At 162 cm, former St Kilda and Brisbane Bears player Danny Craven is the shortest AFL player on record. However, he also holds another record. When Craven made his debut for St Kilda in Round 1 1989 against future team Brisbane at Moorabbin he became the 10,000th footballer to play in this league.

With Melbourne ending their long premiership drought in 2021, three of the holders of the current longest active premiership droughts in the four biggest competitions wear red, black and white jumpers.

St Kilda now hold the longest AFL drought since their only premiership in 1966, and obviously wear red, black and white jumpers. By coincidence the Frankston Dolphins which wear red, black and white were admitted to the VFA in 1966, and have not won a First Division VFA/Senior VFL Premiership to date. The Dolphins only flag triumph was in 1978 VFA Second Division, and even if Division 2 flags are taken into account it still puts Frankston last by a long way. In the WAFL the Perth Demons (red, black and white numbers) have been down a long time, no premiership since 1977 and no GF since 1978. The only exception is in the SANFL where South Adelaide haven't won a premiership since 1964 or been in a Grand Final since 1979, and the Panthers wear navy blue and white.

In the NRL the longest flag drought is by the Parramatta Eels (royal blue and gold) which haven't won a first grade premiership since 1986, but if the North Sydney Bears - which wear red, black and white - were still in the NRL and hadn't broken their GF hoodoo they would be going into the 100th year of their premiership drought in 2022 and 79 years since their 1943 runner up appearance to Newtown.

While many people (myself included) are thrilled for Melbourne breaking their long premiership drought tonight, there is one party that might not be too pleased, and this party is the St Kilda football club, who have been given back an unwanted record they had for a long time but not since 1966.

This record is the longest premiership drought. In the early years of the competition 6 of the 8 foundation clubs won premierships in the first 10 years except Geelong and St Kilda. The Cats and Saints held the longest premiership drought until 1925 when the Geelong won the GF, and from there it was the Saints record alone for 41 long seasons until St Kilda finally won their first flag in 1966.

The record then went to North Melbourne which the Kangaroos held until breaking through for their first flag in 1975, and was in turn passed on to South Melbourne which hadn't won a premiership since 1933. The Swans held the longest premiership drought until 2005 when they defeated West Coast, and with no premiership since 1954 the longest drought was then held by the Bulldogs for 11 seasons until they defeated Sydney Swans in 2016.

Melbourne, its last flag in 1964 therefore inherited the longest premiership drought after the Bulldogs win, but now the Demons have won the 2021 premiership the unwanted record goes back to St Kilda
. And knowing St Kilda, I get the feeling it will stay there for a long time.

Using an odd bit of logic - the drought went: Swans > Bulldogs > Melbourne and the side that the last two clubs beat to end the drought went Swans > Bulldogs > ????

It might suggest the Saints beat Melbourne to break their drought ??

St. Kilda winning a grand final would be great for football, but looking at the AFL team you support, I'm sure you'd agree the Saints can defeat Melbourne in a few years from now, and not while the Bulldogs are "in the window".

They don't need to rush it, no....

Completely fine if it happens in another 20 - 30 years or so.... :p

In the same vein as Scorigami, introducing Quartergami.
There have been 1944 different Quartergamis, or the results scored by both teams in a quarter.

The first Quartergami obviously came in Round 1, 1897. All sixteen quarters were their own Quartergami.
The first repeated quarter scores came in Round 2, 1897. After Essendon outscored Geelong 20-0 in the first quarter of the first round, Melbourne did the exact same to Geelong in the first quarter of the second round. At the same time, Fitzroy outscored St. Kilda 18-7 in the first quarter of their Round 2 game, which Essendon also did to Geelong in the third quarter in Round 1.

Every possible quarter score where a team won or drew the quarter by kicking 43 points or less has happened. There has not been a 44-43 score in a quarter yet.

The last Quartergami where both teams had single digit scores happened in Round 10, 1905. Carlton and South Melbourne both kicked five behinds apiece in the last quarter.

The most recent shutout Quartergami happened in Round 9, 1966. Geelong kicked 71 points to nil in the final quarter against Fitzroy. The lowest shutout that hasn't happened yet is 59-0.

The last time a game had multiple Quartergamis was in Round 22, 1995. North Melbourne outscored Fitzroy 53-37 in the first quarter and 62-28 in the third quarter. The last time a game had three Quartergamis was in Round 6, 1993, with North Melbourne outscoring Sydney 71-9, 63-27, and 69-25 in the first, third and fourth quarters. And the last time all four quarters in a game were Quartergamis was in Round 16, 1926, between Carlton and Fitzroy.

The first round to have no Quartergamis was Round 8, 1898. The first season to have no Quartergamis was 2017, followed by 2019 and 2020.

