Melbourne's 1919 team was one of the poorest on record, the Demons going winless upon returning after the First World War but one of the players from this team holds a unique record.

This player, Harry Selover, managed 3 games for the red & blues for 2 goals in a fleeting VFL career. However, he is the only AFL/VFL player to have lived in 3 centuries, born on 24th July 1898 and dying on 18th May 2001.

I wonder if any of the young AFL players & rookies born in the late 1990s will still be around in the early 2100s to emulate this unique statistic?

There was more than a handful of articles outlining this kind of phenomenon of the ultra-old just being motivated enough to kind of 'stay up for the game' and make the magic 'Three centuries' club, i think statistically a greater number of centenarians happened as those born in the late 1890's hung around to see what mayhem Y2K might bring. Upon reaching that rubicon i think the death rates normalised for those of such an advanced age. I'm pretty sure if i was relatively cogent and on the cusp of something like that i'd have that little thing in my mind to make it as well, it's an amazing stat, open to not too many people.

Suffice to say, only posters roughly 20 y/o now will have a chance to kind of verify this come 2100, i doubt i'll be reaching 132 y/o to check for anyone on here!! Or whatever form the Bigfooty forum may look like by then. Are there any Bigfooty forum members that started in 1999 themselves?

I will be long dead by the 2100s, but maybe if Big Footy is still around in 2100 some statistics fan not even born yet will quote my post if one of the young players born in the late 1990s by that stage over 100 years old enters his 3rd century of existence. And with people living longer, it is definitely possible. However, I remember reading in an old edition of the Guiness Book of Records that a woman in England was born about 1792 and died in about 1904. I don't think too many people would have lived in the 18th, 19th & 20th centuries.

Don't forget, technically, the next century will begin in 2101, not 2100. Any people who were members of Big Footy in 2000, not just 1999, would also have been a member during the 20th century.

Love was all around in two matches played in 1988 & 1991.

In Round 12 1988 the Melbourne vs. North Melbourne game at the MCG featured Andy Lovell and Brett Lovett for the Demons, and Jason Love for the Kangaroos.

The game between the Sydney Swans and Melbourne at the SCG in Round 15 1991 saw Jason Love playing for the Swans, while Brett Lovett and Glenn Lovett played for the Demons.

I'm not sure how many Demons games featured Andy Lovell, Brett Lovett and Glenn Lovett.

Lovell and the two Lovetts played about 65 games together from what I can see especially during 1992-93 and 1995, I think
AFL Tables - Melbourne (Game by Game) player list for each season helped me sort that out.

Thanks the Croucher - to quote 1970s pop star the late Nicolette Larsen, that's a lot a love.

I found another instance of Lovell and the two Lovett's playing in the same game together - Round 21 1996 between West Coast and Melbourne at Subiaco Oval. Lovell had by this time transferred to the Eagles, and Brett and Glenn Lovett were playing for the Demons that afternoon.

The Melbourne Lovetts/Lovell played 62 games together. Andy Lovell and Brett Lovett also played twice against Richard Loveridge.

Essendon had Andrew Lovett and Nathan Lovett-Murray, also for 62 games.

And Melbourne had Bob and Percy Love for 7 games in 1919.

Noel Lovell and Wally Lovett played six games together for Collingwood in 1982, including one against Richmond. Both were later "poached" by Richmond during the trade war, although they never played in the same team at Richmond.

Something I posted on Facebook the other day.

Combined margins for Dion Prestia's first 2 games at his 2 clubs.

-190 (Gold Coast 2011.)
+62 (Richmond 2017.)

Combined scores at both.

Gold Coast.

103 for.
293 against.

Richmond.

231 for.
169 against.

Average scores.

GC for = 51.5.
GC against = 146.5.

Rich for = 115.5.
Rich against = 84.5.

His club's first goalkickers for the season.

Gold Coast = Charlie Dixon. (First GC goalkicker ever.)
Richmond = Jason Castagna.

Totals.

For = 334.
Against = 462.

Fun fact: Both of his captains wear No. 9.

Also, his teammate Daniel Butler was in Year 9 at St Pats College in Ballarat while, for Richmond's 2nd game of Dion's first season, current teammate Jack Riewoldt was subbed out with the now famous concussion that saw him crawl out from the race.

Something else to consider.

Last time Richmond were 2-0, that was 4 years ago and their winning score in that 2nd game vs STK, 99 just like tonight.

Melbourne & Essendon have won both matches with a combined margin of 52 points. They are 4th & 6th with West Coast (+62) splitting them. Obligatory obscure follow-up: when has this happened before? Same win-loss and points difference, but not contiguous on the ladder.
Also, St Kilda & Hawthorn have lost both matches with a combined margin of 49 points. They are 13th & 14th.

Already during rounds 1 and 2 there have been a number of deficits of 20 or greater which have been wiped out.

