Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just noticed on another stats thread, but for the period 1979 until now, Geelong in 1989 with 21.12.138 is the only losing Grand Finallist to score over 100 points.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Number of times Hawthorn has kicked more than 100 points to win a Grand Final: 8

2. Number of times Collingwood has kicked more than 100 points to win a Grand Final: 0

3. Number of times Collingwood has kicked more than 100 points to lose a Grand Final: 2

4. Footscray won their only premiership in 1954, winning by 51 points and restricting Melbourne to 51 points.

And one I heard on the radio:

5. Ben Cousins, is 32 years old, wears the #32 and will finish his career with 32 games for Richmond.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Maurice Rioli played in four successive Grand Finals across two states from 1979-1981.

In 1980 and 1981 he won the Simpson Medal for Best on Ground in the WAFL Grand Final for South Fremantle (1981's effort was in a losing side).

In 1982, he repeated the dose, winning the Norm Smith Medal as Best on Ground in the VFL Grand Final for Richmond. Oddly enough, his Norm Smith Medal win echoed his efforts the previous year, as Richmond were on the losing end.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Freaky stats.

In Round 6, 1989, Geelong played and lost a game that saw 51 goals kicked. In Round 7, 1989, Geelong played and won a game that saw 51 goals kicked.

In Round 5, 1985, Hawthorn played and lost a game that saw 50 goals kicked. In Round 5, 1988, Hawthorn played and won a game that saw 50 goals kicked.

In Round 9, 1982, Carlton lead Sydney by 64 at quarter time. In Round 18, 1982, Carlton lead Footscray by 63 at quarter time.

In Round 1, 1950, Geelong and Hawthorn played. In Round 1, 1960, Geelong and Hawthorn played in seperate games and both teams scored 66 points (and lost)

Collingwood possibly first premiers with a score of 4 or fewer goals since 1995

I have noted earlier that Collingwood, if they win the flag this year, become the first eventual premiers to score four or fewer goals in a match since Carlton in 1995.

It is ironic that both performances were against St. Kilda.

What I wanted to say then but have not is how interesting a list of all Collingwood’s scores of zero to four goals since the VFL began in 1897 is.

Of 2341 games Collingwood have played since 1897, they have scored zero to four goals in ninety-seven of them, or 4.1 percent. The breakdown is fascinating:

  • 0 goals:
    • 2 scores
      • last: Round 6, 1900 v Carlton
  • 1 goal:
    • 3 scores
      • last: Round 6, 1899 v Fitzroy
  • 2 goals:
    • 22 scores
      • last: Round 13, 1987 v North Melbourne (have this game on DVD)
  • 3 goals:
    • 24 scores
      • last: Round 2, 1961 v Richmond
  • 4 goals:
    • 51 scores
      • last: Round 3, 2010 v St. Kilda
      • previous: Round 5, 1995 v Hawthorn
What is remarkable is that

  1. Collingwood have scored exactly three goals on precisely the same number of occasions all teams have failed to goal
  2. Richmond in 1961 were the last team to fail to goal in a match (against St. Kilda in Round 16)
  3. the last score of exactly three goals by a Collingwood team was against Richmond in 1961!
  4. Collingwood’s previous-to-2010 score of four goals was in the same year as the last score of four or fewer goals by an eventual premier. They were even both at Waverley Park!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

The record here is 31 games, by a chap called Con McCormack, who only lost v Fitz.

Jarryd Blair hasn't played in a losing side yet. Just so we can keep track of him ;) lol

Over at the other end of the table, Ted Hall played his unlucky times with the Saints. He played 73 games with the Saints, and was quite a good player. The only probably was that he only played in ONE WINNING SIDE! And that was against Carlton, in 1901. The first REAL win for the Saints, their first in the opening round of 1900, where it was a draw, and the Saints successfully protested that a behind to the Saints hadn't been counted (Or was it that Melbourne kicked a point after the three-quarter time siren?)

With coaches, however, Kevin Murray is the boob of all coaches. In his coaching career with the Lions/Gorillas, he coached 36 games, 36 losses. It would have been 37 games, but one match in 1963 he was representing Victoria. And what happened to Fitzroy that day? They downed 3rd place Geelong by SIX GOALS!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Tribunal facts:

1. The first player to ever be reported was Bill Matthews from St.Kilda. He was reported for abusive language in Round 7, 1898. He was found guilty, but there was no penalty

2. The first player found not guilty was Geelong's Jack Conway. He was found not guilty on a Rough Conduct charge in Round 6, 1899.

3. The first suspension was to Geelong's Joe McShane. He was suspended 7 weeks for striking in Round 16, 1899.

4. The first suspension involving an umpire goes to Collingwood's Dick Condon. He copped a 20 week suspension for abusing an umpire in Round 2, 1900.

5. The first finals report goes to South Melbourne's Jim Caldwell. He was reported for striking and banned for 9 weeks during the 1909 Grand Final

6. The most weeks suspended in total for a single finals series was in 1910. A total of 294 weeks were handed out for bribery during a Carlton final and a melee in the Grand Final. Just 9 players were reported and suspended for 99, 99, 28, 28, 21, 10, and 9 weeks respectively. Two other's caught for bribery were not suspended.

7. The season with the least reports was 1916. Because there were just 4 teams, only two players, Charlie Norris (Fitzroy, in Round 4 for striking) and Steve Leehane (Carlton, in Round 12 for downing). Only Charlie Norris got suspended, and for 8 weeks.

8. The first player reported for shaking a post was Arthur Hando of South Melbourne, in Round 9, 1924. He was found guilty, but there was no charge.

9. The first player to be suspended for playing while having been suspended was Fred Fitzgibbon of Carlton. During the last quarter of the 1945 Grand Final, Fitzgibbon, sitting in the crowd serving four weeks for striking a week before, ran onto the ground and jumped into the brawl. He was suspended for another four weeks.

10. The first player to be fined by the tribunal was Ron D. Barassi, coach of North Melbourne at the time. He was reported for abusive language in Round 9, 1975. He was fined $100.

Ha! Somebody asked me that question last night and gave the answer as Wayne Johnston, 1987 GF and the "Battle of Britain" exhibition match v North.

Percentage of kicks that resulted in goals

This is meant to be a variant on the goalkicking accuracy stat wherein the goals kicked by a player are measured in percentage terms in relation to the behinds he has also kicked in a game, season, career. I am looking at how many kicks were had and how many of them resulted in goals.
I'll begin by looking at some of the league's leading goalkickers in years gone by.

Plugger doesn't seem to have done a lot of "other" kicking. He saved most of it for shooting at goal, not that this makes him a selfish player.
Only Fraser Gehrig makes this list from this century.

Not at all...he does the team thing and kicks goals :D

In 1991, only 12 of his 190 kicks did not score

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Melbourne's 7th goal in this match was their 2,000th against Nth. Melbourne.

Found this, Roger. Turns out that that goal was Lynden Dunn's miracle off ground goal from 45m, out of mid air! Look on the Game Analyser on the AFL site and find Melbourne's 7th goal.