The most recent Quartergami happened in the second quarter of Geelong's game against West Coast in Round 6, 2021. They kicked 61 points to 1 behind.

Grand Finals with a Quartergami:
1898 - 1st - Fitzroy 17-6 Essendon
1900 - 1st - Melbourne 15-10 Fitzroy
1904 - 4th - Fitzroy 29-12 Carlton
1942 - 2nd - Essendon 44-12 Richmond

Sorry, but I don't get it. Please explain more.

Connor7395.

Let me introduce you to a concept I've thought of.

Roundigami.

Roundigami is when a match-up has happened in a round only once.

For instance, Richmond vs Fremantle in R1 is considered a roundigami because, in R1 1995, that's the only round 1 fixture which has had a Freo vs Richmond game.

Sorry, but I don't get it. Please explain more.
Imagine Melbourne kicks 100 to 0 in the first quarter against the Dogs in a few days.
There hasn't been a VFL/AFL game where a team outscored another team 100 to 0 in a quarter. That would be Quartergami.
Now imagine if instead of 100 to 0, Melbourne kicked another goal and made it 106 to 0 in the first quarter.
That won't be Quartergami because it already happened when South Melbourne kicked 106 points to St. Kilda's 0 in the last quarter of their game in Round 12, 1919.

Kind of off.
Richmond vs Fremantle in a round one fixture has happened once, so it would be Roundigami when it happened in Round 1, 1995.
The point is that such an event happens but has never happened previously. Hence, every game Fremantle played in 1995 would be a Roundigami since it was their inaugural season. I suppose I can make a list of what's missing now though I suspect it will be mostly involving GWS, Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Brisbane Lions.

Bolded numbers are set to be a Roundigami this season.

Of the 10 current SANFL teams, only 2 have never played in a Grand Final at the Adelaide Oval. One is the Adelaide Crows Reserves, which has never played in a Grand Final since commencing in 2013, and the other is remarkably the Central Districts Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had a golden era playing in 12 straight Grand Finals from 2000-2011 inclusive, winning 9 premierships, but all of these matches were played at the now demolished Football Park in West Lakes. Likewise, Centrals two losing GF appearances against Port Adelaide in 1995 and 1996 also took place at Football Park. The Bulldogs have never made a Grand Final when Adelaide Oval was used for SANFL Grand Finals prior to Football Park opening in 1974, nor from 2014 onwards when the SANFL GF returned to Adelaide Oval.

The Bulldogs have lost their last 13 H&A matches against that season's reigning premier. They last defeated a reigning premier in 2009 (88 points against the Hawks).

That's quite remarkable for a team that has won a premiership and been a runner up during that time, as well as a losing Preliminary Finalist and losing Elimination Finalists on three occasions.

IIRC, they lost to Sydney in about R2 2017, a reverse of the previous year's GF result.

Pick a team that got eliminated in each week of the finals last year.
1. Essendon
2. GWS
3. Port
4. Bulldogs

Now consider those four teams have a 4-16 combined record this year. I'd be amazed if that has ever happened before.

AFL games that produce symmetrical scores for both teams - such as 12.12-84 to 9.9-63 are rarely seen. The lowest scoring of these games was in 1900, when Carlton defeated St Kilda 7.7-49 to 4.4.28 an aggregate of 77 points. Remarkably there have been four draws at 35 each, but in each case the scores were 4.11-35 to 5.5-35, so no symmetry.

The highest scoring symmetrical game ever seen was a memorable encounter between Geelong and Fitzroy at Kardinia Park in Round 6 1992, where the Cats kicked an astonishing 25.25-175 to beat the Lions 11.11-77 by 98-points. Geelong and Fitzroy kicked a combined aggregate score of 36.36-252 for the day and interestingly the Cats were very inaccurate early on but found their target later in the match, while the Lions were highly accurate as they stayed in touch with their opponents in the first half but fell away after the long break.

In Round 1 of the 1981 WAFL season there was a symmetrical match even higher scoring than the Cats and Lions game 11 years later. It would be something of a preview of the Grand Final result for that year, with the Claremont Tigers kicking 22.22-154 to be 28-points too good for the South Fremantle Bulldogs, which scored 18.18-126, the teams producing a remarkable aggregate score of 40.40-280 between them.

I'm not sure if there are any other symmetrical WAFL, SANFL or VFL/VFA games that could beat this; if you know of any please post them.

I've found a bigger one, and it's halfsies for the losers too.

Port Melbourne 28.28.196 def Brunswick 14.14.98, VFA Division 1, 1986
42.42.294 on aggregate

That's an amazing scoreline. Accountants and auditors love these scores, like perfectly matched debits and credits in the general ledger.