ROUND 1
  • 47: Gold Coast trailed Brisbane Lions by 47 points at the 24 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They drew level at the 13 minute mark of the 4th quarter, but lost by 2 points.
  • 26: Collingwood trailed Western Bulldogs by 26 points at the 6 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They hit the front at the 2 minute mark of the 3rd quarter but lost by 14 points.
  • 24: Melbourne trailed St Kilda by 24 points at the 6 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They hit the front at the 17 minute mark of the 2nd quarter and won by 30 points.
  • 20: Adelaide trailed GWS by 20 points at the 2 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They hit the front at the 24 minute mark of the 2nd quarter and won by 56 points.

ROUND 2
  • 42: Brisbane Lions trailed Essendon by 42 points at the 25 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They hit the front at the 1 minute mark of the 4th quarter, but lost by 27 points.
  • 32: Geelong trailed North Melbourne by 32 points at the 14 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. They hit the front at the 26 minute mark of the 4th quarter and won by 1 point.
  • 28: Sydney trailed Western Bulldogs by 28 points at the 25 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. They hit the front at the 11 minute mark of the 4th quarter but lost by 23 points. Earlier Western Bulldogs trailed Sydney by 23 points at the 17 minute mark of the 1st quarter and hit the front for the first time at the 4 minute mark of the 2nd quarter.
  • 25: Adelaide trailed Hawthorn by 25 points at the 18 minute mark of the 1st quarter. They hit the front at the 11 minute mark of the 3rd quarter and won by 24 points.
  • 25: West Coast trailed St Kilda by 25 points at the 26 minute mark of the 1st quarter. They hit the front at the 20 minute mark of the 4th quarter and won by 19 points.
  • 24: Carlton trailed Melbourne by 24 points at the minute mark of the 13 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. They hit the front at the 14 minute mark of the 3rd quarter but lost by 22 points.

Hawthorn have been having a tricky time holding onto leads in the past four games.

Round 2, 2017: they led Adelaide by 25 points at the 18 minute mark of the 1st quarter but lost by 24.
Round 1, 2017: they led Essendon by 13 points at the 17 minute mark of the 3rd quarter but lost by 25.
semi final, 2016: they led Western Bulldogs by 23 points at the 15 minute mark of the 2nd quarter but lost by 23.
qualifying final, 2016: they led Geelong by 17 points at the 21 minute mark of the 3rd quarter but lost by 2 points.

Just prior to this, in their round 22 game versus Collingwood, they led by 18 points at the 16 minute mark of the 4th quarter and only won by 1 point.

Doesn't that situation also fit Richmond and West Coast, who have won both matches this season with a combined margin of 62 points, and are 3th & 5th on the ladder? As for when/if it's happened in the past, not sure if I can answer that at the moment.

Edit: I've only done a "manual check" so I can't be certain that I haven't missed any, but (working backwards) the most recent time this phenomenon occurred was Round 1 2010. There were three games decided by 56 points, so 1st and 3rd (Hawthorn & Carlton - +56, 1 Win) and 14th and 16th (Richmond & Melbourne- -56, 1 Loss) meet the criteria.

Also, following Round 2 2003 Sydney were 4th and Adelaide 6th with 1 win, 1 loss and +48 points.

The furthest behind a player has been who has ended up winning the Coleman Medal is 32 by Tony Lockett in 1991. After 6 rounds, Lockett had not played a game due to injury. The leading goal kicker at that stage was Jason Dunstall on 32. Lockett kicked bags of 12, 10 and 12 in his first three games back and ended up winning the goal kicking at the end of the home and away season finishing with 118 goals to second placed Peter Sumich on 94.
Other sizeable deficits I have discovered are 21 by Jason Dunstall in 1989. After 9 rounds he trailed Lockett by 49 goals to 70 but ended up taking the Coleman by 128 to Lockett in second place on 78, whose season was again curtailed by injury.
Bernie Quinlan was 19 behind Paul Salmon (20 to 39) after round 6 in 1984. An injury to Salmon put him out of the goal kicking race and Quinlan ended up taking the Coleman by 102 to 77 (Lockett) at season's end.
John Longmire also trailed by 19 goals in 1990 when he was behind Lockett 33 to 52 after round 8. Injuries upset another season for Lockett and Longmire ended up taking the Coleman by 98 to 84 (Peter Daicos).
During his record equalling season of 1971, Peter Hudson trailed Peter McKenna by 79 to 95 after round 14, but managed to lead the H & A goal kicking by 140 to 130, before equalling Bob Pratt's 150 during the finals.

I have by no means gone through every season, so there may be other significant deficits other goal kickers have overcome.

Can't believe I didn't see the Richmond / West Coast number! Thanks 35Daicos for that and the research
There's probably a fair few other examples from earlier years (which I didn't check), though it is something that's not going to happen that often. No doubt it's much more likely to occur earlier in the season when a lot of teams are lumped together on the same number of wins and losses.
