  5. No team has ever scored all its points in the third quarter, though five have scored only in the first quarter, two only in the second and two only in the last

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Richmond's team on Saturday night was its youngest winning combination since Round 10, 1969.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

If Geelong win next week and the Dogs lose (alternatively whenever the Dogs next lose if Geelong don't) then Bomber Thompson will equal the number of wins as a coach as Rodney Eade, after conceding 35 games in experience to him. Eade, currently on 156 wins as a coach is 2nd highest among the current coaches, behind of course Mick Malthouse.

Richmond's recent little run of wins also staves off the possibility of their overall record reaching 50%, which obviously it had been cartwheeling toward with their mediocre last three decades. The Tigers now have 1039 wins and 1005 losses, which to put it into context means that they are at least two 2-20 seasons away from reaching that. Hardwick may be the first coach in many years to start flipping that stat the other way if he keeps going like he has in the last few weeks.

Rogersresults would be able to tell definitively but if the Eagles, Lions and Port continue their recent lamentable form, Geelong may overtake their win/loss records and move to 4th of all sides overall on percentage, behind of course Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon in that order.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

There have been 11 occurrences of clubs being deadlocked on the ladder, unable to be separated by premiership points or percentage.

- eight of these occasions came about due to draws in Round 1, in 1911, 1914, 1915, 1917, 1921, 1933, 1957 and 1960
- in Round 1, 1966, two matches had scorelines of 115-62, resulting in two pairs of teams with the same points and percentage. This occurred again in Round 1, 1968, when two matches were decided 88-72
- the only time two clubs have been deadlocked after Round 1 was following Round 4, 1940 when Essendon and Geelong sat in equal 8th position, with two wins, 353 points for, 381 points against, and a percentage of 92.65 apiece

Geelong has a chance to overtake Port Adelaide but not West Coast this year.
(Geelong are already well ahead of Brisbane unless unlike the AFL, you count Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions as two separate clubs.)

If Geelong won all their remaining games (including 3 finals!) and Port Adelaide and West Coast lost all their remaining games, the standings would be:

West Coast 54.34%
Geelong 53.71%
Port Adelaide 52.92%

After that, each consecutive loss will drop West Coast by approx 0.09% and Port Adelaide by approx 0.16%. Each consecutive win however only gains Geelong approx 0.02%.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Looking at the ten completed minor round seasons from 2000 - 2009 there were only five instances where a team finished four or more games (i.e. >=16 points) higher than the team immediately below them on the ladder.

They were:

2000 Essendon 1st 84 pts [Carlton 2nd 64 pts]

2000 Collingwood 15th 28 pts [St.Kilda 16th 10 pts]

2007 Western Bulldogs 13th 38 pts [Melbourne 14th 20 pts]

2001 Nth. Melbourne 13th 36 pts [West Coast 14th 20 pts]

2008 Geelong 1st 84pts [Hawthorn 2nd 68 pts]

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Essendon have not won a round 7 clash with Hawthorn since 1938.
2. Collingwood have played Brisbane, Fremantle and West Coast only once in round 7 and Hawthorn only twice. They have lost all 5 matches.
3. Melbourne have played Adelaide and Port Adelaide only once in round 7 and Brisbane and St Kilda only twice. They have won all 6 matches.
4. Melbourne and Richmond have met 7 times in round 7. Richmond has won 7 times.
5. Richmond and Geelong have met 11 times in round 7. The only match Geelong has won was round 7, 1931 the year Geelong also defeated Richmond in the Grand Final.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Buddy's last 8 games vs Geelong

Round 22, 2006 - Buddy kicks 2.1 in a Hawthorn win
Round 4, 2007 - Buddy kicks 1.3 in a Hawthorn win
Round 17, 2008 - Buddy kicks 4.5 in a Hawthorn loss
Grand Final, 2008 - Buddy kicks 2.1 in a Hawthorn win
Round 1, 2009 - Buddy kicks 5.2 in a Hawthorn loss
Round 17, 2009 - Buddy kicks 5.2 in a Hawthorn loss
Round 2, 2010 - Buddy kicks 2.3 in a Hawthorn loss
Round 15, 2010 - Buddy kicks 3.3 in a Hawthorn loss

In other words, whenever Buddy has had 4 or less scoring shots against Geelong in his last 8 outings, Hawthorn have claimed a win. When he has had 5 or more scoring shots, Hawthorn have lost.

In Hawthorn's 3 wins in those 8 games, Buddy has kicked 5.5. In the 5 losses, he's kicked 19.15.

You would've thought it would be the other way around.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That is a remarkable stat. Although perhaps it's because Geelong nowadays can handle the output of a 'real' or focal target whereas when you get a plethora of smalls like say in the 2008 GF with Williams, Dew, Rioli, Osborne, Ladson etc that scored the goals, it's less predictable for us to contend against. Key is obviously to watch out for the lesser targets!

Paradoxically in times gone by it would be the likes of Dunstall, Carey, and the like that would routinely kill Geelong's backline post Malarkey as we really struggled for a good quality full back with sufficient size. Rogers, Schultze, Darcy and co were just not quite big enough to handle the great forwards of that era.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just looked at your website, great insight. You must be an expert tipper working with those stats every week!

Not at all, unfortunately. Such stats are of course of amusement value only.

Hawthorn have only won 2 round 17 matches since 1994 but their and St Kilda's current form plus Franklin's rolled ankle and how glued to the bone Riewoldt's ham is are certainly more important considerations in tipping a result than Hawthorn's round 17 past.

However if enough punters were aware of Hawthorn's recent historic lack of success in round 17 and thought it significant, it could serve to shorten the betting odds on St Kilda.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  1. Round 16 is the only round where more than one team has lost with one of the ten highest scores of a season, viz:
    • Collingwood in 1937 v Melbourne
    • Fitzroy in 1962 v South Melbourne
    • North Melbourne in 2001 v Essendon
  2. Since 1908, more scores of 0 or 1 goal have occurred in Round 16 than any other round, viz:
  3. Round 16 of 1993 stands as the last round with three double figure goalkickers - Tony Modra, Saverio Rocca and Stephen Silvagni. Modra’s 13 goals is a Round 16 record.
  4. Round 16 of 1939 saw Melbourne kick 2.5 to Geelong’s 2.6 in the first quarter, 6.2 to 8.2 in the thrid and 3.3 to 3.6 in the last. However, in the second quarter the Demons kicked 11.6 to Geelong’s three behinds to win by 53 points. This 53-point margin is the largest victory by a team winning only one quarter.
  5. Round 16 of 1919 was the first round in which there were three century scores
