
  • Leicester City, a team tipped for relegation to the Championship, instead win the Premier League.
NBA
  • Golden State Warriors win the title for the first time since 1967
WORLD SERIES
  • The Chicago Cubs, without a World Series appearance since 1945 and a title since 1908, win the World Series from a seemingly beaten position over the Cleveland Indians, themselves without a World Series victory since 1948

GSW fans thought they won the title, their last three games in the series were all losses however.

They did have the greatest regular season record though. Whilst Cavaliers won their first ever Championship after 47 years in the NBA.

When John Rantall played his 300th game in 1978, this was the first time South Melbourne had a player with 300 games experience playing for them, though of course Rantall's total included games played for North Melbourne. This trend continued for South/Sydney when Barry Round played his 300th in 1983 (previous games with Footscray), and then Paul Roos in 1996 (former Fitzroy) and Paul Williams in 2006 (former Collingwood). It wasn't until Michael O'Loughlin played his 300th game in 2009 that South/Sydney at last had a 300 game player who had played all 300 with the club. Similar circumstances occurred at
North Melbourne when Gary Dempsey played his 300th there in 1982, with his total including games played for Footscray. Likewise at Brisbane when Roger Merrett played his 300th game there in 1996, (formerly Essendon), and when Gavin Wanganeen played his 300th at Port Adelaide in 2006 (formerly Essendon) and also when Luke Power played his 300th at GWS in 2012 (formerly Brisbane Lions).
Next season, when Sam Mitchell and Drew Petrie line up with West Coast, it will be the first time a club has two 300 game players in its line up without that club having its own 300 game player.

4 2010 Collingwood (3 wins, 1 draw)
4 2015 Hawthorn (3 wins, 1 loss)
4 2016 Western Bulldogs (4 wins)

This would have been the first time ever that both grand finalists played every week of the finals series.

I was looking through some of the VFA seasons on the Australian Football website to see some of the records of bad teams in this league (these are mind-boggling BTW) and came across an interesting stat for the former VFA club Oakleigh.

In 1992, Oakleigh (which finished last with only 1 win) twice lost a game 23.11-149 to 8.12-60, against Werribee in Round 5 and Box Hill in Round 11.

I don't know of any other instances of teams at high level football having the same scoreline in the same year like the Devils' 1992 team.

Think I might've posted this before in a different thread or board, and it doesn't feature games for Premiership points, but...

In 1973 the Bulldogs beat the Hawks in a pre-season practice match at the Western Oval
- by 1 point, 13.14 92 to 14.7 91
Post season that same year, the same two sides travelled to Manuka in the ACT and played an exhibition match there, which the Dogs again won
- by 1 point, 13.14 92 to 13.13 91

Now that Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn) and Trent Cotchin (Richmond) have been officially awarded the 2012 Brownlow Medal following the surrender of the award by Essendon's Jobe Watson, it creates some amazing statistics as follows:

1. Trent Cotchin's win breaks the longest Brownlow drought for a club, with no Richmond player having won the award since Ian Stewart in 1971.
2. Ben Cousins played for Richmond as a Brownlow Medalist in 2009 & 2010, but won the award for the West Coast Eagles in 2005, the same club Sam Mitchell has just joined.
3. North Melbourne now have the longest Brownlow drought, with no Kangaroo winning since Ross Glendenning in 1983. Glendenning later left the Kangaroos to play for the West Coast Eagles, the same team Sam Mitchell has now joined.
4. A North Melbourne player, Corey McKernan, tied the 1996 count with Brisbane Bear Michael Voss and Essendon's James Hird, but was ineligible to win due to a suspension. Following the change in 2012 Brownlow Medalists, James Hird now becomes Essendon's most recent Brownlow Medalist, with Voss the only player to ever win a Brownlow as a Bear.
5. Col Austen, Hawthorn's 1949 Brownlow winner who was awarded the award retrospectively years later left Hawthorn before the start of the 1950 season to join Richmond.
6. Assuming that Mitchell plays at least one game for West Coast and does not win a Brownlow at the Eagles, West Coast will have two Brownlow Medalists who won their awards at other teams (Glendenning and Mitchell); two who left the Eagles and played for other teams (Judd and Cousins) and one who (to date) has only played at the Eagles in Matt Priddis.
7. Hawthorn and Richmond's first Brownlow Medalists, Col Austen and Stan Judkins, shared the award with other players in 1949 and 1930 respectively.
8. Sam Mitchell holds the record for the most votes by an ineligible player, polling 30 in 2011.
9. Hawthorn now have five Brownlow Medalists - Col Austen (1949), Robert Dipierdomenico (1986), John Platten (1987), Shane Crawford (1999) and Sam Mitchell (2012), but only Crawford has won in his own right. The others tied with Ron Clegg (Swans), Greg Williams (Swans), Tony Lockett (St Kilda) and Trent Cotchin (Richmond) respectively.
10. Completing the Tigers/Hawks/Saints/Swans Brownlow sharing, the Tigers' 1971 winner Ian Stewart won 2 Brownlow Medals at St Kilda in 1965 & 1966.

At the start of 2016, the most number of VFL/AFL premierships won was 16 - shared by Carlton and Essendon.

In 2016, Essendon won the wooden spoon (breaking the then longest wooden spoon drought of 83 years) after Carlton won it in 2015.

At the start of 2016, the least number of VFL/AFL premierships won (of those teams to win a premiership) was 1 - shared by Western Bulldogs, St.Kilda and Port Adelaide.

In 2016, Western Bulldogs won the premiership, breaking the then longest premiership drought of 62 years.

The Brisbane Bears presumably did not enjoy trips to Moorabbin to play St Kilda in the early 1990s, the Saints humiliating the Bears by margins of 120 and 108 points at this venue in 1991 & 1992 respectively.

The match played in Round 23 1991 saw a 27.12-174 to 7.12-54 victory by St Kilda over Brisbane, with the scoreline in Round 10 1992 25.18-168 to 9.6-60.

When you look at these scores, the Saints scored two goals less and six behinds more from one game to the next (27.12 to 25.18), while the Bears scored two goals more and six points less (7.12 to 9.6).

What makes these games even more remarkable is that the way they played out was almost the opposite. In the 1991 match, Brisbane gave St Kilda no end of trouble in the first half, the gallant Bears behind by only 10 points deep in time on in the second quarter before the Saints scored 3 quick goals to take a more comfortable but far from match-winning 28-point lead into half time. Then in the second half, St Kilda demolished Brisbane with 17 goals to 2, the Saints leading by 81 by three quarter time and by 120 at the final siren. The 1992 game saw St Kilda blitz Brisbane early and open up a 13 goal lead by half time, but the Saints slacked off in the second half and the Bears were able to fight out the match before going under by 108-points.
